darlin121 03-24-2011 10:35 AM

Never thought of using those old coffee filters for anything but coffee, thanks for the tip.

babyboomerquilter 03-24-2011 10:37 AM

That is really clever!

reeskylr 03-24-2011 10:39 AM

grammysews4u 03-24-2011 10:45 AM

love this idea! just finished a crazy quilt but have sew many more scrapes!

San Diego Quilter 03-24-2011 10:53 AM

Wow - perfect for little round coffee mug rugs! What a great idea! I have some old industrial sized filters that have been sitting in my cupboard for years (pack rat that I am).....see, if I keep things long enough, I WILL use them (fact or fantasy depends on the day :) )

Linda

NannySandy 03-24-2011 10:55 AM

Coffee filters are also good to cover small bowls in the microwave, to prevent splatters.

CarrieAnne 03-24-2011 10:56 AM

Great idea!

Annaquilts 03-24-2011 10:58 AM

Would you leave the paper in? How would you sew it down?

dixiebelle162002 03-24-2011 11:03 AM

Very neat! I may have to buy some coffee filters and I don't even drink coffee!

suebee 03-24-2011 11:06 AM

This is the coolest thing ever!! Thank you

MDMPanther 03-24-2011 11:11 AM

Household (and sewing) tips are great! All in a woman's day!

belmer 03-24-2011 11:58 AM

Wow... Great Idea, Thankyou so much for sharing with us. I must have missed this one back in July of last year, I just recently added her blog spot to my E-mail. She hasGreat ideas on tooltime tuesdays.

LivelyLady 03-24-2011 11:58 AM

I've been using them for over 2 years mainly for a stabilizer when machine applique. They work great and are acid free :-)

sgardner 03-24-2011 12:01 PM

I thought about cutting them into hexagons, and then crazy patching the same way. That way, you could sew them together into a whole quilt of whatever size you needed. Or, hexagon pineapples.

Divokittysmom 03-24-2011 12:04 PM

No this idea is just downright brilliant! Thank you so much for posting this.

pdcakm 03-24-2011 12:14 PM

took a class with applique blocks. the instructor uses coffee filters for tear away stabilizer for machine applique. we also tried paper towels. both worked fine.

oksewglad 03-24-2011 12:30 PM

I can see taking the circle, cutting it into fourths down the center, then using them in a Drunkards path block-Just a crazy drunken idea--LOL Sorry for the pun.

cassiemae 03-24-2011 12:37 PM

Thanks
I just entered that in my favorites, what a neat idea. I think I would like mine square.

texpat45 03-24-2011 12:43 PM

That is so cool! What a great way to make crazy quilt fans...just cut the filter in half (or quarters),sew down your fan fabric strips and trim nice and even. Gotta go buy some coffee filters!!

Are industrial ones bigger? Available at Sam's Club? It seems to me the thinnest ones would be best if they are to be left in a quilt. Anybody with input about where the wimpiest ones are sold and brand names, please let us know. They are very similar to non-woven interfacing, and the circle shape is a big plus for some things.

CoriAmD 03-24-2011 02:23 PM

I have used coffee filters as a base for sewing strips, but I first cut the filter into a square. Worked very well..... DUH! Never thought of leaving it in circle shape...

San Diego Quilter 03-24-2011 04:21 PM

Yes - the industrial filters are about twice the size. Available at restaurant supply outlets (here, Smart & Final) and they are cheap! I can't wait to go home and try them out.

I'll post a pic of a scrappy round mug rug as soon as I get one finished. (This day job certainly gets in the way of my quilting.... :) )

But it helps you pay for the fabric you love

greenini 03-24-2011 05:20 PM

DUH, never thought about ironing the things flat!! Mine are a little lumpy...

scowlkat 03-24-2011 05:51 PM

I have used coffee filters for years when I paint for drybrushing technique. There is no lint when you use a coffee filter! I don't drink coffee but keep filters around all the time. However had never thought of them for foundation piecing! Especially leaving in a circle! How cool!
