Pictures of loved ones, artwork children made, beautiful fabric, quiet if I want or do lots of music, and my lighting and of course Bernina. Oh and forgot my large design wall, in basement so clean when I want to as well, cool in summer, and I am def in that age group of always warm, haha.

#1piecemaker 02-25-2011 04:07 AM

Because it is filled with fabric!!

SuziC 02-25-2011 04:15 AM

My sewing space is special because it is set up the way i want it and no one else needs to go in there (unless invited) Just having a "me space" gives me peace of mind that my projects will sit and wait for me untouched.

What makes my room special? I designed it for ME! I told my construction guy what I wanted and he did it. I have 3/4 of the basement. I have loads of closets so I can put everything away and not have to look at it. I have a large (60"x80") padded ironing table and a 40"x60" cutting table. I don't like things stored out in the open so I have file drawers for all my sewing notions. It still gets cluttered, but at least I have a space for everything.

My sewing room is my creative room. Used to be my sons bedroom until he married. It's all about sewing, my room, my stuff, although there is only me and my DH in the house.
When I go into my sewing room, all I think about is sewing/quilting. My quiet room to concentrate on quilts.
No TV, no radio, no food or drink, just me, the quilt I am working on, and my Bernina.
I quilt during the day when DH is at work. So the house is quiet, no background noise.

It has a sense of calm.

He took me shopping before that to see if we could find a nice desk to turn into a sewing table. I didn't want to spend several hundred to a couple of thousand dollars so he is going to buy and cut plexiglass to fit the top of my current table and fit it to the edges of my sewing machine. He is going to make a larger ironing board so I can iron full yards of fabric without having to do half and then turn it around to iron the other half. He comes in to help me with design and sews my fabric before I prewash it. My DH makes my sewing room special for me. :)

Do you think you could possibly clone him and pass him around? What a treasure you have there ...

It's a major mess, I don't have to clean it up until it gets even too messy for me AND DH is afraid to enter LOL

Because it is all mine, and when I'm in there I'm surrounded by all the things I love! My fabric, my grandmother's sewing machine in the cabinet my grandfather built, my project cases full of UFOs, my quilt tops, a comfy chair for my daughter when she drops in, my tv and movies to play while I sew, a radio if I want music, my chair on wheels so I can wheel from sewing machine to cutting table.... oh, I love it so much, why am I here instead of in there sewing???!!!

NDQuilts 02-25-2011 05:17 AM

I have room built just for me. My favorite features are one long wall just for my hand quilting frame. The opposite wall has built in shelving running it's length. I ran track lighting so there is lots of light and I can add more as necessary. The room also allows for multiple workstations so I can have two more people crafting with me with out being crowded. Special touches include a candle and pictures of my kids.

love your avartat quilt, midwest mary

My sewing room is a finished room in the basement. My DH & DD finished it for ME. It is small, but it is mine. Very few people come to MY room. I think it is too scary for them non-quilters. It really is big enough for two, but most of the time it only has room for me. I tend to spread out when I creat.

TootieAnn 02-25-2011 06:19 AM

It's mine! Actually, I don't have a sewing room. My machine is on my desk in the dining room. My fabric and ironing board are in my bedroom. Not ideal, but it works for now.

Jagsd3 02-25-2011 06:21 AM

My quilting room is half a basement, and I think what makes it special is everyone knowing it is open at all times I am in it. Two chairs sit by the woodstove with A cup of coffee here, a hug there, a phone call coming in, or whatever is going on at the time.

CraftyGardenMom 02-25-2011 06:23 AM

Having recently moved my sewing room from a small corner in the basement to our living room, I can say it's special to me because it's such an open space and it allows me to display all of my fabric and tools wonderfully and so accessible to me when I need them. I no longer have to hunt for anything when I need it. It truly allows me to feel and be so much more creative.

Riversong 02-25-2011 06:29 AM

Mine is special because my hubby gave up our bedroom for me to use. I have to sleep in a recliner due to pain issues etc.,so hubby had the bedroom all to himself. (Our house only has 1 bedroom) My sewing space was in a narrow pantry room off of the kitchem. He got rid of the queen bed and bought a twin bed and turned the pantry room into a bedroom so I could have the bigger room for sewing!!! He is wonderful!!! All he has in his room is a twin bed,a chest of drawers and a rocker all crammed in. Bless his heart!!!!

queenlatte 02-25-2011 06:46 AM

My DH & I share a small bedroom (there's no bed). There's a corner for him with his computer. A corner for me with my Babylock. A small couch with a TV across on the wall. Next to my sewing table is a treadmill. In the closet are a few shelves. Hanging on the closet door is my ironing board. I LOVE IT. It's perfect!!

mommafank 02-25-2011 06:56 AM

Not!

Scakes 02-25-2011 06:56 AM

It's mine! LOL. I have a dvd player and lots of movies - mostly musical so I can just enjoy listening if I get busy and can't watch. I also have my ipod set up with speakers and it plays loud enough to drown out a lot of the noise from outside or downstairs.

ShowMama 02-25-2011 07:00 AM

My sewing room is special because it's all mine. We converted a one-car garage that we only used for storage and had parked the car in there only twice in over 20 years! I painted the walls a bright cheerful sunny lemon yellow and there are two windows to let in light. My husband built three sets of floor to ceiling cabinets for storage, plus a huge worktable with two sets of drawers and lots of electrical outlets on each side. And just this Christmas he added a book shelf on the end of one of the tall cabinets to hold all my quilting books. I have my own TV with cable and DVD player. Just through the doorway in the utility room there's a refrigerator with cold drinks. Now, if only I could figure out how to use the sewing machine from a recliner, I'd really be set!

memepat 02-25-2011 07:05 AM

I love my quilting room. It is truly me!! Sometimes it is organized but sometimes it is a mess but both are okay. It reflects the things that are important to me (family, friends, etc.) It is also a place I can leave a mess turn off the light and go to bed and come back to the mess later.

lakesidequilter 02-25-2011 07:14 AM

Oh yeah, I have a "woman -cave" as many of the DH's friends like to call it. It's in the lower level of our rambler home--newly built about 5 years ago. I have the puter, my nursing textbooks--as I am a full-time student as well as an avid quilter. All my quilting fabrics, machines and supplies. And to make it more like "home" I've added a comfy sofa (in front of the library of books I own) and a flat screen TV, and nice shelf stereo system. All that and a DVD/VCR combo. There isn't much I'm missing and I spend most of my days in here!

Dianne1 02-25-2011 07:22 AM

It is all mine. Every stray pin, unraveled spool of thread, every wrinkled pattern and magazine and all the fabric draped across the LA that might match the quilt I am currently putting together. It is where my heart is.

moreland 02-25-2011 07:25 AM

This sounds like I could have written it!!

BeckiQuilts 02-25-2011 07:25 AM

I love my sewing room. I put WHATEVER I want in there. The special place is a bundle of clean clothes on the floor where my GD can take her nap while I sew. I told her a long time ago to lie down and listen to my sewing machine as it hums. It worked then, and I love it! My quilting frame is a different story. It will only fit in my large living room/dining room/kitchen. It is not in the way, but I can look out the doors and watch geese, ducks and other wildlife. I couldn't be happier!

TexasGurl 02-25-2011 07:33 AM

Mine is special ... because it's all MINE ... my getaway !
After years of working in a corner of the BR or on the dining room table, it's great to have my OWN space. I don't have to stop and put things away ! I have my music, my design wall, good lighting and all my stuff in one place, finally ! The only thing I'm lacking is space for a comfy chair but that's ok, I'd probably nap instead of sewing ! :)

When we bought our house my sewing room was a hot tub room. We had it renovated into exactly what I wanted. I have windows on two sides that give me lots of natural light, but no wall space. I'd rather have the light. I can also see all the wild life that roams through our yard this way. I love it. The other two walls have floor to ceiling built-in cupboards with doors. My sewing machine is in the corner so I can see the birds at the bird feeders while I sew. I have a sliding glass door out to the deck that I can open in the summer. My cutting table is our very first piece of furniture we bought when we were first married. It is the perfect size for the large Olfa cutting mat. My mother's old rocking chair sits in the corner. I have a TV in one corner and a CD player on my chest of drawers that I use to listen to books on tape. I also have a gravity feed iron that I love. My sewing room is where I go to relax from the stress of work. My doctor diagnosed me with high blood pressure. I have been taking my blood pressue several times a day. I find I can lower my blood pressue by 20 points by spending just a half hour in my sewing room. I can't imagine my life without this room.

grannypat7925 02-25-2011 07:45 AM

I have a nice big room, formerly the Florida room, but have to figure out a way to heat it up in the coldest weather. I'm sure I will have it figured out before next winter arrives!

SueJ 02-25-2011 07:57 AM

We have an upstairs laundry room with beautiful real wood paneling. I set up a desk with my sewing machine across from the washer/dryer & on the wall between I set up my cutting table. There is also a closet which is open where I am putting my fabrics so I can admire them when I am sewing. I didn't think I would like it but I absolutely love it now plus laundry is always caught up!!

2manyprojects 02-25-2011 07:57 AM

it is my own domain, if it is messy, I close the door...I have an old recliner that I can relax and "just think" in, It has 3 windows bringing in all the afternoon sun and it relaxes me...

EdieClay 02-25-2011 08:08 AM

It's mine, it's pepto bismal pink, it's filled with stuff I love, it has pictures of trips I have made, it's very girly, it has windows across the front that look out on the lake, others only enter at their own risk, it's mine!

lillybeck 02-25-2011 08:19 AM

I love my room becuse I can leave things laying anywhere I want to.

tntgranny 02-25-2011 08:46 AM

My room isn't as large as I would like - surprise isn't it. We converted one of the kids bedrooms. Put a cubical wall on the full wall. Emptied out the closet including the hanging rod - but kept the shelf. Put cubicals & storage drawer cabinet in there. Made a cubical TV stand - for my small HD TV with a DVR. Added a desk that is also my sewing table. Built a rolling cutting table with storage underneath. The greatest thing is I did it all myself (well my daughter helped with the construction). Even stripped the wallpaper and painted above and below the chair rail. My husband is a painting decorating contractor and kind of takes over in that department at home. This room is totally my design - wall color, shelves, everything. Did it when he was on a fishing trip. When he came home he was very gracious - didn't even comment on my not quite perfect paint job. Even helped to remove the paint I dripped on the floor. Best thing - it is MY ROOM!

Bev 02-25-2011 08:48 AM

The special thing about it is the feeling I get whenever I enter it. It's a place of peace and quiet. I put some very soft music on the cd player and just float away. No other room in the house makes me feel that way. 8-)

BJ SewKkrazzy 02-25-2011 09:34 AM

Ditto everyone! My sewing room is large, in the basement, faces north, so it doesn't get hot from afternoon sun; painted light yellow, with purple and pink as accent colors; loved that rashberry color mention! I have a desk at one end that my sewing machine sits on, cabinets for books and beads, etc. a cutting table that can roll out...another desk at the other end for my computer. I love to scan onto fabric, and in my last house the computer was on the second floor and my sewing room was in the basement...two flights of stairs apart!
My hubby has his own room and his own computer...we like our spaces!

JNCT14 02-25-2011 09:57 AM

My is small but really functional - every bit of wall and floor space is used. I put up pretty fabrics, quilt pictures for inspiration, directions, pieces of art...all over the walls without worrying about decor. I love the sewing tables that my dad is making me. And as everyone has said - mine MINE!!!

I know they are not very energy efficient but wouldn't one of those electric fireplaces be relaxing in there? Some of them are really beautiful and plug into a 110 outlet. I have thought about one for my room but I am not sure if there is enough room for it.

MadQuilter 02-25-2011 10:54 AM

I have an IKEA cabinet with glass doors for my books, a TV-DVR, and a comfy chair for hubby to visit. The walls are yellow and it makes me happy to be in there. Guests at our house are SOL.

polly13 02-25-2011 11:08 AM

I LOVE my sewing room. My computer is there as well as all of my sewing supplies so can download whatever I want. Our former house was very old and decorated in a country style. This is a ranch and it just doesn't work, but my sewing room is all Americana and it's very cozy. It's close enough to hubby as he watches tv. Wouldn't change it for the world.

shaverg 02-25-2011 11:08 AM

I have a little flat screen TV, and Dh bought be a glider chair with foot stool and I have a lovely Ott floor lamp, which allows for me to see to hand quilt and applique. I love my quilt room. Although sometimes it is hard for me to leave it is just so cozy.
I also have lovely ikea cabinets and use a drafting table for a cutting area, which is perfect height. He also added a table to my sewing cabinet to make it an L shape next to my machine which allows me to have a great working space and a place to put my laptop.
