Learned lots but am doing less quilting because I spend too much time on the QB...of course loving every moment! My most favorite is being part of a group of quilters who are so very wonderful, kind and generous.
|
I've learned to allow at least 2 hours a day to quilting board
|
Something I have not ever done until now is pre-wash. It's a lot of extra work, so I haven't seen the payoff.,,yet. I just started on a quilt for my oldest grandson. Every piece prewashed and while I was at it I went ahead a pre-washed my small, but growing stash. If I'm going to put that much work into something...I may as well take my time and do it right. Thanks to Quilting Board members.

I have learned that I can do anything I set my mind too. If I need help I come here.

I've found other quilters in my area whom I have met face to face. What fun.

Ditto...great "medicine" for depression and anxiety...also for chronic illness issues...I lurked for a couple of years, too...don't know why it took me so long to join....just glad I did!! |
Dear Jillaine, you have given me so many helpful sites to peruse. The one thing I can't thank everyone enough for is the info and feedback about Featherweights. I have had mine since 1959 when I was 19 years old, used it originally for sewing curtains, slipcovers (my first project and they turned out great), and clothing. Put it away for years, used it only for mending. Then bought a Singer and then a Babylock which I have used for many quilts, both piecing and quilting and for embroidery. The Babylock died recently, was going to be so expensive to fix, so I bought a used Bernina deco 330 (embroidery only.) Through this board I found praise after praise for using the FW for piecing my quilts. Well, I pulled it out about two weeks ago and have had the best and easiest time ever in piecing my quilts. So smooth, consistent and quiet. Thanks to all of you who shared their experiences with their FW. I'll post a picure of this quilt I am making for my son-in-law for Christmas. He likes bears so am using the Bear Paw block pattern and a themed fabric with pictures of bears. Again, thanks to all you great people who share with others on this board.

I had been quilting for a few years but I wasn't very good at it so one night night I did a search for quilting and it brought me here. I was a lurked for 3 years before joining the QB. So I guess you can say I've been here for 5 years now just not as a member. :-) I am sorry about your panic attacks. I have been through them as well. The night time ones are real bad as you can't sleep, no one to talk to except I used to annoy the nurses at the local hospital either by phone and going to see them in person at 1-3am Some times it helped some time not. None of the medication I was on worked as I would try to sleep sitting up in the lounge room so as not to disturb DH as he just didn't understand. I found a cure or relief in getting my new kitten. She helped by just being there. I nearly lost her this week due to a snake but she is home and must be kept quiet in case she has a heart attack HAAAA No suck luck. I now have to lock her in the bathroom to stop her getting out until the Vet says it is alright. If you need to talk about your attacks PM me if you get one before 8.30pm my time and maybe we can go through it together. |

Way to many to list so will tell of one I just learned yesterday.
There is a quilt shop here in Phx. that I did not know about. The board is how I found out and also got a free pattern to boot. |
Way to many to list

i've been reading this thread for a couple days. still haven't gotton all the way thru it. cause i just read a little at rest breaks.
i have learned soooo much here. my jane quilt has taught me the most and all the nice ladies on that thread who helped me. WOW. and i am/was just like the rest of you ladies. sorta self taught, from books, magazines, etc. one machine quilting glass. but i noticed non of you have mentioned organizing your sewing room. i think that putting my material on mini boards, on shelves, and setting up a display wall has helped me lots. |
I too have totaly become a different quilter since joining this board. Went from quilting by myself to quilting with my DIL (really a bonding time for us)then my excitement rubbed on my DD (whom I have tried to interest her in quilting for years) & now I have 3 stations in my quilting room for us all. What a joy this has become.I really didn't know to starch either.I thought your backing was solid & had to match your front. Now I am making the backs with patterns too!! Had to have a featherweight too that my DD has took over(LOVES it)My DD made me a design board from the boards suggestions & he even bastes my quilts for me now. But then there came spray baste OMG wonderful! No QPolice! After being on the board each day my mind just dwells on what I have just learned & how I can use it for myself. I'm 68 but feel like 30. Thought there was just local Hancocks never knew about online stores & E-Bay1 You can imagine that my world just exploded-horizons expanded-Here I go gushing again! Can't talk about quilting without saying MY QUILT BOARD said to do it this way! Love you guys a lot!!!!Got to go now to my local thrift store to see what I can find. Bless you all!

I have learned so much. Glue basting was one.

Honestly??? More than anything I've "changed my mind" the most. Everytime I cruise the board I change my mind about the next project I want to do. Just when I think I've picked a pattern and fabric and colors someone comes along and posts something that catches my eye and I have to start the planning process all over again. Not complaining though, it keeps my creative juices flowing and I love it. Thanks everybody for the inspiration!!! |
I've learned to be on the computer waaaay too long! This board is so addicting.
|
OMGolly, those links you supplied are soooooo awsome. thank you sooooooo much. were you just being tactful, and wanting to show us new things? you are sooooo great. thank you, thank you. i had seen the board method as i was laying out my jane, but your link was super simply. and the glue method for the binding i believe is the best i've seen. could make a show quality quilt more attainable.

So I told her I was very glad that she knew so much about the pattern and how it should be done , asked to see her verson, (she had never done it) and told her since my quilt is so "dredful" ,her word, she did't have to look at it. Shocked the rest of the group, and the instructer, but she shut up and did't critize anyone elses project. Made some new friends that day. The instructer smiled and said I was doing great,(I think she ment the quilt)LOL

My life has changed because I spend at least 2 hours on the QB every day and get nothing done--not a good thing, but I am not complaining. I love the positiveness of the people here...always here when I need advice or need a friend.
I have met a friend,,,an actual real person, who lives in my small town and loves to quilt and is awesome at picking out fabrics (which is one of my downfalls). YEA FOR ME! |
Hi all...ditto...ditto...ditto and more ditto's on all the comments:)
I'm a much better quilter now. Thanks to you all :):):) |
I've learned a lot of things about quilting and the pics of quilts are so gorgeous. I keep seeing patterns I will love to try except that I wish I would have been doing this since I was much younger so I could have made more quilts. Not to mention that everyone is so nice and helpful if you ask a ? someone will look for info for you and it sure does help. I'm making a dresden candle mat and some of the mug rugs in fall colors that I saw on here. Thank you for the leaf I've got 4 colors of three each for myself and my daughter. I need to start sewing more the holidays are coming soon. Many many thanks to everyone for their help. I'm gathering FQ for the swap. However I sprained my bad foot last Fri. and it is still bruised and sore so it has slowed me up and is so anoring. Sue

Sorry to hear about your foot, hope it gets better soon. Scrappy/Linda |
I've been a "quilter wannabe" for a few years. I bought so many books to try to learn how. I bought rulers, fabric, quilting gadgets and never cut one piece of fabric. After I discovered this board, I have learned so much and have learned enough to finally give it a try! My only regret is that I am 78 years old and worry that I won't be around long enough to truly learn and get hooked on quilting. I'm trying to get my second daughter interested in quilting along with me so she can use all of my quilting stash cnd stuff when I'm gone. She has severe depression and I think this would be good for her. She is on disability and has lots of time on her hands.
BTW - I have my mother's Singer 99 in the original cabinet. I can remember learning to sew on it and my oldest daughter who is now 57 also learned to sew on it. It was a great old machine. The people on this board are so caring and helpful and truly make you feel welcome. They are great at encouraging someone like me also. Thanks to all of you. |
Wow, the answer to that question could fill a book. Seems that everyday I pick up a new tip or idea. I think that the biggest change has been organization. I can now find almost anything in just a few minutes rather than 1/2 to 1 hour of searching. I can't thank all the generous members enough for sharing their tips and ideas.
|
went to a yard sale today and saw a beautiful singer treadle cabnet. the machine inside had really been beat around tho. but the cabint was beautiful solid wood. they had $500 on it. sorry. i learned to be tighter with my money, so i can spend more on fabic....LOL

If you could see my "Favorites", is where I keep everything I have learned and then some.
I go to the newsletter when I feel the need to get away from the other chores. The pictures and tutorials are great even though I don't make a comment every time. Everyone works so hard on their projects and serves as an inspiration to do more. |
Hi Scrappy Linda, That's for your kind message. It helps make your spirit feel up at least. Sue

Wow...11 pages and counting...This place is better than an encyclopedia of quilting information. I, too have learned so much! I was a lurker, too, for about 6 months before I joined, and you learn so much more and have more available to you as a member. Thanks, QB...a standing ovation for everyone here!! xo

much too many to list
I am not the same quilter I was one I started this board Thanks to all of you |
Since I started on this board I seem to quilt less and spend more time on here...snicker!

1. Double-layer binding for a stronger edge. I particularly liked this tutorial which also introduced me to an easy approach to mitred corners: Sharon Schambers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PE0Yq9iGlc 2. Using starch to reshape pieces. (I never used starch before!) In particular, Sharon Schamber's great set of tutorials here really helped me turn a monster of a problem quilt into something at least acceptable when I ran into problems. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQkF02vpVuw 3. Hand-basting of quilts (including the starching of backing). This has totally changed the quality of my finished quilts, reducing puckers. (I used to do minimal basting on the floor.) Using Sharon's boards method has made basting quick, enjoyable and I know that I'll end up with a better product. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhwNylePFAA 4. Free Motion Quilting. I didn't even know about this before, much less that I could do this on a plain ol' sewing machine. I particularly enjoyed Leah Day's "Free Motion Quilting Project" at http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.c...tart-here.html She has great tutorials for a slew of different FMQ patterns, but it is her energy and straightforwardness and simplicity that drew me in, and made it seem like even I could try it. I still have a lot more to learn, but these four have really changed how I do things. What about you? What have you changed or strengthened as a result of using this board? -- Jillaine |
I think as much as anything I've learned not to be so hard on myself and the board has inspired me to get organized and has renewed my will to sew and look forward to things I had lost interest in for so long. Thanks you guys.
