I was in the process of setting up my quilting room in our spare bedroom downstairs. It was going to be my special, all mine, quiet room. Well we have an unexpected guest staying with us for a while, so I have put some of the finishing touches for my room on hold. But I always love to hear how some of you have made your quilting rooms like your personal sanctuary and a place you love to be. I was curious what some you have added to or have done to your rooms that make them such a special place?

roseOfsharon 02-24-2011 05:30 PM

What's special about my sewing area: Well I really must say, I have alot of room to move around. It is not really set up as a sewing room. I use part of the basement and have not set up any shelves or walls for quilting or sewing notions! I am some organized though even without those. lol

mcdaniel023 02-24-2011 05:36 PM

I love my room. I not only have great sewing supplies, lots of room, music, and a tv, I have a treadle and rocking chair that belonged to my grandmother in law. I was always in awe of her hand quilting and other hand work sitting in that chair. It is like she is there smiling with me.

sueisallaboutquilts 02-24-2011 05:38 PM

I love my room b/c every single thing in it is mine alone. There is no reason for anyone else to go in there. I love my family to death but I need my "space". I have some other things besides sewing items but mostly sewing related.
Virginia Woolf wrote about "A Room of One's Own".
She was far ahead of her time! :)

ShirlinAZ 02-24-2011 05:41 PM

In my sewing room (the spare bedroom) I can do whatever I want. DH has a corner for his tools and a comfy chair in case he needs it, but I have all the things I want on the walls, and I have all the storage I need. This is my spot to arrange or rearrange as I want without asking DH or worrying about intruding on him. That's what makes it special. Everything is arranged for ME.

Jill 02-24-2011 05:52 PM

The "thing" that makes it special is that it's all mine, and no one else needs to be in here. I have everything that is needed for my quilting. I have my computer, my Bose radio/CD player and a DVD player. The walls are covered with pictures of my kids and GC, my cross stitch samplers, and a quilted wallhanging. I could stay in here for hours and hours....in fact, I do!

sewingsuz 02-24-2011 05:53 PM

My sewing room is special to me because it is my room and where i can get away by myself.

My sewing room is my bedroom and part of the living room but I must say it feels special to me because of the doll quilts that I have hung on the wall from wonderful board members. I really love looking at them every day.

Ditto with one exception - my dog thinks its his room too

Izaquilter 02-24-2011 06:20 PM

Because it's MY sewing space. I don't have to pack it up every Thanksgiving like I use to & drag it all back out after the first of the year. If it's a disaster zone, which it is alot of the time, I just close the door. No one gets upset with me because of my mess! I do clean up in between projects & right now I am in the middle of about 4 projects so you can imagine what it looks like. Each day tho I am closer to being done & clean it back up!

jdiane318 02-24-2011 06:22 PM

I love my room because it has everything I need in there. I have a window to watch the weather and the birds, and if worse comes to worse, I can close the door. It is my haven to be alone and create.

Kathy N 02-24-2011 06:22 PM

I love the common thread here....we love our rooms because they are ours!!!

My favorite part is my dogs bed. She will not let me be in my room unless she gets to come along too!!!! She even has her own doll quilt hanging on the wall above her bed thanks to sapdoggie who make her a little beagle quilt!!

JT 02-24-2011 06:26 PM

My room is my own. I can spend all day there if I want. I have a restroom right next door, a TV, good lighting, a refrigerator about 20 feet away, a telephone with call ID, so I can decide if I want to answer or not. I have it decorated for me, no one else. I have nice cabinets for storage. It's GREAT!!! And it makes me HAPPY!!

LeeAnn 02-24-2011 06:27 PM

My sewing room is special because it has everything that I love. My treadle, my vintage rocker, a great stash and wonderful sewing tools. I even have my great grandmother's lantern that she carried to the outhouse at night. It's the new mixed with the old that I like. It's a quite place where I can create.

luvTooQuilt 02-24-2011 06:28 PM

Because it is a room for me to 'getaway'. It's all quilting related stuff in there and no one but me ( and sometimes my lil one) will need to go in there. It's a place for me to hide, create and get lost for a while. I refuse to call it my own because hubby comes in to chat from time to time and I like that he likes to sit and watch and spend time with me while I'm working on my hobby. He's got a special place too and my lil one and I sit and watch daddy do his hobby- woodturning In the shop. We both respect eachothers hobbies and when privacy is desired. Win win situation !

Qbee 02-24-2011 06:29 PM

I'm like everyone else...it is mine....ALL MINE :D
I painted it a salmon color (the men call it "pink") and it is very "girly"....like being a little girl with her own bedroom again. For me, it is twice as special because we were not well off when I was a child so I never had the matching bedding, curtains and all that but always dreamed of it. My isn't even done yet and I swear it is taking me so long because I'm having so much fun with the decorating!
I too, have LOTS of family pictures...it's everything that I like. :D

Jeanniejo 02-24-2011 06:29 PM

It's the only space that is ALL MINE !!!!! No one in my family even goes in it. Guess they are all afraid they will be swallowed up by fabric !!!

California Girl 02-24-2011 06:30 PM

I share our family room with my DH and our dog, Teddy. I have half and he has half for a media room. He can watch TV or movies and I can quilt and since we are not able to spend much time together, we can still be in the same room without feeling guilty that I'm quilting and he's sitting my himself somewhere else in the house. I can look out onto the backyard, and be in an open and peaceful place. And he can help hold my quilt when I need an extra hand and still watch TV. It's the best of all worlds for us. Thanks for letting me share.

luckylindy333 02-24-2011 06:31 PM

I think that is the biggest thing that makes it special- it is mine! My DH uses it as a dressing room sometimes, but only so he won't wake me. He is special, too.

I love my little spot because it is on the main floor of the house. It's the far side of our bedroom, but I love our bedroom. I love that it's a simple space. I have everything that I need. It's warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. I have a television and my comfortable bed to rest on if some afternoon show piques my interest. I feel happy inside when I work there. I'm spoiled, and I love it. :-)

Country1 02-24-2011 07:09 PM

For me it is that it is close to everything and everyone else in the house, but all the things my husband and I have come up with for it. I recently posted pics for my favorite wall in there, which has alot of family memories. Think I'll take some more pics tomorrow and post some more of the room.

quiltjoey 02-24-2011 07:14 PM

I love my sewing room because I can walk away from it and leave everything as it is and I don't HAVE to straighten, dust, or clean it if I don't want to; I can have all my "chotskys" I want every where; I can put on the walls what I want to, like rulers, small odd-ball purses, little wooden sewing machine, spools of thread, my Scriptual sayings I find at junk stores; little and big plastic boxes with remnants, stabilizers, patterns, thread; my Mac for surfing and my Toshiba for embroidery, my laser printer for printing lots of pages fast, my regular printer for scanning and copying, my TV; my Spartan, 99K, newer Singer, old Kenmore, little Janome; fabrics, fabrics, fabrics; and last but definitely not least, my Husqvarna Viking Designer 1. I guess by now y'all noticed all the "mys"! Like everyone else; It's all mine!!

happyscrappy 02-24-2011 07:43 PM

it's mine!!! everything in there is mine. it's ALL mine.

Tropical 02-24-2011 07:44 PM

My sewing room is special because it is just for me. My DH comes in to visit and will do anything I ask to make my room better. He has come up with ideas for it and went shopping twice this week to get another large table for cutting, layout, and pinning. He bought material and made extensions for the legs. He took me shopping before that to see if we could find a nice desk to turn into a sewing table. I didn't want to spend several hundred to a couple of thousand dollars so he is going to buy and cut plexiglass to fit the top of my current table and fit it to the edges of my sewing machine. He is going to make a larger ironing board so I can iron full yards of fabric without having to do half and then turn it around to iron the other half. He comes in to help me with design and sews my fabric before I prewash it. My DH makes my sewing room special for me. :)

gzuslivz 02-24-2011 07:49 PM

My sewing room is just getting started. It is special because my hubs is really involved in designing. And because it's been a long time coming.

cathyvv 02-24-2011 07:57 PM

Well, I can only think of one thing that makes my sewing room (which is spread out all over the house) special: Me!

If I didn't enjoy it, it wouldn't be special.

sak658 02-24-2011 08:41 PM

I like my sewing room, I have it all organized and love to collect stuff. And it shows. My hubby is on the computer a lot, and its in my sewing room, so he plays and I play. When he gets tired, he goes into the den and reads or watches tv. We both are retired, so we do whatever we want too. I can stay in mine all day and never get tired of it. Sometimes I come out to cook, and sometimes not. LOL I'm going to take some pics too and may put them on the board. All my stash is in chests and drawers, nothing showing. Some stackables, only thing missing is a design wall, but I have a temporary one on the back of my door. So it works. I could use more lighting, but its ok for now. This room was suppose to be a formal living room, but never used for that. The door closes it off from the entrance hall. So all is good.

woody1229 02-24-2011 08:50 PM

I don't have a sewing room in our teeny tiny house, but I claimed a little nook notched out of our bedroom. It's impossibly small, but very efficiently laid out so that I have everything at my fingertips! There are two nice windows for light and pretty foliage. I am a huge fan of Abraham Lincoln, so I have my two favorite Lincoln portraits looking down on me as I create and sew! I love the organization of my little space, although I can't deny that I dream of the day when I might have a whole room to make my own. Never take it for granted, those of you who have the luxury of space!!

deedum 02-24-2011 09:11 PM

I finally got a real sewing room after 34 yrs, yes I love it! Nothing is in it except for me,and my sewing stuff! What makes it most special is the peg board my dh put up for me, the big board ironing board he would only make for me, the shelves he painted and hung! My old machines he cleaned and oil and have them looking like new! It is special because of him!

grumpy90650 02-24-2011 09:39 PM

because it is mine......

Leota 02-24-2011 09:40 PM

I get my own little room and I can close the door :D
Best of all I don't have to share :D

BluegrassGurl 02-24-2011 09:47 PM

I am currently re-organizing/decorating my sewing area in our basement. Right now... my most favorite part about it is the warm and cheerful, yellow walls.... they make me smile. Can't wait to pull it all together!

sharoney 02-24-2011 09:56 PM

My sewing room is actually the master bedroom of our house. DH and I have our bedroom in one of the smaller bedrooms, and all because I have so much stuff. Our house has 3 bedrooms, and our kids are grown. DH has his home office in the other smaller bedroom, so my workroom has to be a guest room, too. The master is the only room large enough to have a double guest bed plus 2 sewing tables, a cutting table, and my computer table. And I also have a bathroom all to myself! But the best part is the master bedroom has an atrium all to itself, with one wall being two huge plate glass windows, 52"x70" that look out on the atrium, which has a patio table and chairs, and a fountain, and plants, and is open to the sky.

quilt queen 2 02-24-2011 10:10 PM

My space is small 7x7 I think but it is cheerful I have a nice window to look outside lots of storage and I'm happy To spend a lot of cold winter days sewing and dreaming it's just a peaceful retreat for me.

happynana 02-24-2011 10:37 PM

Because it is "My" room. It is painted raspberry sherbet with navy accents. I have all my pictures on the walls and my collection of mice is in here along with my hoosier cabinet that I brought from Pittsburgh with me. I have my computer here too, and a couple of comfy chairs-which Sassy will grudgingly let me share once in a while lol. She is my cat and loves to be here with me when I sew. It is a very girly room and I love it. My private, getaway space.

grammy6 02-24-2011 11:28 PM

Because its MINE. ....ok well maybe I share with my grandkids too

Anne P 02-25-2011 12:04 AM

Mine is special because it is a space dedicated to whatever I want to do there. Also, it has the beautiful, gorgeous, very handy cabinet for my sewing machine. My husband made the cabinet for me and it is awesomee. I have room for a big cutting table, which he made also. There is a lot of storage, too.

Edie 02-25-2011 03:40 AM

I face the east and in the morning the sunrises are glorious, the snow can be beautiful in the winter, the leaves and grass in the spring and summer. I can say hi to the neighbors and they stop by and visit. I open the windowblinds first thing in the morning and they are the last to close in the evening. I keep most of my fabric in the basement on shelves and bring up what I need at the time. It works perfect for me in our small home. In the afternoon we are on a flight path to the international airport and I can sew and watch the planes come in and wonder where they have been or where they are going. I love this area of the house. My husband calls it the best spot in the house and he is so right. Edie

oneygirl 02-25-2011 03:47 AM

My sewing room is pink and very girly. It is just dreamy to go in there! Sometimes it gets very cluttered up with stacks of fabric and various projects/UFO's that need to be finished. I feel like I am on a short vacation from the everyday stresses of life when I am able to retreat to my sewing room, cut fabric, sew, iron and create beautiful things. I guess the anectdote "I would rather be Quilting" could be used by me daily! :)
