I was just thinking that it would be a great topic for everyone to give a tip. Mine would be: Start off on a small project. Wall hanging or baby quilt would be good. 2. Clip threads as you go because it is a pain in the backside to wait until the end. 3. Quality fabric and supplies can be found in many places. Don't let anyone convince you that quality can only be had at the LQS. 4. You don't need a fancy pants machine to make beautiful quilts (although they are fun toys to have). Our pioneer foremothers made beautiful quilts with nothing more than needles and/or treadle machines. Only buy a fancy machine if you really want one. 5. Don't let the weird stares bother you when you are studying the tile pattern on the floor in the public restroom for inspiration. And, most importantly, 6. Don't let anyone make you feel inferior because you are just starting on your quilting journey. Your artistic vision is just as valid as theirs. |
Learn the basics..but don't get hung up on tradition..think for yourself and be creative..anything you sandwhich and put together (3 layers) is a quilt !! Be proud of your work..HAVE FUN !!!

do your best but don't be over critical of your work, practice, practice, practice. with each piece you do, your skills will improve - enjoy what you do - don't stress yourself

Wow! This speaks to the rebel in me! I'm a newbie quilter and ready to try my wings!

My tip is not to get discouraged. We do the best we can and if it not's perfect then its made with love. Try to get with encouraging people. Do patterns you like with colors you love. Happy quiltling!

Always take the time to press your seams.
|
Make sure you have a good mentor to go to when something just doesn't work right - and measure twice before cutting once!!! Haven't we all forgotten that one at least once!!!!
|
I would say don't give up and keep on trying.

Keep working...The more projects and techniques, the better. You learn something with every quilt, large or small.
