I have to clean my sewing area today and tomorrow as two of our children are coming to visit and would probably like to sit at the table (where I sew.) I looked at "my stash". When I watch photos of your stashes, I see nicely folded fabrics lined up in a row. I don't have nice pieces like that. Most of my "stash" is made up of remnants of other projects, some jellyrolls, fat quarters I picked up and a couple of charms. I have lots of 2 1/2 leftover strips or squares organized by color in plastic boxes from something else. Is that my stash? I guess I am deprived! I don't spend as much money as some of you do, but buy my share of fabrics usually for a quilt I have in mind. Am I alone in that?

Jim's Gem 08-03-2010 05:01 PM

Probably not. I have a substantial stash (much to my husbands chagrin) It is all neatly folded and tucked away (most of the time)
I love being able to shop from my sewing room for my next project!

Butterfly garden 08-03-2010 05:05 PM

For many, many years, my stash was one small box of scraps. Now I have three boxes of fabric and two small boxes of scraps. That is not a huge stash, but I have manufacturered two quilts out of it recently without making any other purchases.

bejay28 08-03-2010 05:08 PM

LOL....I don't have near as much as most of the stashes I have seen on here! I do have my share, mostly for what I am working on, or plan to work on.

grammyp 08-03-2010 05:13 PM

Mine is somewhere in the middle. I have a nice collection of yardage, but LOTS of remnants. I have plastic drawers with "foods", 2.5 inch strips, misc size strips, squares of various sizes, WIPs, I'spy squares, and HSTs of various sizes. Then I have boxes under my cutting table filled with little pieces cut off as I work. From time to time I go through them and sort into the drawers.

miss_ticky2 08-03-2010 05:18 PM

I don't have much at all..mainly because I've only started quilting in recent times. I will probably tend to get things as I need for a project in mind. Mind you..I have a few extra little pieces (about 6..lol) that I have no idea yet what I'm going to do.

sharon b 08-03-2010 05:18 PM

Mine is not as big as some, but I have more then I will probably ever use

I buy what I like and figure it out later  LOL

franie 08-03-2010 05:20 PM

One with the biggest stash wins! What? I have no clue! I know I will never use all I have but I give it a good try.

pocoellie 08-03-2010 05:20 PM

I have 5 (65 qt) plastic totes filled with just scraps, 2 large drawers filled with already cut squares and strips, plus a whole ton of yardage, ruler folded in drawers and another 18-20 (65 qt) plastic totes filled with yardage. I am trying to not shop for fabric. LOL

pstoner 08-03-2010 05:50 PM

most of my "stash" is projects that I am going to start, or left over pieces from previous projects. I have one drawer that I put my "cutoff's" into but that's the extent of my stash. Oops. this just posted twice, sorry don't know how this happened

My stash is buying kits I like when they are on sale. I love collecting batiks. I also love to buy a pattern I really like then I'll see the fabric I love to make that pattern and not really having enough time to use all this fabric, so I keep collecting. I like to justify my stash collecting while I am still working full time so that one day when my income is less I will have enough fabric and patterns to keep me happy for a while. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

wvdek 08-03-2010 06:22 PM

IMHO, your stash is any fabric you have in your posession whether scraps or whole pieces, whether a small shoe box or a roomful.

mom-6 08-03-2010 06:59 PM

I've been collecting fabric for at least 10 years, plus people know I do all sorts of crafts (or have in the past) so I've been given other people's stashes as well...You know like "hey this was in my mom's closet when we were cleaning out the house to sell it, I thought you might be able to use it"...as they give me a big box of fabric or yarn or WIPs. Still don't have nearly as much as some I've seen on here though!

A lot of my stash was acquired that way too. And I save scraps, so I have a lot of those.

I can be at your house anytime lol

Annaquilts 08-03-2010 07:31 PM

I am definitely not like you. My stashing capabilities are increasing by the year. I do have a quilter friend that has a tiny stash that she keeps in the night stand in her guest bedroom and it is not even full. LOL Mine doesn't even fit in a dresser.

jazzy519 08-03-2010 07:42 PM

Lol mine is stashed through out my house. My DH could have a heck of a yard sale if something happened to me.

KellyPA 08-03-2010 07:55 PM

I don't have much either. I have some pieces from my teen years that I purchased while visiting Lancaster (which is actually where I live now), scraps from projects, and pieces I have picked up at yard sales. I'm ALWAYs impressed with the beautiful fabric "stash" pictures, but I am thankful for what I have and maybe one day I will move in with one of them ;-)

C.Cal Quilt Girl 08-03-2010 08:06 PM

Anything left over or in waiting, I probibly have less than others more than some.

Could be called stach, stuffed, poked, crammed, hid or hiding, omg forgot about that, and really like, must get some of that !! :)

Mariposa 08-03-2010 08:10 PM

I agree with CC Quilt Girl! :)

kwiltkrazy 08-03-2010 08:19 PM

I have a pretty extensive stash. I inherited it from my Grandma when she died, and also from my sister when she decided she didn't like quilting. I also got 11 boxes of scraps from a friend that decided she was never going to use scraps again. so I do have a large stash.

0tis 08-03-2010 09:07 PM

I am pretty new to this - but I have yardage in a couple of tubs - try to keep it neat but usually gets all mixed up when I dig through it. I have some smaller pieces and I was throwing away all of my scraps but I am trying to keep some of them now. So I am new to the game but I do have a sufficient supply of yardage that I won't be bored if I get snowed in this winter....

This is most like me. Stash is anything that isn't nailed down and can be sewn together. :D

Without going into "how much" I have (because it's irrelevant) I like to keep my eyes peeled for things that speak to me, that make my heart leap, that might not necessarily be a "new" line but is new to me. And I like to have at least a few fabrics that go together so I'm not stuck with a yard of "what do I do with this?"

The goal in quilting is not to keep up with the Jones's, but to be satisfied with what works for you. If you like to have folded fabrics all in a row, have at it! If you like to use up virtually every scrap before you buy more, that's great too! :D

mygirl66 08-04-2010 04:19 AM

Alot of my stash is clothes that are going to be recycled.I also hit alot of thrift stores on deal days (the 2nd Tues of the month, you can get 5 pc for $5.00). Your stash does not have to come from a fabric store. I also hit alot of garage sales and pick up the cutest tops for .25 that are cotton, and would look beautiful in a quilt!

pocoellie 08-04-2010 04:24 AM

Dix-anytime you're in the area, feel free to come by.

mlaceruby 08-04-2010 04:30 AM

Well I admit my stash is HUGE!
But if I didn't do quilts and kits for others it would be smaller. As I buy alot of what a customer wants not maybe what I would use if the quilt were for me.
Every stash is precious!

dotcomdtcm 08-04-2010 04:49 AM

I have about 6 shelves in a cabinet and a laundry basket of scraps. I sort by theme, kids, holiday, NYC, batiks, floral, etc. The other thing I have which I highly recommend is our "art shelf". Over the years I have collected beads, buttons, floss, ribbons, decoupage scraps, glitter, doll hair, felt, buttons, each in a plastic shoe box. My Mom was great at picking up odds and ends at the flea market. I use the stuff all the time!

mrspete 08-04-2010 05:08 AM

I pick up little scraps......I mean just scraps from different people who are tired of moving them from place to place or just tired of looking at it. Odds and ends, really. I am to the place that the quart size ziplocks can't be zipped and I need to either find larger containers or something. I've seperated the flannel pieces and the novelty pieces with glitter. And the solids, not enough to make different bags. So I've taken ziplocks and laid them on the floor and started with a hand full walking by and dropping the color for that pile on the bag and it looks almost organized, again. But, for the larger pieces, like to fold, it takes forever and a day. they get quick fold and left on the ironing board and I make myself do a stack each time I am in the utility room. I almost have an organized 'stash'. Almost means, with drawers for the larger folded, no color or design just folded out of sight. I still have stacks of it. Times get hard again, I can sew to my content. I call it lap top sewing because I don't have room to spread out. You who have room are so blessed. I'm still happy as a pig in mud.

Blessings,
Ruth

Your stash is where ever you can shop at midnight when you can't sleep and a quilt is floating around in your head. Some are able to keep their stash in their computer with a plastic card nearby, but me I have to have my stash in totes in my sewing room.

weezie 08-04-2010 07:33 PM

Gosh no, you're not alone. I don't have a large stash, but it's one that I've been accumulating for many years. I am a bargain hunter and a mood shopper; when I see fabric that I really like, is excellent quality, at an excellent price, I buy it and it goes into the stash. When I see a quilt pattern I want to make, I can often get all the fabric I require off my own shelves.

littlehud 08-04-2010 07:45 PM

Don't worry. Your stash will continue to grow. Just keep buying fabric for future quilts. It's not the size anyway. Yours is a stash. Mine isn't that big either.

stefanib123 08-04-2010 07:47 PM

My husband was laughing at me today. My father in law was throwing out 2 of those big 65 quart rubbermaid tubs, and I got them "for my fabric". He was laughing because I couldn't even fill half a tub! LOL!

But, the last laughs on him! I have a smaller one already full in the closet, and I have been buying here and there on ebay, with plans to get more, LOl.

At the rate I'm going, I will have them full in no time!

AnnaK 08-04-2010 08:23 PM

Gilla, don't feel bad that you don't have a stash like some of the others here. Many just buy the fabric they need for the next quilt. I don't have the room to have a huge stash and would like to discipline myself to not buy unless I have a project in mind. What's happened with some of the fabric I've bought is that I am no longer 'in love' with it, then you're stuck having spent that money that you won't see again. So, there is nothing wrong with just buying what you need. To each his/her own.

nana myra 08-05-2010 03:24 AM

I am with you, I buy as I need for projects. I also have lots of left overs. Never even sure how to separate,:color, sizes, print, etc.??? But it sure is fun, love to just look at the bits I have. The thrift stores or yard sales are good places to pick a little here and there.

Peggy 08-05-2010 04:31 AM

I am fortunate to have a large stash of fabric collected since the late 1980s. It is stored in a closet in my sewing room and grows since I never seem to have all that I need for any project and have to buy more! I need a larger closet! BTW this does not include the 9 plastic containers under my sewing table! I do not "browse" in fabric shops much anymore, tho, which helps.

MommaThomps 08-05-2010 04:40 AM

That's the same for me. It's a lot of material leftover from previous projects or projects I plan to do in the future. I need to do a scrappy quilt one of these days.

nana2 08-05-2010 04:44 AM

Hello fellow Texan!!! LOL My stash consists of fabrics that I have had for a lot of years and fabrics that I have been given by friends and family over the years. It has grown to more than I would have ever imagined. I have never been able to throw away any scraps left from any kind of project. Recently I organized all of these so that my grand daughter and I would be able to see them easily and now do not plan to buy anything unless it is needed as a blending fabric in a specific project. Today I will be getting myself and GD started on a project to use a lot of the scraps. There is a tute here showing the use of adding machine tape (3") a sort of paper piecing. Various sized strips are sewn "across" the tape making a "roll" of striped pieced fabrics to use in other projects. I thought this was a great way to get scraps ready for using in future project.

mpspeedy 08-05-2010 04:53 AM

I have a largae stash of fabric even several full bolts of basic stuff like black, white, red etc. I make a lot of Linus quilts so that is a good excuse to constantly pick up bargins. I also have fabric and materials for heirloom sewing, a big tub of yardage suitable for backing. When I had a number of handquilting commissions I used to pick up yardage whenever I got a good price. I also have lots of speciality things like trims, stabilizers, cording, handkerchiefs etc. etc. I have a huge stash of thread for sewing, quilting, serging and embroidery as well as several thousand dollars worth of embroidery software etc. Lets not forget the rulers, stencils, markers, mats, cutters and all the other gadgets etc. needed for creative sewing.

mar32428 08-05-2010 04:58 AM

The older you get, the more stash you build. Organized? What's that?
