At home and in high school we called it material. Then in college it was fabric. I think fabric stuck with me, but I do use material occasionally.

It's like the difference between "movie" and "film", one is more "artsy-farty" than the other.

It's all clothe.

We called it material too. I don't buy the explanation that fabric is more specific. Fabric is just structured substance.

Another old word for it was "stuff"

Maybe the lesson is that whatever it is called, that word soon gets applied to a much broader selection of, em, material?

Back in the day we always referred to cloth as material. Now that I quilt, it's called fabric. I think it's partially the times we live in, & the region we live in also.

Same here but I never even thought about it until now.

Ditto.

Is that anything like:
Couch
Sofa
Davenport
Divan

I think perhaps it has something to do with the area you were raised and the term that was used by your mentors/teachers, etc.
Cotton by any other name is still "Cotton"
