I would complain to ebay and paypal. They should return your original machine and all of your money, plus shipping to ship back the machine they sent you. They should never have sent you a machine in that condition if it had been refurbished. It's hard to know who to trust, that's really tough with getting something fixed, same thing with cars.

Roberta, there is a guy in the Ossipee/Wakefield NH area that refurbishes vintage machines. He has oodles of them. Let me know if you want his name. He used to work at a local auction house and I might get it from them. Good luck.

Now to get to the problem and my need for advice. The machine didn't arrive when he said it would. After waiting a few days we contacted him via EBay since he has a "store" on there. A few days later I received an email from his son saying he had major heart surgery but his son would send out my machine. Ok thus far

Definetly file a complaint. The son may not even be telling the truth. PLEASE you have to look out after yourself. There are to many scammers out there. There is NOTHING wrong with you fileing a complaint! Please keep us up to date!!

When the machine arrived it doesn't work. The wires going into the machine are bare, one isn't even attached to the machine, etc. I paid him $135 to refurbish this machine plus shipping and I got back a machine that can't be used. I paid through my PayPal account but this was a month or so ago since I was waiting for him to respond to my numerous phone calls and emails.

I feel guilty compaining to PayPal about this transaction since I know he has been ill and may not even be with us but I also can't afford to throw away $135 on a machine that doesn't work.

My question, sorry this was so long, what would you do.

File a complaint to E Bay and Pay Pal.

Keep sending the father messages through e-bay, not your personal e-mail. Keep it up until you hear from him. Also, file with Paypal and E-bay. Call Paypal. They handled my problem a few months back very well. Come to find out, I was the last person my seller dealt with before leaving for Alasks for a month. He thought all was good. Of course, after about 28 days I filed a Negative on his site. When he came back, he handled eveything with utmost professionalism. I received all monies back including my postage to him for broken machine. Keep pushing forward with this.

I prefer to deal with real people I can talk to face to face, and keep the business right in my home town. A $75 - $100 repair charge is nothing when you look at the price of a new machine of comparable quality. I prefer to keep my $$ in my home community economy.
I can't justify a new Viking machine right now, but I visit the local dealer/quiltshop frequently, and buy supplies/notions. I also attend seminars to learn about the latest trends, tips & tricks and how to get more out of my sewing without trashing the machines I own. They know me by name and always act like they are happy to see me, even if I'm not buying a new $9000.00 machine today.
Meanwhile, immediately persue a solution through pay-pal and E-Bay. You might get your money and your machine back. Hopefully you have learned a lesson. Good luck.

I agree!!!!! No repairmen in Maine??? My friend lives there and has no problem finding one!!

There are no repair men who work on OLD Singer machines. We have two shops in our area but neither do so I sent it to someone I had bought from before.

If you have a friend in Maine in the central location that has a good repair person, could you pm me with the name of the person because I could use it. I have sent my Janome to the shop where I bought it for yearly service but again, he didn't work on old Singers.

If Roberta didn't purchase the service of her old singer through Ebay then Ebay can't do anything as it's not their problem. If I've read this correctly Roberta contacted this man on his personal website or privately asking for his help with servicing the machine. Any agreements made between them is just that... between them. Ebay has nothing to do with that and one cannot file a complaint on a non-related Ebay purchase. Paypal may be a different situation although I am unsure if the same rules apply to Ebay/Paypal versus just Paypal itself?

I realize this is an unfortunate situation but am also absolutely amazed at "this man is horrible" band wagon most people have jumped on before truly knowing what all the facts of the situation are. Astonishing that reading here quilters talk of being a special caring breed yet as displayed here the killer instinct is alive and well.

That's a distance from us but I'm very familiar with the area because we used to live in Acton, ME which was right on the border on NH. I would like his name and phone for future reference since I have another machine that I will need serviced. Thanks so much.

I didn't take any of the advice as people having a "killer instinct". I think most are just trying to be helpful and I appreciated their advice.

I do agree that I can't contact EBay on this matter even though he does still advertise his service on their site. I contacted him directly so EBay is off the hook.

I hate to think I stirred up any anger on this board over this because it wasn't my intention. I think everyone, well almost everyone, on the board is just wonderful and very helpful and I've learned so much from them and thank you all.
