I use parchment paper to trace FMQ patterns on and then stitch through it and tear it away. It is more sturdy than tissue paper (like you use in gift wrapping) yet you can see through it to trace pattern. I work in small sections of the the quilt so the whole quilt isn't covered in it. Just use safety pins to pin it in place. I use Frixon pens to trace so that way if any ink transfers to the thread as I sew it will come out easily.
Freezer paper I use for applique patterns. |
Chocolate! Great for inspiratioin, calmning me down if having problems with a pattern, boost of energy or just because I like it!

There are some things which to me are just standards- mat, rotary cutter, 6x24 ruler, scissors, seam ripper, iron
If one breaks or wears out, I would have to buy another. Other than my 6x24, I use the Tucker Trimmer ruler a lot. I would replace it. I have this magnetic holder for pins which saves me time and blood ( I use it to find stray pins.) Prevents the poke and find method. I have many other rulers and other gadgets, but I'm not sure I will replace them if they break or wear out. |
Other than the basics (cutter, mat, etc.), I use my QID 6" Half Square Triangle Square Up ruler all the time.

I love mine also - also like the seam ripper with rubberized end (don't remember the brand) for taking out those pesky little threads after ripping. Got mine at my local quilting store.

My thread snips used to be my favorite tool, but I have a new favorite tool, the Martelli 45 mm rotary cutter I bought last month. I love, love, love that rotary cutter. The blade is super sharp and it's fun to use. Makes me want to cut all my stash up. hehehehe

The Internet... I learn from it and find resources constantly. The Internet has been my best quilting instructor.
