I think it's a regional thing. Mom called it material, now I call it fabric.
|
To me it is old-fashioned but it is so history! What we know without history being told to us!!
|
when I first started here and sometimes still I called it material; I had to make a cautious effort to call it fabric just to fit in
|
When I was a kid it was material and now it is fabric. My grandmother called it cloth. Is it soda or pop? Depends on what part of the country you live in.

I can remember when it was mainly called material, and when some people called it cloth, but it has been called "fabric" in more recent times. I don't know when it changed,or why.

My mother always called it material but when I came south they
called it fabric. |
I've also heard it called "piece goods." What we called "outing", short for outing flannel, is now "flannel." And we wore thongs on our feet; "Here comes Peter Cottontale" line--"things to make your Easter bright and gay." LOL!
