Start with wall hangings/lap quilts. Don't give up even if it seems your are ripping more than sewing. Pin and baste like crazy!! Walking feet make the difference.

If possible take a quilt class from a local quilter or LQS. Learn from another quilter how to make the choices of value, not color for your contrasts to really work in the pattern. Simple designs can be stunning when done with bold colors with great contrasts.

lOTS OF GREAT ADVICE HERE, MINE IS MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING A SCANT 1/4 INCH SEAM AND HANG IN THERE, IT GETS EASIER WITH EACH BLOCK!:)

Measure twice, cut once. Keep it easy. Sew a 1/4 seam accurately. Relax and Enjoy

I am a newbie, I have no teachers or union, so I can go only to what I like.
Do only what you pleasure and enjoyment to the final result!
The best advice I heard: Measure 2 times and cut only 1!
And a mistake I made about fabrics and would like someone else to take note of what you should do: If you like to buy more quantity and less variety!

Pay attention to all the rules at first to understand the reasons behind them (often there are none) and then discard the ones you decide unnecessary.

Cut accurately should never be discarded

Make something simple just using one cut, like a four or nine patch squares. Buy extra material because you will make cutting mistakes. You can always save the extra material for a scrappy quilt or other projects. Re-check your cut pieces to make sure they are correct before sewing the block, then after. Buy a self healing mat(mine is 18 x 24 inch) and rotary cutter as these are your best friends. I use a 6 1/2 inch x 24 inch clear acrylic ruler with black print, The yellow ones have too much yellow for me to see good. A 12 inch square for squaring up blocks helps a lot. Use a new sewing machine needle(if starting a quilt, when you hear the clonking of the needle, then change needle again) and use the right thread.
