You are unbelieveable! (Of course I spent the last HOURS at the computer watching so many of your picks!!!!) WOW...... Thanks for the info.........I wonder if I will ever have the time to do actual QUILTING!!!!!!LOL!!!!!

Maresan 09-22-2011 08:56 AM

Fairly new to this board but thanks for the links. I want to learn to free motion quilt and there's alot of great information here.

zig56gie 09-22-2011 09:00 AM

love the board and the people here. Especially the fur babies.
What I have learned--
Quilting is a fun activity
Quilt police are not in authority here
Colours are subjective to a persons style and taste
Lots of good ideas and tutorials as well as information how to access others
Great people with wonderful sense of humour and great ideas
Giving people who care for their community and share more than quilting tips
Hugs when needed-pushes when needed and most of all acceptance-always

Elmer's water soluble white glue. Apply very very sparingly and press with hot iron, then sew your binding down as usual. If you make mistake it pulls apart easily.

sguillot 09-22-2011 09:31 AM

Yes, I print way to many but you never know when the perfect one will come along.

thinking of getting a quilt specific system! For all the great ideas here!

TinkerQuilts 09-22-2011 10:02 AM

What I have changed is that my sewing and quilting rooms are much more organized. Also have learned SO much about why I make mistakes and not to take them so seriously. And my "quilts to make" list has gotten SO long from all of the beautiful work seen on the board!!!

MadQuilter 09-22-2011 10:05 AM

I ventured out and participated in a round robin and a row robin. Would not have dared work on anyone else's top before then (the "not good enough syndrome).

I learned to appreciate patterns and colors that I don't particularly like.

I had to admit that I am addicted to this place.

...and a whole bunch more.

callie72va 09-22-2011 10:14 AM

thanks for the Sharon Schamber video on basting. I hate pins! She is surely on of the great quilters.

aronel 09-22-2011 10:19 AM

The main thing among many is what wonderful people there are on this board!

I found out I am not the only one with a passion for old sewing machines, since joining this board, I have purchased two Featherweights, one treadle (I already had one), and a 99-31. I have learned so much more, but it is hard to list, as I have used so much information that I have received from the wonderful people here.

I feel truly blessed. Thank you all my friends.

bnndr 09-22-2011 10:30 AM

I have learn soooo much on this board, but the reverse applique technique has been eye opener. Love this technique. I have also refered so many people to this site. Love it and all the chatter on the board.

Rosie the "Ripper" 09-22-2011 10:46 AM

I have learned everything I know about machine quilting on this board. All my cutting and piecing used to be by hand and the rotary cutter was something I never knew existed.

Besides seeing what everyone else has been working on, great tips and videos, I have come in contact with so many generous and talented people. Everyone is so eager to help and sincere in their comments.

My mother passed away five years ago. She was my biggest fan. My DH always reminds me that there was NOTHING I couldn't do well in my mother's eyes and that I was always right! I sometimes feel that this board IS my mom speaking to me from above. It is such a comforting feeling, especially since I am usually in an experimental state when I am quilting, but everyone makes me feel like I can do anything, and with practice, I can even do it well.

So a big HUG to all my quilting friends. You are the greatest!!!!! Please.....Keep teaching me. Thank You All!

justflyingin 09-22-2011 10:57 AM

Just simply encouragement to keep trying something harder and keep improving my skills. Also, that others are also beginners in FMQ and I can get encouragement here if needed.

JoanneS 09-22-2011 11:06 AM

I forgot to mention that I finally organized my fabric because I learned about wrapping it around a core and standing it upright. SO MUCH BETTER than piles of fabric getting messed up every time I need the one on the bottom!

In doing this, I realized that I can't possibly use all my stash in my lifetime!

sguillot 09-22-2011 11:19 AM

If you are thinkiing in terms of a long arm, check them all out. It is a big investment and there is a learning curve but well worth the time and money especially if you plan to make a business out of it.

Oh my, where to start, where to start???

Murphy1 09-22-2011 11:30 AM

But you do live in paradise. I have found that any nook in my house is fair game for my quilting stuff and that scrappy quilts are a delight. I too, dream of all the quilts I am inspired by on this board. Most of all it is getting to know those that have the same interests - the quilting board is far better than facebook.

I used to dust and do laundry, and kept a lovely home. Now I only dust where I need to stack more fabric. Saves SO much time!

I used to make great meals for my family. Now Meals-On-Wheels saves me so much time better spent on this Board!

Now, now I sit staring at this screen all day, feeling inspired by all the beautiful projects the Board members are creating. I imagine all the quilts I'm going to make... if I still had a job to earn the money to buy fabric, and if I hadn't sold my sewing studio furniture to pay for my internet service!

LOL!

luckylindy333 09-22-2011 11:42 AM

I used to read at night, now I surf the Quilting Board- hee hee. I have found so many easy quilt patterns and fun websites on this board. I don't think I do anything too differently at far as quiling techniques, I guess I am pretty set in my ways. I can't really learn something unless I have a live person showing me for the most part, especially if it is a complicated thing. I really enjoy the community and the moral support.

Mom and I used the ruler folding technique to refold and organize all of our fabric (we sort of share a stash).

cherrio 09-22-2011 11:49 AM

ok, I too will try to give a short version. I have always been a "shoot from the hip" kinda girl; just felt that life is too short to be fake. that being said; the watchful eye of the moderators here have made me realize that sometimes it is enough to "play nice". Just because I have an opinion on something, or because my way would surely have been better (insert sarcasm here) lol, does't mean I have to voice it harshly. And I now actually think before I speak (most of the time)both online and off, and when I don't . . . I delete my rant when possible hopefully before it causes contraversy or hurt feelings. I am not a great quilter and absolutely love and value all the tips, advise, pictures and help and friendly feeling I have found here

patdesign 09-22-2011 11:50 AM

So much that you would have to read all day after I typed all day. Love this board!!:)

What I have learned from the QB is that quilters all over the world are just as friendly and helpful as they are locally. I cannot imagine not being a part of the QB now.

ditto

Debo 09-22-2011 12:19 PM

Too many to list because it seems like everyday I learn something new. I'm a self-taught quilter so this board has been a valuable resource.

Learner747 09-22-2011 12:45 PM

As I read what everyone has learned I realize that I have much more to learn. Like what is Glue Basting?

mary hennessey 09-22-2011 12:47 PM

What is mole skin?

Flying_V_Goddess 09-22-2011 12:49 PM

I joined the board a few months after I started quilting so a good percentage of how I quilt came from this board.

athomenow 09-22-2011 12:51 PM

I've learned to slow down and enjoy the process more. I am goal oriented and often don't get things done correctly because I'm trying to get to the end. Now I'm trying to focus on the moment and see each step as the goal! Also that there is an answer for anything I need to know and it's usually on this board. Don't even have to ask the question, just read through the posts!

mcdaniel023 09-22-2011 12:52 PM

I have learned so much. My quilting has improved 100%.
Most of all, I have learned that board members are the most amazing, giving people.

Marcia D 09-22-2011 01:09 PM

I've learned: 1) That is's ok to ask for help; 2) to wash fabric first; and 3) that I can become addicted to something. I have so many things still to learn. My husband would say that I learned how to spend more money. :-)

BettyGee 09-22-2011 01:26 PM

I've learned so many things I can't begin to list them all. To Candlequilter for showing me the wonderful world of paper piecing, to CraftyBear for guiding me to all those wonderful sites and to all the terrific people I now call friends. This isn't just a quilting forum, it is a family and everyday I see the love in the posts and the responses.

Barbm 09-22-2011 01:32 PM

I found the board because I didn't have anyone to teach me and I have learned more than I could ever absorb! And after a few years, I realize much of my expertise is due to all the wonderful quilters here!

You actually use washaway glue (school glue) to attach the applique pieces to hold them in place while sewing them down. Glue also comes in handy for the binding process.

I think its first use it to put it in shoes as a cushion for bunions. It's a tannish color thick pad that can be cut and stuck to the sewing machine as a 1/4" guide.

Don't know that I've changed a lot but have realized I'm a member of a wonderful family who are caring, considerate, helpful, supportive and above all loving.Thank you everyone.

sewNso 09-22-2011 03:37 PM

i hope you ALL post what you have learned. so tomorrow i can read it and find out what i don't know. :) :)

Grambi 09-22-2011 04:12 PM

Wow--have learned so much from this board!! I can't think of anything to put down right now that hasn't already been mentioned numerous times. Oh yeah, I did learn about Featherweights and 301's and now have one of each. Not to mention that I learned what I want for the next 10 or so sewing machines (lol). I love this board and everyone on it--this is my main social life these days!

San Diego Quilter 09-22-2011 04:29 PM

Oh my gosh.... I learned some GREAT tips just by reading this post! I've never heard of using glue... had never seen the basting method. I cannot wait to try both new tricks this weekend.

Now if I could just figure a way out of the day job (but keep the paycheck!) to allow more time for quilting.... :) Anyone learn how to do that yet?
