What do your quilt scraps say about you?
When going through my scraps to make a scrap quilt I realized my scraps say a lot about me. What I found out first was I'm on my way to being a hoarder. Second I tend to use more red in my quilts than other colors. Third I steer away from large prints. Fourth my fabric types are more traditional. All being said I think I'm a conservative traditional quilter who likes a little spice (red) in her life. What do your scraps say about you?
My say my favorite colors are green, blue and purple. I tend to hoard them, too. I am trying to make better use of my scraps this year. I am on my second scrappy quilt and still can't get the lid on the tubbie. Please don't tell me to buy a bigger tubbie.....I already did and it's too full.

Hello maryb119............could you please tell me the name of the pretty pink quilt....I would like to make this for a 'childrens" charity
Looking at my scrappy stash ....tells me ,never have enough.
I think my stash says that I am a cheerful person and apparently I don't like flowers (which is true).
My scraps aren't plentiful so that says that I need to sew more to make more.
My scraps tell me I rarely encounter a fabric I don't like or find a use.
My scraps told me to stop saving them and not do anything with them. So they all got bagged up for the guilds use. I already used the fabric once, or twice...no need to use it again. And it felt absolutely wonderful to get them all out of there!

Your description of you could be about me, too, exactly. A conservative traditionalist who likes a bit of spice...for me, red and yellow. :) Jan in VA |
Mine says I'm a Magpie that loves loud colors and big prints. I'm in the process of making my scraps into hst or flying geese blocks of a similar size so I'll have working units with which to play. Which of course creates more scraps. I'm sensing a problem here. : )
also it says I hate the color orange and am not too fond of yellow. Im a earth tone, blues, purple n green kinda gal.
It says I like bright and geometric fabrics, the brighter and bolder the better.
Bright color girl who likes to use them in a traditional setting. I thought I had all colors but when I went to pull fabric for my last quilt I realized I only had THREE pinks in my stash. I love pink so either I don't buy it too often or I use it quite a bit - I am going for the later. I have more blues in my stash than any other fabric which surprises me since I don't buy it too often. I am not an earth tone quilter, I really struggle to finish a quilt if I use those colors. And shock and horror I am not a batik fan - there I have said it.

modern girl here who loves yellows, teals, and blues. my scrap quilts are very controlled. tried pulling random scraps from a bag and sewing them together. HATED the quilt! gave it to my sister's pit bull Princess who loved it.
My scrapes say I'm a hoarder. All kinds of colors and types of fabric. I'm getting rid of a bunch of them though in a scrap log cabin. Even pieced the back with 1/2 sq. triangles .
Mine says I don't use much yellow or brown and that I use an awful lot more plain fabrics than prints. They also tell me they are fed up being crammed in bags and need using up!

Definite hoarder here! Low on reds, neutrals which says I've used them up ( a good thing!) High on everything else which says I need to get off the computer and on the sewing machine. Good sewing weather today and have a great day!
My scraps tell me I'm a brights gal. Definitely alot of aquas, greens and blues.
Mine say "can't figure her out. Guess she's eclectic. Scraps from some very fine silks to burlap and every color on earth". Just can't figure her out. ANd that is fine by me. Others often say that about me. I will tell you if you are right or wrong in the same breath and those around us. That may be why I get a little ADD about what to use. So many choices.
Mine are saying get yourself off that computer and get in here and sew!!!!

That my fabric tastes regarding prints and colors has changed a great deal over my 20+ year quilting journey. Also that my taste in fabric quality has improved dramatically.
Mine say I do a lot of children's quilts! Those scraps don't always play well with others, so they are only fit for a children's scrappy.
This is a fun thread... thanks for starting it! |

I can do 3.5" crumb blocks for quilts for others-not me. I like controlled scrappy. I love pink, yet need more in stash. Also says I need to do a few quilts using batiks. |
My scraps basically tell me I need more sleep to make less scraps, (if only) I love color, reds & blues are my favorites with lots of other vibrant scraps in there too! They also say I need a much bigger container!! I don't work with a lot of flowery prints, I'm a traditional quilter who loves nature, but use bright colors in childrens quilts and ones with darker backgrounds. I don't like black & switch calls for black with navy blue. I love going through them to add a bit more color to a quilt I'm working on. They've even saved my backside a few times when I needed another little piece to finish a quilt!

"Mad as a box of frogs" bits of everything.....including clothing.....all kinds of "stuff" all colours, and though not a particular lover of floral prints....a lot of those follow me home.
Mine tell a lot of lies about me because most of my quilts were made for other people, in colors and styles that don't really appeal to me personally!
There is a LOT of pink in my scrap bin, and that's my LEAST favorite color. But somehow I keep ending up making pink quilts. The pink also tends to accumulate in there because that's the last fabric I'm going to be tempted to grab for a current project. I need to do some pinky-scrappy baby quilts for charity, that's the solution to THAT issue! |
They would say I'm a person who needs to create a little order in the world by cutting and compartmentalizing them into certain size brackets as I work.
Yes sewbiz this is a fun thread:)
My friends give me their small scraps because they like to see what I can make with their unusable pieces:shock:. This gives me an eclectic, diverse supply which helps take me out of my traditional mindset colored with every shade of blue with samples of all colors but Orange. |
:) Members of my quilting bee exchange scrap buckets each Christmas -- it is interesting how different each collection of scraps is and how colors/fabric reflected the member-- I have collected my bee scraps for a couple of years now and plan to make a postage stamp like quilt and have started cutting my 2 1/2 inch squares and sorting them into light/dark

My what an interesting thread. My scraps say that I like a LOT of color. There is a bit of everything in there, every color there is, although not much red. I tend toward Earth tones. All small prints and no solids. I love batiks, love buying them, but then have to force myself to cut. I like to just pet them for a while.
So I guess I am scrappy, quiet (the Earth tones) and not too boring. |
Mine says I don't sew enough and I need to make about 2 dozen quilts to whittle them down a bit. It also says I love Moda florals.
It has been so entertaining reading this thread. Thanks so much for starting it!

As most of my quilts are gifts for others, my scraps just say I'm versatile and colorful. Of course with the colors in my home being in the blues and reds, I tend to gravitate towards them more but will be working on a quilt for my bed finally in the colors of lime green and rust colors. Another bedroom in purples and yellow so that should add some interest in my scrap stash. Have a friend that dove thru my scraps for yellows and pinks for a scrappy square quilt. I'm loving her combo as this is her 1st real quilt. Can't wait to quilt it for her. Think she's hooked too.
My scraps say that I love bright colors and modern fabrics. They also say that I've used a lot of blues and greens in my quilts, and that I have a surprisingly small amount of purple. Also that I have a love for orange that I never knew until I started quilting. The thing that's not surprising is that I have absolutely no brown fabric. All of my neutrals are black, white, and gray based.
Mine says that I have far too many. There are years of styles of prints and colors. Some that were mine, some that were gifted to me by my late friend, mrs matlock, my late friend Kitty and my friends mother (who is also gone now.)
I am gifting it all to her this week and a bin of denim scraps. Funny you brought this up, I sorted out three bins and two garbage bags out for her yesterday. |
I am letting go of more of my scraps to stuff pet bedding for the local rescue center.
Mine say I'm obsessively organized.
All scraps too small to be cut into logs (1.5 x 1.5 ~ 1.5 x 2.5 ~ upwards to 1.5 x 9.5) become leaders/enders. Large pieces go back into their colour container. The logs are organized by size and light/dark = 18 reasonable size containers (they all fit into a giant container). All my fabrics (except batiks) are folded into neat squares and in containers (approximately 12 x 24 x 8 deep) by colour with the wide fold on top. Makes shopping my stash easy. Batiks are in three large containers. Mostly by when they were bought on sale at Kapaia Stitchery's sales. As I prewash, I pull more like colours out to wash together. Yes, I wash by colour, too. So my scraps also say She loves batiks and bright colours!!!!! :D |
My stash shows I like a variety of colors but tend to be drawn to blues and greens, I also see a void of large prints. More importantly it is indicating I need to get some scrappy projects underway.
Our scraps really tell our stories. I enjoyed the one who said few reflexes her choice but others she has made quilts for. Wow what a great legacy. Like many of you mine calls me to use them and even after using there is always plenty to share. Thanks for all the wonderful responses.
