You are so right! I went to a used bookstore yesterday and found some old quilting books and just had to buy them! I have so many books that I am working on putting them in order so I know what I have (yes I have duplicates, so will need to sell them)

JJs 09-18-2010 10:38 AM

My DH TAKES ME TO THE fabric store!
Goes with me to look at machines - loads them in the car after I get them...
Made his ownself a lapquilt!

I guess after 45 years (in Dec) we can do that!

CAJAMK 09-18-2010 10:40 AM

You have go to be kidding me! That is so wonderful...My DH does like me quilting so I am not after him squawking about "do this or that"!

Conniequilts 09-18-2010 10:43 AM

I am lol-ing at this question. I am happy to say that I have not had to sneak any quilting stuff in the house.

However, there are many other items in this house that came in while he was in the shower, out doing chores, at a car show, etc

Maybe we should be inquiring as to creativity to getting it in?? :)

Happy Quilting

Nothing. I guess we just have a very OPEN relationship. I don't hide anything from him because I wouldn't want him hiding stuff from me. He can look at the check book and see where money was spent, so why hide/lie about it?

Not trying to be a "debby downer" but...
I know its a different situation but the idea is the same... My cousin was dying of cancer, she knew she was no one else not even her husband and children did though. Anyways she spend all three kids college education, she took a loan against his 67 Mustang Shelby GT500, and she also took a second morgage out on thier house. Every time of this money was spent in a 6 month period at the casino. NO ONE knew she was EVER at the boat spending ANY money. Her kids now have no money for college, the car was repoed, and they almost lost the house. Thank god he makes REALLLLLLLY good money or everything would have been GONE!

The secret is the same, it just all depends on how far you would take it.

DebsShelties 09-18-2010 10:46 AM

I live alone, but have had to "hide" stuff in the closet when I have visitors from out of town who don't sew and think I have way too much. I found it easier to just have it out of sight then to try to explain every time they come to visit why I have over 200 yards of fabric, 3 sewing machines etc.

DebraK 09-18-2010 10:47 AM

lol, I don't live that way.

Oh he absolutely knows!!! 17 bins full with the possibilty of adding a couple more after this current acquisition!!  Seriously!! But dh went with me to get my 6600 (wanted his opinion on the mechanical aspect) and if I have to run to Jo's or a LQS he goes with me. Actually, I think he loves to give opinions on the color choices!! He loves that I quilt. One concern about the machine choice was are you still going to do handwork? :-D Old-fashioned Italian boy here!!

Chasing Hawk 09-18-2010 11:04 AM

I don't sneak anything in quilting or otherwise. My husband adds things to my stash, then makes cabinets and shelves to display my stash.

My hubby knows exactly how much is in my sewing room because we moved twice in two years. He doesn't really care.

kapatt 09-18-2010 11:11 AM

Yes, my husband does know how much fabric I have. He cuts the foam boards to wrap my fabric on so that I can store them neatly in the bins.

Both of us get a set amount that we can spend without explaining to the other one what we used it on. He uses his money on gun equipment and I use my money on sewing items. If I want something big, then I will save my money for a couple of months to buy that item. I don't use the household budget for buying my material. This all means that I am guilt free about what I buy and how much material I have stashed away.
We usually have Christmas presents as it's own special budget fund so....grin...I convinced him the other day that since some of my quilting items would be used for Christmas presents that I needed have a separate budget for sewng Christmas presents for the next couple of months. He agreed as long as it was temporary.

amandasgramma 09-18-2010 11:12 AM

My DH doesn't complain!!! I realize for everything I buy, HE buys something! LOL He also waits for me in the car when I go to the LQS.....AFTER we go shopping for magazines for him.

deema 09-18-2010 11:14 AM

I will buy fabric/notions without first talking to dh, but I never hide it from him. Why bother? He'd find out. Besides, he's totally on board with me making things for our house and gifts...takes the pressure off him to think about it! haha

QuiltedComforts 09-18-2010 11:23 AM

I have to sneak all fabric that I don't buy with my own money... luckily my DH works swing shift, so I go shopping in the am and I have time to hide it before he gets up, lol! He's very supportive of my quilting, but every once in a while money is tight until payday, but when I see nice flannel for $1.50 a yard, I just can't pass it up, lol!

champagnebubbles 09-18-2010 11:33 AM

Very open here too, so happy about it. I knew a woman at work who hide all kinds of stuff from her hubby. Her trunk and her office were full of stuff. Shoes, kids toys, she then would bring the stuff out at Christmas or birthdays. I never understood.

Luv Quilts and Cats 09-18-2010 11:36 AM

Being single, I don't have to hide anything. I don't think I would if I were married, though. I am sure he would have some hobby he would spend on and I wouldn't want him to think he would have to hide stuff from me.

I have never heard that term Debby DOwner.

I have a wonderful hubby too. He loves my work and knows I give more than I take and he understands. He just shakes his head when he knows I give so many quilt tops away for good causes. LOL. He also builds me shelves and things for my sewing room. ANd I have him making the Sewing machine lifters on here and he loves it. Sometimes, he automatically goes to the car to empty my trunk when we go somewhere. It is always full of some type of quilting items for classes, chairty etc. We gotta hang on to these men.

My hubby...

My hubby actually TOLD me to go to Hickory Stick in Hannibal (150 miles round trip) last weekend! He told me to get my motorcycle out and go. LOL I was good, I only spent $64, usually I spend over $100 when I go there.

He went with me to the big show in Paducah, and is going again next year. And we are going to Des Moines show in October.

We go to a lot of local shows. He knows the time that is put into quilts and really appreciates them. especially the hand sewn ones.

tjradj 09-18-2010 11:50 AM

I sneak nothing!! That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I'm single with a 10 year old son. So I answer only to me and my chequebook, mind you there are days when the chequebook wins!

amma 09-18-2010 12:53 PM

No one here to sneak anything past LOL

Maride 09-18-2010 01:00 PM

I am sure he doesn't know about everything, because he is not watching, but he is one to go out and buy a machine because I mentioned I liked it, or get me fabrics because he drove by the LQS. Nothing hidden here.

Sunflower Girl 09-18-2010 01:04 PM

You're not alone, I sneak it in all the time. I think he would croak if he ever saw how much stash I have!

IrishNY 09-18-2010 01:45 PM

I don't sneak anything in. I don't hide how much fabric I have but he doesn't look in my stash closet and probably has no idea. Hell would freeze over before he told me what to buy (or not buy). And I don't monitor his purchases.

I think it makes a difference that we have pretty equal salaries and we keep our finances separate. I pay college educations; he pays mortgage, insurance and utilities. We each pay our own credit card bills and share other major expenses. No fighting about money at our house. It works for us.

He set up my sewing room and helps me with my projects. So yes, he knows what I have. Unfortunately he can be an enabler too.

redvette54 09-18-2010 02:11 PM

I don't have to sneek anything in. Hubby says we both work hard and should be able to get what makes us happy. Last weekend I was showing him the Sew Mate table and asked if he could make me something like that. He said, he could but it wouldn't be as nice, just order it. Last night over dinner, he asked if I had ordered it yet. I told him, not yet and he asked what I was waiting for. He's a keeper

ptquilts 09-18-2010 02:38 PM

I agree with the "open relationship" people - why would you want to be in a marriage where one person lies to the other?

We have so many scraps,DH does not want to get rid of any!!

starlight 09-18-2010 04:04 PM

Never sneak anything in here. DH has his own hobby of woodworking so he knows that it costs money. He has so much "wood stash" that we had to put up another storage building. I don't mind cause when I want something made I pick out the wood. Everything works out for us.

dkabasketlady 09-18-2010 05:14 PM

My DH has been known to take me to LQS and ask me is this all you want? And pay for it too! He knows I have a ROOM full of fabric and he brings the boxes in from the mail when I order something online or from another member on this fabulous board. He does his thing(horse & dog track and lottery tickets) with "his" money and I do mine. I don't have to hide a thing in this marriage(it's my third and his second) and I won't live like that again. I've got a KEEPER after 27yrs.!!!

featherweight 09-18-2010 06:31 PM

I have never snuck anything into the house. He encourages me to buy what I want as life is to short to wish I had done this or wish I had done that. He is a lot more well behaved though. He doesn't buy to many things that are not a neccessity. Just his nature... After 49 and 1/2 years of being together He better not quit spoiling me. LOL

weatheread 09-18-2010 06:49 PM

I had to sneak in a new Janome 3160 a couple of weeks ago there are so many machines in my sewing room he hasn't noticed the new one yet

LOL

Unbelievable, did you hide it under your coat as you walked past him?

LAQUITA 09-18-2010 07:06 PM

My husband knows of my 'addiction'... to anything crafts!!! period!!! lol He blessed me and at Christmas last year her turned our 'sapre bedroom' into a craft room.
He pulled up all the carpet, laid hardwood floors down, let m e choose the paint color, and he bought 2 6 foot counter tops, and installed them on top of pre=made cabinets from Lowes. its great!

You have never seen Debbie Downer on Saturday Night Live?
A Debbie Downer is.... "someone who frequently adds bad news and negative feelings to a gathering, thus bringing down the mood of everyone around them."

Not trying to upset you with the name! Maybe I should have said Danni Downer!

littlehud 09-18-2010 07:09 PM

I have no DH just kids and they just add to the problem.

Beth33 09-18-2010 07:44 PM

I'm still single, but future husband would have no say in how I spend my money, and I won't tell him how to spend his.

That's the plan at least LOL

moonrise 09-18-2010 08:12 PM

I don't hide anything, and wouldn't want to live like that (sorry). DH brings home the bacon, but as long as bills are paid and there's food on the table, he doesn't care what I spend any extra money on. I should say "IF" there's any extra, these days! LOL! :?

I know someone who hid EVERYTHING from her husband. She ran up her own credit cards, then opened a bunch of cards in HIS name. I guess she signed his name on the applications; I don't know. She quickly found herself in over her head, and he finally learned about all the credit cards when they had to file bankruptcy. Bad thing is, he was willing to forgive her, but she left him shortly afterwards for another guy ... and quickly found herself in financial trouble again. And legal trouble for writing bad checks! I can't even imagine living like that.

So ... no secrets here! :-)

luvTooQuilt 09-18-2010 08:38 PM

My hubby knows.. Someone has to get them from the top shelf and put them back- Im too short and he seems to constantly remove my step ladder from my room..

I get teased that one day he will hear me scream for help from under an avalanche of fabric .. I say he might be right one of these days real soon..

I walked in today from an estate sale, he didn't even flinch. My SUV was filled with boxes. I spent $100 and got ALL the fabric they had.. 15+ boxes worth... I'm set for the next few years or so..

ChubbyBunny 09-18-2010 10:11 PM

I don't work outside the home. DH will occasionally give me money to purchase fabric and he voluntarily buys my machines after I sweet talk him. ;-) But I have to sneak in everything else. By everything else I mean fabric, books, patterns, notions.....you get the picture.

Rainy Day 09-18-2010 10:28 PM

I don't have to sneak fabric in, but wool is another matter. . . . he buys old bikes, new bikes, new bike gear, and I tease him about that.
