Scrappy is what I do - REAL scrappy. I've also done controlled scrappy and love it but the REAL scrappy takes me back to the pioneer days when the women were forced to use any and all types/sizes of fabrics for their quilts. Crazy quilting is a prime example of scrappy (IMHO) with the added bonus of gorgeous embroidery stitches. I'm so happy that this wonderful hobby has so many different ways of doing it and everyone seems to totally enjoy all those different ways. LOVE IT - LOVE IT - LOVE IT

I make scrappy but I still try not to put the same colors beside each other. and when the blocks were finished, I tried to arrange then in a pleasing pattern. Some of the blocks I even used like all holiday prints or all childrens prints. Scrappy and random are two different things. Scraps are just that ~ scraps. I'm signed up for a class now that I was going to use my scraps in but realized I didn't have enough black and bought that, then realized I wanted brighter colors with the black and only had so many scraps, so I started looking in my stash for brights. I figured at least I'm using out of my stash and the only thing I bought was the black.

just what the words suggests.. according to the dictionary....

my scrappy pile is a large plastic container filled with all the left overs from previous projects......

and you are so right, something beautiful can be produced form all these "ugly ducklings"

I'm with you and I would take it further sometimes if you have bits from left over dressmaking projects as well (or old shirts). It is not specially purchased material for the project.

My mother gave me all of her "scraps" and I plan to make a crazy quilt out of it. Her leftovers will be my treasure.

I love scrappy quilts. Some that I make are "controlled"
using only specific colors, some I call "true" scrappy using only fabrics from my scrap bags (and boxes and sacks). I do try not to put two of the same fabric together and work with darks and lights. I love all the scrappy avatars I am seeing.

If your fabric is ugly, you just haven't cut it into small enough pieces.

One of the big name quilters - I think it might have been Marti Michell - said (and I'm paraphrasing) that a scrap is any piece of fabric she hasn't used in a quilt yet, even if that piece is 7 yards long.
