lots of little tricks and patience with my mistakes!

lindagor 09-22-2011 03:30 AM

My stressing over FMQ has eased since becoming a member of this board.

SewExtremeSeams 09-22-2011 03:33 AM

All of the above and then so much more. I delved into paper piecing, appliques, and art quilts... all because of this board. :-D

So I told her I was very glad that she knew so much about the pattern and how it should be done , asked to see her verson, (she had never done it) and told her since my quilt is so "dredful" ,her word, she did't have to look at it. Shocked the rest of the group, and the instructer, but she shut up and did't critize anyone elses project. Made some new friends that day. The instructer smiled and said I was doing great,(I think she ment the quilt)LOL

Well, the first thing is my to-do list got much longer!
The term Cozy Quilter-fits so well b/c my quilts aren't perfect and don't have to be.
New friends- some I've met and some I haven't yet.
More info than I could possibly retain-about life, quilting techniques and people in general.
I could show you the ugliest quilt in the world and there would be positive comments on it.
This board rocks and I never want to leave!!!

mhollifiel 09-22-2011 03:59 AM

I am like Yooper32 except I moved from WV to the swamp here in North Carolina! Also I have been recently diagnosed with back problems which keep my exercising to a minimum. That is small potatoes because, thanks to the board, I am learning so much and oh, so many patterns! Who knew about disappearing 9 patches and I sure wasn't able to make just one potato chip quilt! No more looking over my shoulder for the Quilt Police either.
SO, I refuse to get down when I can plug into my support group here on the QB! If the amazing people on this board were in charge of things, one wonders how many of the world's problems could be solved? Food for Thought! Thanks to every one here just for quilting and making the world a better place.

GJoyce 09-22-2011 03:59 AM

OH BOY, Still haven't finished putting my sewing cabinet together so only thing different is MORE time on the computer reading the Quilting Board...LOL

scrappy2 09-22-2011 04:17 AM

The first thing I did when I read this post was get a pencil & paper. I didn't get very far when I realized that I have learned more from all of you then any quilt book, class or head shrink, to keep my sanity. I agree with all the post above. If you only knew how much your words have help support & inspire me. Now that I know there are no Quilting Police I can get my UFO's out of hiding. Thanks everyone on QB.

Debbie B 09-22-2011 04:40 AM

I was new to quilting and so everything that I've have learned here has gone into my quilting. The main thing that has changed for me is that I went from sewing on the kitchen table, to a card table in my son's old room to now a full fledged sewing room. I sold my son's old bed. It's a small room and I thought getting the bed out would give me so much more room. HA...I just bought more stuff to fill it up.

#1piecemaker 09-22-2011 04:43 AM

Where to start?? Golly, my mind is a blank. Before I came, I didn't have a clue about OBW's or kelidescopes. Nor did I know what Dear Jane was. I had never seen a disappearing nine patch. And, the tutorials on all the easy ways to do things are simply amazing. But, the best thing that I've learned is how wonderful it is to have a quilting community in my own home!

LindaDeeter 09-22-2011 04:54 AM

Oh my goodness ... what have a learned here? SO MUCH! The members on this board are like a whole bunch of quilting buddies, some very experienced, some just learning like me! I am finding I absolutely MUST read each and every entry because I don't want to miss one little gem! I believe I am a more confident quilter thanks to this board. I've learned about the incredible process of spray basting that changed my quilting life! I've learned to be patient with myself and not be afraid to try new things like FMQ! I've even learned a lot about my Janome 6600P and the list goes on! Thank you all for being here when I need you!

sguillot 09-22-2011 05:09 AM

I have learned how wonderful and suportive quilters are, they are not selfish and don't mind sharing ideas and tips. We can talk about anything, quilting related or non quilt related and have more support and help than I could ever imigine getting from any other place. No therapist needed anymore. I just come here.

SandraD 09-22-2011 05:11 AM

As a self taught quilter this Board has been a godsend! I have learned tons, tons, tons!! The most helpful to date would be beeswax for my hand quilting thread. Far less tangles!!

Same here!!!

Cagey 09-22-2011 05:33 AM

One of the most important things I've learned is that there is no perfect quilt. I'm enjoying quilting alot more now that I'm not expecting perfection - which is a good thing cuz' I have a looooooooong way to go to even get close to that!

JoanneS 09-22-2011 05:49 AM

Glue and adhesive basting are the biggest timesavers I've learned here. And I had never even heard about using starch before. Now I wouldn't start cutting without it. I bought my Accuquilt Go because members sang its praises - and now I'm shouting its praises! Biggest timesaver of all - and accurate beyond words!

I didn't like the Dear Jane quilt until the DJ Christmas exchange, and I love it now! And I have a DJ Christmas quilt of my very own. I also have enough Black and White blocks from that exchange to make 2 quilts - currently UFOs. I made a OBW - and plan to make more - probably would never have heard of them without the Board.

I usually make quilts to be gifts, so I take a picture for my scrapbook and send the quilt off to the giftee. Before I found this board, I rarely showed the quilts to anyone. Now I post a picture and within minutes I'm getting praise! It's a wonderful feeling! We are all so supportive of each other.

I continue to be amazed and delighted with the talent I see in pictures posted here. People don't seem to realize how talented they are! I love all the pictures - from newbies who are just beginning their journey into the quilt world - to those who are posting a picture of their 100th quilt. All are wonderful.

I love the way we gather to encourage a member who needs help - lots of prayers go out from this board.

mountain deb 09-22-2011 05:50 AM

What I have changed.......I spend more time on this board than anywhere else on my computer.

Becka 09-22-2011 06:04 AM

I couldn't even begin to list the things I've learned and improved upon from being on this board. And it's not all quilt related either :)

loriea 09-22-2011 06:06 AM

First of all I feel better about my quilts not being perfect.

Removing thread and not pulling it backwards through the tension when I rethread my machine.

I tried my first use of basting spray, I love it!!!

Washing, starching, shrinkage, ironing - press and not move the iron around on seams,

On the general chit - chat about authors I found several new authors and currently reading a book that is hard to put down with the exception of this board, meals occasionally and even a shower.

More than I can think of now, thanks for all contributions to the board.

BarbZ 09-22-2011 06:10 AM

I found out from a good friend. Have learned a LOT. But the best hint was about the spray basting. Love all the opinion questions on different topics.

What I have learned from the QB is that quilters all over the world are just as friendly and helpful as they are locally. I cannot imagine not being a part of the QB now.

Caswews 09-22-2011 06:22 AM

some of the amazing tips and one never stops learning every day or they become stagnant.

Mgrubbs 09-22-2011 06:23 AM

Same here!

Baloonatic 09-22-2011 06:27 AM

I used to have a life...

I used to go to work and bring home the groceries. Now I spend all my money on fabric.

I used to have beautiful, well-behaved children. I haven't seen them lately, I think they grew up and moved away but I'm not really sure.

I used to dust and do laundry, and kept a lovely home. Now I only dust where I need to stack more fabric. Saves SO much time!

I used to make great meals for my family. Now Meals-On-Wheels saves me so much time better spent on this Board!

Now, now I sit staring at this screen all day, feeling inspired by all the beautiful projects the Board members are creating. I imagine all the quilts I'm going to make... if I still had a job to earn the money to buy fabric, and if I hadn't sold my sewing studio furniture to pay for my internet service!

LOL!

dphelps 09-22-2011 06:34 AM

I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful my experience on the QB has been. Not only have I met new friends but I, like everyone else have learned so much. I have been sewing since the age of 12 and have stabbed at quilting for a long time. Not until I joined have I been a serious quilter. I live alone. My daughters and families do not live close and you are my quilting "family". Keeping me sane does not even touch on what I feel about being a QB member. My day, everyday includes the Quilting Board. Some days I do not feel like talking so I read what others have to say and other days I am thrilled to interject but always, always I learn something new.I personally do not think there could be a better group. I love all of you.

grammysharon 09-22-2011 06:37 AM

I have learned two many things to list and have found so much inspiration. Also so many wonderful recipes which surprised me when I first joined the board but upon thinking about it quilters are inspired as a group and why wouldn't that be cooking and baking also(everything we do)??? I love this board and spend way too much time on it!!!!!

Rose Marie 09-22-2011 06:40 AM

This board has been my best friend for years. It is wonderful to know help is just a click away.
It has grown so much lately that its hard to keep up. I am spending way to much time on it.
As far as learning its just about everything.
Whatever I hear of, it can always be confirmed or rejected by searching the board.

luv2look 09-22-2011 07:09 AM

Each morning I take the kid to school and come back to read this thread. So full of information . . . very helpful. I just wish there were more time in the day. Because I'm a very beginner . . . all of you have taught me everything I know . . . and looking forward to more knowledge for this brain of mine. Thank you EVERYONE!!!
Also, working on my new Quilt room. Painting, sewing a scrappy 4-patch valance, painting the wood words *QUILT* with polka dots to match the valance and also the fan blades of the same pattern! I'm so excited! Thank you, thank you all!

wisconsin 09-22-2011 07:11 AM

This board has changed me in so many ways, I cannot list them all. I look forward to this newsletter every day and my day just would not be the same without it.

alwayslearning 09-22-2011 07:18 AM

What my user name says thanks to you all!

Donna111 09-22-2011 07:19 AM

I found I've changed my housework skills. Don't have time for it anymore since I'm always reading Quilting Board!!

Tinabug 09-22-2011 07:39 AM

Ditto to all of the above. Thanks to all the great info and comradery of the group. It's fun.

What have I changed? My schedule!

manley 09-22-2011 07:59 AM

What's so nice for me is that everybody truly tries to help one another. I have learned a lot of wonderful helpful tips and short cuts. Thanks everybody. :-D

ccrow99 09-22-2011 08:13 AM

I, too, have far too much to list. Was just starting out, after forty years of sewing, with quilting. Did a random search for quilting, found this site, and joined immediately. What I haven't learned directly frim this site, I learned from references from this site. Will be a member forever. Besides where else can you find people like the ones who share this board?

gramtam 09-22-2011 08:23 AM

I have learned sooo much from this board!! I also feel a community of friends that have the love of quilting but also for faith and family! Does anyone else print off their favorite patterns, ideas etc and put them in a binder?? I have a 3" binder bulging from all the things I never want to forget from this site. I guess I don't truly trust the electronics to save this info for me!! But at least it is organized and can easily be found!! lol!!

mammafay 09-22-2011 08:25 AM

Less sewing and more quilting board! LOL

jillaine 09-22-2011 08:39 AM
