I don't sew in my "sewing room". I have my cutting board, fabric neatly stored, a quilt rack and all my small tools for quilting etc. in there. But the one thing I really need for sewing is not in there. I love natural light and the end of my family room has a nice large window to let the sun into and this is where I love to sew. Since my DH passed away I have the whole house to myself so I can really get into the sewing mood and only stop when I want to stop. That window makes a world of difference for me. Sunshine is so wonderful for keeping a person in a good mood.

I know what you mean, my sewing room has great natural light too, which is great for hand quilting and my sewing machine is right under the window. At night I use my ott light it definitely helps with quilting at night.

Hubby has his man cave, I have my sewingroom. Every single thing in it relates to me and no one else...my collection of giraffes, sewing collectibles and thimble cabinet. Since there are scissors in the laundryroom, kitchen & both bathrooms there's no reason for anyone to even walk thru the door...except the dog and cat. Each has her favorite spot to curl up or stretch out while we keep each other company.

It's my "Mancave" and best not to enter without appointment

I loved hearing what everyone loves about their sewing areas. I really see a common thread (LOL!) about it being their own private area. I realize that is what made me so happy about mine. It was all my stuff and I was making it just the way I wanted it, nobody messing it up all the time. I feel a twinge of regret about offering it to my quest (long story) even though I am glad I did and would do it again. All of my stuff is still in the room at one end and the bed is at the other end but it seems awkward trying to use it when someone is staying there. I have a table in the living room I am using right now but it makes our small living room a mess. So.... I have been trying to come up with a creative way to find some space maybe in the laundry room or ??? to set up a temporary space that isn't in the way all of the time and where I can find some quiet time!

sewmom 02-25-2011 01:32 PM

I have a door that i can close and everything that I need to create and unwind. Now if only it was more organized.....

fairydawn 02-25-2011 01:53 PM

My sewing room was my daughters bedroom, when she moved out I took over. It's not a large room but,it is my sanctuary. I have every thing I need in there to make me a happy sewer.{including my stash of chocolate}

charhend 02-25-2011 01:53 PM

About four years ago we built a separate 400 sq. ft. quilting room just for me. I love it, it's not attached to the house and I feel like I am on a retreat. Two brother sewing machines an HQ16 long arm and tons of fabric. I am a happy camper!

yesyoucan 02-25-2011 02:15 PM

my happy place is happy because I'm in it.

Taughtby Grandma 02-25-2011 02:18 PM

I have my grandmothers sewing machine in there with me. Which is fitting since that's what I learned to sew on.

My Cat's Belle 02-25-2011 03:04 PM

My room is in total chaos and needs to be straightened up, but I have to be 'immersed' sometimes to be creative. I can't go from a blank room and immediately start sewing unless I already have the fabric laid out. So I love my room because it lets me do that, and that it is large enough to allow me to be messy. I also love it because of the sun-lots of natural light all day!

annyroony2 02-25-2011 03:18 PM

Because its MINE. I can move things around today and move them back tomorrow if I want to. I can put something in there and know it is going to be there when I go back.

Kappy 02-25-2011 03:34 PM

"Because it's mine, all mine," she said as she rubbed her hand together with glee!

bjdemir 02-25-2011 04:16 PM

It's my room! I can walk away and shut the door in the middle of a project and noone can see the mess. Mine in small but works for me as I have another larger room adjacent where I have my cutting table.

echoemb 02-25-2011 04:38 PM

I love your cattle dog.. Proud owner of 3.

stchenfool 02-25-2011 04:43 PM

I love my room because it's me!

jitkaau 02-25-2011 04:52 PM

Special? My whole flat is my studio - quilting bed and machines in loungeroom, cottons and notions in corridor, cutting table and spinning wheel in bedroom, ironing board in bathroom/laundry...and I like it that way.

quiltwiz 02-25-2011 04:59 PM

My double-car garage size sewing room is very special to me because it contains all the things that I love....7 sewing machines, lots of fabric, sewing notions, threads, TV, computer, books, my filing cabinet and most loved of all, my Dh...he quilts too, and I love sharing with him.

fabricfairy 02-25-2011 05:41 PM

My DH is the same as yours with his building skills and it is so wonderful and supportive. I support his woodworking skills and love what he makes also. Win-win marriage.
:-D

It's all mine!!! and the grandkids are not allowed in there, nor is my husband unless I want him to do something. Right now it is rather crowded as I have my 10' quilt frame set up, will be moving it into my husbands room when he is able to move it.

biscuitqueen 02-25-2011 06:24 PM

Mine is a WIP, but it is mine, and everyone leaves me alone when I'm in there.

Divokittysmom 02-25-2011 06:26 PM

What makes my room special is.... it's mine, just mine! No sharing as a guest room. I can decorate as I like, I put an embroidered Sunbonnet Children Valance up that I created as I love Sunbonnets. I play my favorite music, and have my doll collection in there with me. Everything else is all my sewing paraphernalia and my 2 machines including my grandma's 1924 treadle. I totally LOVE my room! :-D

butterflies5518 02-25-2011 06:42 PM

After years of asking for a sewing room I have my own. Of course single now and kids all grown but still love calling it "My sewing room"!

jojosnana 02-25-2011 06:45 PM

I love having a whole closet to house my fabric. No one is allowed in the closet unless I am there to make sure the fabric for doll clothes or a little project aren't the $9+ fabric. You know what I mean. I have a cabinet that houses two of my singers and my Ott light. The cabinet is shut most of the summer when I am in the garden and open from cold weather till the end of cold weather. I have my computer in the room too. All of these things don't get moved unless I move them and that in itself is a pleasure. Of couse that also means if it is a mess, I did it!

sap 02-25-2011 06:53 PM

DH has his MAN cave, I have my WOMAN cave. nuf-said.

Berta48 02-25-2011 06:55 PM

Well my sewing room is in my laundry room.It is about 22x20 and I have 2 6ft tables beside one another with my sewing table and embroidery table placed one end of those .Then I have a six shelf wire rack and 9 or ten BIG commercial drawers full of fabric. My accuquilt Go is on the shelf in front of the window and the cupboards are storage for my thread and (a few plastic dishes etc)The double door closet is where I put my wall when needed. Dh put a floresant light above my sewing tables and there is also two windows and another ceiling light with afan above the 2 6ft tables. It is my space and I love going there and doing my thing!Plus I can get my laundry done all at the same time

Annz 02-25-2011 07:11 PM

Ms Elaine Va 02-25-2011 07:51 PM

I guess it is all mine, mess and all. I wish it had a door. At least I can do whatever I want in that room. I feel like it is my "girl cave".

Lucy90 02-25-2011 08:27 PM

I love my room (not done yet) because it is mine and I can have what ever I want in there and I can arrange it to my liking. I also have some antiques with the new and love it. I have enough storage and I store some fabric downstairs. All my projects I can see that are in containers. I love it!! I can leave stuff out and not worry about putting things away if I am having company. It is heaven!!

Mariposa 02-25-2011 08:56 PM

Because the room is mine! Not very big, but on main floor since I have fibro, makes life easier. Have 2 big south facing windows, and 2 east. Very quiet and peaceful. Good place for me to do my "therapy" crafts! :)

seamstome 02-25-2011 09:16 PM

I love the decor, all girlie girl. And everything is exactly the right height for me.

Now the other thing that makes it special is that it is the hottest room in the house. I keep the window open all winter long and if I sew in the summer I need to set the AC in the house at 60 to keep my room 78.

grammysharon 02-25-2011 09:32 PM

First I painted it deep turquoise, there are all kinds of things hanging on the walls that refer to quilting. Then all the bookcases filled with colorful fabric and books. I think my 4 year old granddaughter put it best. She said "Grammy it is a happy room"

penski 02-26-2011 12:09 AM

mine is special to me because it is "my" room and mine only i can upstairs to my sewing room and no one will bother me

gal288 02-26-2011 03:23 AM

The DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door. When I'm in the zone, everyone knows to find it themself, make their own lunch(or dinner sometimes), that Mom is not availlable!

It's the one place I can go to for peace & quiet, except for the machine noise, of course!

lclang 02-26-2011 06:04 AM

Because I can touch, smell, and see all that color and think about the possibilities. It's a place to dream and plan and enjoy.

But I always love to hear how some of you have made your quilting rooms like your personal sanctuary and a place you love to be. I was curious what some you have added to or have done to your rooms that make them such a special place?

First of all,is size, 15' x 20', a huge north picture window with lots of light and a resting spot for my eyes as I scope out the birds on the feeder outside the window, tv and tape player for those older ones and several Ott lamps for each machine. These old eyes don't see as well as they used to.
