I have gone totally blank. I took my hand quilting class long before I ever had a quilt top made. Now I have a gazillion tops and can't remember what we basted with.

Thanks!
Suzanne

I use Sulky KK2000. There are others on the market. Personally I prefer safety pins to the overspray.

littlehud 07-12-2010 01:53 PM

I use basting spray.

DebraK 07-12-2010 01:59 PM

I have a big cone of some anonymous thread that my husband found at the flea market for $3. It is very strong and has a slippery feel to it. Works great. No snagging or knotting. I've basted at least 10 quilts with it, and it is no where near empty. I'll be sad when it finally runs out.

sidmona 07-12-2010 02:01 PM

I use safety pins.

Jim's Gem 07-12-2010 02:25 PM

505 Basting spray!!!

np3 07-12-2010 02:27 PM

I use safety pins. I'm afraid to try the spray.

Why are you afraid to try the spray? You may be pleasantly surprised at the results. :)

np3 07-12-2010 02:47 PM

I know I can repin if I don't have it sandwiched correctly. But if I spray it, I understand that it is hard to make adjustments.

I don't have any problem making adjustments. I just lift and spread it back out, smoothing from the center out. Maybe it depends on how much you spray. I don't cover the entire batting, I spray in a grid - probably about 6" apart and all the way around the edge.

Just be sure you are using "basting" spray, not other adhesives.

craftybear 07-12-2010 03:09 PM

what kind of basting spray do you use?

Most of the time I use the June Tailor brand. I like it better than Dritz. Haven't tried the 505...I'd rather spend the extra money on fabric since I don't mind the June Tailor brand. :)

GrammaNan 07-12-2010 04:18 PM

All right, you all have talked me in to trying basting spray. I have used hand basting and safety pins and was getting ready to try water soluble thread, but I think I will try the spray now.

shaverg 07-12-2010 04:35 PM

If for hand quilting, I thread baste.

np3 07-12-2010 04:44 PM

I'm going to try basting spray now. You all make it sound like it will work just fine. Here's hoping!

I also us the water soluable thread when I'm doing a large quilt, especially if there's a lot of bias - like the French Braid in my avatar - it came out great! I use this along with the basting spray.

janceejan 07-13-2010 03:51 AM

Just remember to cover anything you do not want sprayed. I learned the hard way...lol.

sewitseams 07-13-2010 04:18 AM

i use basting spray and safety pins. works great for me.

amtnquilter 07-13-2010 10:10 AM

I use "gasp" I know, Aqua Net hairspray. Works very well for me has the same ingredients in it as the basting sprays and,is cheaper and the fact that I live in a very tiny mtn town I cannot get basting spray but can get the hairspray, Aqua Net.yes I made a sample, held well, sewed well and did not affect the fabric.

mayday 07-13-2010 10:18 AM

use sharonschamber to sandwich, then safety pin and baste with any cheap cotton .

Oh my. I might have to try this on a small quilt. At 13.00 a can for the basting spray, I would love to find an alternative!

GrammaNan 07-13-2010 10:59 AM

Really? That stuff is cheap. If this works for me, I am going to send you a FQ for giving me the idea.

I hope that it works for you, please let us know.
Scary thought tho that we use this on our heads!
O well I still use it for both jobs!
Kathy

It washes right out of our hair, so I'm sure it will wash right out of a quilt. What a clever idea. :)

I use spray baste vs. pins or basting stitches.

amtnquilter 07-13-2010 11:10 AM

Makes sense to me. Is sure affordable, I can afford to baste the charity q, crib, lap sizes that I do for old soldiers and kids in need.
Kathy

OkieTwister54 07-13-2010 07:34 PM

I use pins only. :-D

gmcsewer 07-14-2010 06:26 AM

My next quilt will be basted by a machine quilter for $10 to $15. She quilts in a grid of 4 inches. Hope it will work as I hate to put the thing together.

mswordwiz 07-14-2010 06:29 AM

I swear by the 505 spray, and I trained hubby to do my spraying. Aqua-net?? Seriously??? Hrmm I need to add that to my grocery list!

OmaForFour 07-14-2010 07:35 AM

I use 505 basting spray and quilter's safety pins which have a slight bend in them and are easy on the hands. Also they don't rust if you live in humid climate like I do.

catrancher 07-14-2010 09:59 AM

I like large safety pins and I have Kwik Clip to help me. It took me a bit to figure out how to use it, but now I can't live without it.

twistedstitcher 07-14-2010 10:06 AM

Nothing but basting spray for me! I use Sullivan's.

cheryl joy 07-14-2010 11:16 AM

Pins, have had bad luck with sprays

gale 07-14-2010 11:21 AM

I use pins-the curved kind. I can't handle the smell of most sprays and my dd has asthma so I won't spray something like that inside. We don't even use hairspray here except for other dd's dance recital and then we spray in one room where no one will be going for a few hours.

I've read about the aqua net but then some said their bigger quilts didn't stay together while machine quilting them so I chickened out. I wish I had a big surface to do any kind of basting-I have to do it in portions. I did see a video about how to sandwich with two long wooden boards so I got the boards and will be trying that sometime.

tryitall 07-14-2010 11:45 AM

I use saftey pins. The spray goes everywhere!

cimarron 07-14-2010 04:05 PM

There is actual BASTING thread out there...cannot find mine this second, and name eludes me at the moment. Physical description: large spool, with a white label fully encircling the spool (except ends) printed with beige or taupe colored ink. The reason I do use this is...I hand baste (and baste and baste and baste). If you have ever machine quilted, and caught regular thread used for basting, it can pull those basting stitches and mess things up... Well, this basting thread is made to break if that sort of pressure is applied. The big spool goes a long, long way. It was recommended in a class, and I really do like it. I did try to find it...but simply is not where it is SUPPOSED to be. I used stuff for a class recently, then pulled all out of the rolling carrier, replacing those items with items for a watercolor class instead...and -nothing- has been the same ever since! ; - D

quilt3311 07-14-2010 04:50 PM

I baste with cheap white thread from the discount store. If I machine quilt I either spray or use the 1" bent pins.

I am about to try out Aqua Net...THANKS for the suggestion. I'm another one scared to try any kind of spray. Just for fun we'll do this with the grand-daughters next week...on their mini-quilt-projects. WHY NOT?!

I have use the Elmers Spray glue. Works great and washed out beautifully. Learned this from the lady that I took my first quilting class from to see if I really wanted to quilt. She is a hand quilter and uses it all the time.

galvestonangel 07-14-2010 06:03 PM

I have sprayed and used pins. But I watched a you tube video by Sharon Schamber on basting your quilt and how she makes her quilt sandwich, I am converted. I don't no how to put the web site on but go to you tube and put in her name. It makes putting the sandwich together so much easier. I thought that was the worst part, it seemed I always had wrinkles to contend with. Check it out.

betlinsmom 07-14-2010 06:31 PM

my hubby bastes my quilts with June tailor basting spray and then puts in quilters safety pins for me. Works great!!
