I made a "leg belt" for a wheelchair bound coworker. When I started in the lab, Joey used a piece of braided rope to hold his legs together. I got to work and made an adjustable denim/homespun thingy for his legs. It took some tweeking but we got it to fit and the velcro fastener was just the ticket!

A sail for my DH's cedar strip hand made Kayak and Canoe he made. Was definately an experience. Also have made "shade drops for the awnings on our travel trailer and now for our motor home. ( the sort of fabric they use for umbrellas that let the air thru but offer some privacy) I'm sure that over the years there have been a lot more strange things that I have made, but these two items come to mind first.

dog boots for my DIL chichaua (sp?). It was so funny to watch him walk at first, he finally got use to them. His feet were sticking to the ice in winter so they were a needed item. I used my little finger as the goal to make sure they would fit him without hurting him and to make sure if I couldn't shake it off, he wouldn't be able to either. He's so tiny.

A quilted holder for MIL's oxygen tank. I used pretty pre-quilted fabric from Walmart. It had straps to hold it or attach it to a walker, etc., and a little pocket to hold the tool used to adjust the on/off switch. This was several years ago before those portable tanks became so popular.

I made a special 'nursery' bag for a sugar glider. Had no idea what it was, so went onto the net, and discovered I had to put the seams on the outside, extra small stitches, etc, so the little one wouldn't get hung up in any bits of thread in the seam. Turned out well & the person I made it for (my hairdresser) was able to keep her 'baby' with her during the day (if only doing haircuts - no perms). They bond with their human by scent and spending time together.

Clarice29 11-10-2011 06:51 AM

I made a spare tire cover once out of naugerhide and appliqued a stag's head on it and another ith checkadees and pine branches. They were fun and unusual.

I was actually given a pattern for the scrub hat from a nurse at the hospital. I make the all the time for the department my husband works in.

It is still very hard to write about my awesome quilting experience. When my granddaughter lost her two month old to SIDS she asked me to make a wall hanging with his name and his clothing. Well, what could I do? She mailed me his clothes and I prayed and proceeded to make a wall hanging and sofa size quilt. When I visited this summer her husband took me downstairs to their den and showed me the wall hanging and the quilt draped on the sofa. For them, it's a wonderful way to remember him. I don't know where I got the spiritual courage to do it and, Lord, I pray I never have to do it again. God bless, Quilting Joan

Well, I guess you can call me a bit crazy, but I am making a kitten bed, (Log cabin & quilted on my antique Singer 31-15 commercial machine also I am recovering an auction find (ottoman), also using the Log Cabin pattern, with double rows of prairie points & welting. When I am finished and can figure out how to post the photos, I will. Yep, I am crazy!

I made a skunk costume for my granddaughter who was 18 months old. I used about 12 different kinds of fabric/craft items and it turned out fantastic. We still howl when we see her in the costume. She did not like it at all. The only part of her body that you could see was part of her face, the rest of the costume completely covered her, it was great for the cold weather.

Oh, I came here with my answer, but I see most so far are serious answers.

I did crochet some gag gifts a few years back--------but I'll just go on my way and laugh to myself.

The most unusual thing I ever made

The most unusual thing I have ever made was a sea scape picture made out of dryer lint for my laundry room. My husband thought I was perhaps a bored housewife. He just does'nt understand the need to create in us creative types.

My children were involved in Little Theater for the play, "The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe".The Lion 's costumer bowed out, & the director came to me, asking for help. I made the costume, but couldn't figure out how to do the mane. Finally, I used paper ribbon, curled, & sewn in place all over the head piece. He had a very "fuzzy" head, indeed!

DH's Halloween Costumes. From the slinky dress of St. Pauli girl, to the wings of the MSN Butterfly, to Cupid's Quiver, to Ernie the Keebler Elf hat and bag. Here is a man who is very secure in his manhood.

Weirdest thing I have ever made was brown suede drapes for the Pig Barn at the Fort Worth Stockyards.
The buildings are now being used for alternative uses, and there was to be a wedding held in what was once the pig barn, so the wedding co-ordinator asked if I could make these drapes.

sherian 11-10-2011 03:33 PM

I made a volcano pillow for my grandson with lava flowwing. He drew it and I made it.

redmadder 11-10-2011 03:57 PM

I forgot about the parade costumes. I had to hire seamtresses to get them done on time. The local VFW, 40 strong, marched in the parade dressed as Revolutionary War troops. We made them authentic costumes and they won the Grand Prize. In spite of those sunglasses. It was kind of fun measuring all those inseams.

sammy89 11-10-2011 04:42 PM

a reindeer costume for daughters x mas play the pattern was as ugly as could be but i changed it a bit so it was cute

tweezy50 11-10-2011 04:43 PM

I made eye patches for my dgd. She had to wear an eye patch for her lazy eye for several hours every evening. Her mother had a hard time getting her to wear them. Always a fuss and fight to get there. I took one of the plain black patches she had bben given by the doctor and studied it and came up with patches in her favorite colors and charcters. No problem after that. She thought she was quite special when she wore them. Mama thanked me for helping.

DonnaQuilts 11-10-2011 05:04 PM

I made enough "jockey silks" for the race track to pay for my first Janome. Also made some "saddle towels" or the colored saddle blankets used to breeze the horses in the morning to identify the horse and trainer for the track officials. the jockeys like the body suit shirts with snaps at the crotch as they don't have loose shirt tails in the home stretch.

"Cat in the Hat" hat to put on a motorcycle helmet for a Christmas parade. DH was the "Cat" and needed his hat. It stayed on the whole parade. Also adapted Santa Hats to fit on helmets.

Have made Ninja turtle costumes complete with the shells for their back, bats with huge wingspans, red devils, gingham cats and others I can't recall.

Vicki W 11-10-2011 05:19 PM

I made Bob and Larry costumes for my DD and DSIL. (Bob and Larry from Veggie Tales) I have made costumes through the years for my DDs. And I did some really strange stuff when I worked for a flower shop years ago.

sammy89 11-10-2011 05:30 PM

My daughter works in hospital also. Some of the scrubs tech were wearing some and because they not sterile they told the workers not to wear them anymore.

once again, I repeat, the hats for the operating room nurses and scrub techs do NOT need to be sterile. Only the things that touch the patient, (unless they lay their head in the wound. . .). I am CNOR (Certified Nurse of the Operating Room), and I've made over 2500 hats in 3 different states!

The most unusual thing I've made recently was a carrier for a dutch oven - the kind that goes in the fire or coals. It had to be somthing that wouldn't burn, sturdy enough to carry, etc. They worked out really well.

CircleSquare 11-10-2011 06:27 PM

I made a padded twin fitted sheet to take to camp. It is sort-of a combination of a fitted sheet and a mattress pad.

ssuzz 11-10-2011 08:04 PM

awning for my shop
leather chaps
ear muff covers

Wonnie 11-11-2011 05:09 AM

My son is a drywall finisher and painter. Made him a heavy canvas caddy with many, many different sized pockets with velcroed (is that a word???....well, it is now!) pocket flaps to hold his many tools that could be mounted on his scaffolding.

PAQUILTS 11-11-2011 05:31 AM

Back in the early 70's I was asked to make a sweeper cover w/ dress and hat that was a cow and add legs to it so she could set it on a bench in her hallway and be able to pull the dress knee high and cross it's legs. Turned out kinda cute, and then she wanted a crow done the same way.

I made a fabric coconut tree 8' tall. It had a 2"x 2" upright on a stand wrapped with batting and covered with brown duck fabric. The leaves were wide with a channel in the middle for #9 wire which gave them their "drape." The wire fit into holes drilled at the top of the 2 x 2. The tree decorated a corner of our family room as an accent piece with our Peace Corps Philippines mementos.

missy miss 11-11-2011 06:05 AM

I made a palm tree that was 6 ft tall and put stuffed monkeys in it. Oh and some coconuts.

I have a friend who had a lump on her breast removed and she was always so COLD!! I crocheted what I called a 'booby hatch'.......a round, breast shaped cup and put a crocheted cord on it so it could be worn around the neck and held in place. It was sort of a joke to begin with but she found it really worked and wore it a lot until not needing it any longer

GlitzyMe 11-11-2011 06:40 AM

A quilted 'holster' for my massage therapist's lotion bottle. They wear them around the waist.

Just curious how hard it was to recover your pool table. I need to do the same thing.

Caulking bags, and my oldest son requested a purple long fur suit, (pants and a pull over top) and he did wear it! lol

funny stuff

I have made some funny stuff.
I made a tuxedo for a 3-month-old baby for my husband's cousin to take her baby to Senior Prom as her DATE I based it on a onesie sleeper and matched her dress with the cumberbund and tie. It was adorable and he was the HIT of the Prom but the principle was NOT amused.I have a picture somewhere, but how to download it? I need a genius.
Then I made my son an Indian headdress and breastplate for a contest. He won first place and then ate most his costume, since it was mostly dyed bread. Again, a genuis to download.
When my husband retired from the Navy and went to work for the Feds, I made him some ridiculous ties. There were several different camouflage ties, the Groucho Marx nose/mustache tie, the flannel baby animals tie, the Mexican flag tie, "just say NO" tie, Frogs, French love letters tie, pieced/quilted ties, a tie with his baby picture printed on the fabric. He was a hit!
My favorite, I made a cake hat for a hat constest, and won first place. It was based on a small basket with a cardboard brim, and was mostly plaster-of-Paris over the base with cake frosting over it and candles burning on my head. My daughter-in-law was behind me with a fire extinquisher. I DO have a picture of that online and will try to download it later.

"A Cross-eyed Bear" I have a dear friend, who as a child, remembered singing a church hymn which included the words, "cross I bear". She couldn't understand why they sang a song in church about a cross-eyed bear. Later in life, as she developed struggles & trials in life, especially those relating to health, she called them her "cross-eyed bears". She had a sweet sense of humor! One year for her birthday, I bought a teddy bear, dressed it in ruffly hat & skirt, & repainted it's eyes. It was indeed, her crossed eyed bear, & she loved it. Helped her to keep the right perspective & still helps me.

I made a bag for my alto recorder, it has 3 sections and the top of each section is closed with velcro.
