What Quilty Prize Would Make You Want to Buy a Raffle Ticket?

My guild does a fun prize patrol raffle at each business meeting. I get to do the shopping this year! :) Tickets are one for $1.00 and six for $5.00. Any money collected can be used to buy the items for the next month.

I was told to have four things at each raffle. I think the most I would want to spend on one item would be $30 (that's $60 at JoAnn Fabrics with a coupon).

I already have some specialty rulers, books, patterns, travel iron, and a bottle of Mary Ellen's Best Press.

What items would make you want to buy a raffle ticket?

KalamaQuilts 08-17-2014 10:13 AM

glasses http://www.keepsakequilting.com/productdetail/8871.htm
the 8" mat http://www.zoro.com/g/00123674/k-G45...FUPBoCEMLw_wcB

thread pack, piecing thread. Even four 2 packs would be nice..

little pack of these http://www.wawak.com/products/produc...FSERoCunXw_wcB

Double Wedding Ring would have me at the front of the line. I absolutely love them.

JENNR8R 08-17-2014 10:17 AM

Oooooo... those sound great! :) What brand of piecing thread would you want? I use Prescencia, but I don't think many people know that brand.

I'm confused... I know that there is a quilt pattern called a Double Wedding Ring. Are you talking about a pattern? Do you know of a specific one that you'd like?

Jeanne S 08-17-2014 10:31 AM

Large package of nice batting, a 5 pack of Olfa 45mm rotary replacement blades, a rotating cutting mat, and a combo set of Best Press and 505 Spray.

Cathy77 08-17-2014 11:05 AM

Is fabric allowed? Then maybe a fat quarter bundle or a layer cake or charm packs. Or maybe different quilting magazines.

I also think that Jeanne's ideas are spot on, especially the replacement blades (they're expensive but it's soooo nice when you get to cut with a new one! :p).

Tartan 08-17-2014 11:24 AM

Rotating cutting mat, the expensive spring loaded scissors for rag quilts, the large Twister ruler with the pattern book to go with it, Quilt in a Day scallop ruler and instruction book, a big package of Wonder Clips....

Onebyone 08-17-2014 12:29 PM

I like this idea. Does the winner get all four prizes or chooses one and a new one is added for the next raffle?

Weezy Rider 08-17-2014 12:49 PM

None of them. If I wanted it, I'd need it long before the raffle was held and buy it myself. I wouldn't be adverse to a donation and NO ticket.

CookyIN 08-17-2014 12:55 PM

Ott light. I don't think I'd ever buy one for myself, but if one was in a raffle... oh yeah! I think they're half price now at Joann and am pretty sure you can get one for $30.

The most expensive items I buy are cutting mats and rotary blades. So those things in a raffle would really make me take notice.

DogHouseMom 08-17-2014 01:04 PM

I like "sets" of related things :)

How about a "set" of rulers all of the same brand (Creative grids would be my choice) in a set of most used sizes (4.5" square, 6.5" square, 12.5" square, and an 6.5" X 24.5" rectangle).

A "set" of 12 or 15 different quilting stencils.

A "set" of various quilting papers including: Roll of golden threads paper, pack of paper piecing paper, pad of graph paper, and a roll of freezer paper.

There are four winners. The one that has her named drawn first, gets the first choice...

GrandmaNewt 08-17-2014 01:20 PM

I think a raffle is a great idea! There are so many quilty type items out there that I don't need, but would be fun to have or try out should I win one through an inexpensive raffle. There are also many quilty type items that I can never have enough of like rulers, spare rotary blades etc.

I love a lot of the ideas listed here including but not limited to clover clips, rotating cutting mat, spare blades, spring loaded scissors, rulers rulers rulers! Even things like thread sets or batting are good ideas, what a great way to try out brands that you normally don't buy.

To add to the list of ideas how about a gift certificate to a local quilting store, a magnetic bowl or nice pin cushion along with new quilting pins, storage racks for threads, bobbins or rulers and this last one may sound silly but I would love to win an assortment of different types and sizes of thread snips and seam rippers (my snips travel around my sewing room so I lose them, and It seems like my seam rippers get dull just when I need them most)

Nammie to 7 08-17-2014 01:22 PM

I think this is a great idea! Like all the suggestions that were made for the prizes. I think I'm going to suggest this at our next meeting! Thanks for the idea.

ManiacQuilter2 08-17-2014 01:22 PM

I agree with the Clover wonder clips and everyone can always use more new rotary blades.

This is how most of the older members feel in our guild about new ideas and spoils the fun of it.

Titanium sewing machine needles from Superior.
Specialty seam ripper.
Australian quilting magazine. (There are not carried everywhere and are often cherished by quilters.)
Fat eighths of hand-dyed fabric.

quilt938 08-17-2014 06:36 PM

I'm a sucker for the baskets that have various fat quarters or some kind of precuts and a pattern. there's a show coming up in sept and they usually have a bunch of baskets/bundles - we buy our tickets for the price mentioned then walk around and put them in the box for the prize we'd like to win - I usually pick out the ones wtih fabric - last time I won it was a basket with quilt patterned dish towels, quilty tshirt, and carpenters wheel wallhanging cutouts...haven't used the wallhanging kit (may add to my scraps LOL!) but used the dish towels. sometimes they do not-so-quilty like coffee or tea and a coffee cup or teacup wtih a quilt theme. I'll almost always get tickets for a bedsized quilt!

DOTTYMO 08-17-2014 10:55 PM

Ii would go for items we keep purchasing, rotary blades, pins, needles seam a seam, fabric markers etc. personally I prefer to buy my own fabric .

psychonurse 08-18-2014 03:55 AM

sewing related USB stick. or machine embroidery towel for those who do not have a Embroidery Machine, they can always use it as a gift for someone not in the guild.

Why? Not everyone likes free stuff or raffles. If you get a donation instead it's still making money which is the purpose of the raffle. It's great for those who like it. I'm fussy and would rather buy my own stuff. I'd give you a donation for a couple of tickets. I've won stuff (unwanted - never entered contest)that I've turned down or thrown away.

Sewnoma 08-18-2014 05:26 AM

I think I might also look for things that are a little more unusual. Like those red glasses for viewing values, or one of those books of color swatches. Or things that are quilting related but aren't actual quilt supplies; like a necklace with a quilt block pendant or earrings with little sewing machines; a folding hand-fan that is quilt themed; a mousepad with quilt print; a travel bag made with sewing themed fabric... things like that.

At my guild there's a raffle every other meeting of about 8 or 10 items (usually fabric but not always); they line up all the prizes with paper bags in front of each and you distribute your little clutch of tickets into whichever bag(s) go with the item(s) you are interested in. I like that because there is always some of the stuff I would not care for, but other things I would really like so I'm only entering my tickets for the things I'm actually interested in.

Lori S 08-18-2014 06:57 AM

A basket with tone on tone ( white on white or cream on cream ) fabrics would get me excited.

I like this idea! I hate it when I win something I don't want.

KalamaQuilts 08-18-2014 07:14 AM

to answer your question about What piecing thread, brands like you are using. I've spent the last two years using up all my coats and clarks (nothing wrong with it by the way) and would like some samples of something else.

Look at the Harbor Freight threads. That big hubcap magnet cracks me up.

Does the guild have a logo? Or a header for their website? You can get those printed on everything in the world

I understand someone not wanting to buy a raffle ticket but the older members in my guild talk negative if anyone is enjoying a program they don't care for or vote no to any idea that will cost a $1. They sure bring a negative feel to the meetings. The oldest keep saying this is not how we use to do it and gets the rest of the olders all puckered up about the changes. LOL. I told my DD if I get that mindset then it's time to say MOM, you are acting like an old biddy and no one likes it.

bearisgray 08-18-2014 08:23 AM

The idea that interested me most of the ones here -

that one can put one's raffle tickets in the bags in front of the items one is more interested in -

I would be willing to buy a chance on the largest quilting square ruler available - an OLFA 16.5 square ruler would be something I would like

I'm all for everyone having fun - the only time I'd really complain about a raffle is if you were required to buy a ticket for some reason. The other thing I'd complain about is a hair brained pyramid/Ponzi scheme to raise money.
I might not be interested or want to join in, but I do enjoy watching the others have fun. Some of the ladies get really excited and I'm happy for them.

WMUTeach 08-19-2014 03:28 AM

How about one of the sewing machine carrying cases that disguises itself as a suitcase on roller wheels. I would love one for traveling to retreats and quilt work days. Another idea would be be a small basket filled with those little items we use. How about a power cord. Not to glamorous but when I travel to quilt it is mandatory.

A new thought, how about a gift card to the best sewing machine repair shop so folks can get a machine "tune up". Oh, goodness, tune-up reminded me of music. A CD of calm but rhythmic music to play while you free motion quilt.

illinois 08-19-2014 03:43 AM

I rarely buy tickets for raffles as I seldom win anything and, if I do win, it's not something I really want/need. I liked the idea of putting tickets into the bags in front of things I might like. Most of us don't need more "stuff" unless we are beginning this addiction. The things we can actually use/consume would be more to my liking--yardage, batting, blades, patterns. Don't care for fat quarters as I'm always afraid I'll run out of the piece I have and then there I am without more. Why not just raise dues a few dollars? Guess not as much fun?

Onebyone 08-19-2014 04:05 AM

I talked to several of my guild members and they all were excited about trying this type of raffle. We will bring it up at our meeting which is today to start one!

maviskw 08-19-2014 04:23 AM

When you are older, you get rid of the "greed" feeling. I know when I was younger, I would grab up anything I could get my hands on. Didn't always use all of it.
Now, at my age, I'm downsizing. If someone comes to my house and says they like something, usually I can say, "It's yours." If someone breaks a glass, I can say, "More room in my cupboard." But I'll never live long enough to get rid of all the things I should.

The purpose of the raffle is not to raise any money. It's just a fun thing to do. Any money collected from the raffle this month enables me to buy the items for the next month's raffle. The cash never goes through the guild treasury.

ladydukes 08-19-2014 05:08 AM

I really like the pattern/book with templates of "Rings that Bind" by Cheryl Phillips.

ladydukes 08-19-2014 05:10 AM

Fat Quarters are always good too. One thing we've done in the past is the first person drawing gets to choose first, then the second, etc.

sewbizgirl 08-19-2014 05:11 AM

I also buy any tools I need. BUT... a trip paid to a quilting show (lodging, ticket to the show, workshops and market) would do it for me. I'd buy several raffle tickets....

Love your attitude, Mavis!

Onebyone 08-19-2014 05:42 AM

I'm the type that can open a drawer and dump it in the trash and not think a thing about it ever again. I have no stored items except in my sewing room. I've never had this much stuff to store then when I started quilting.

Walter'sMom 08-19-2014 05:53 AM

I think all the suggestions for the raffle are great. I am on the older side, but still get a kick out of a new notion or fabric. I am more into getting rid of my old stuff and acquiring some new stuff I guess. Our guild has lots of fun with raffles and door prizes. Good luck.
