Like many others here, I've made some costumes. But I've got pictures of some of them. First is me in my "magic" vest - I perform magic shows at children's birthday parties. Next is the most difficult thing I've ever made - a suit out of velvet. And a shirt for when I'm out of the suit.

Wed made a bar out of my Dad's boat for our GD wedding. It was a row boat we out a sail on it and I attached flowers to chicken wire and edged the boat with it. They filled it with ice and 2 beer kegs, wine, soda, water etc. It was out door really a fun piece at the wedding.

I made a knitted uterus, placenta and umbilical cord to use in my childbirth classes.

does a tote bag for jumper cables count as unusual?

BJenkins 11-11-2011 04:09 PM

A Yertle the Turtle costume for my grandson.

I have a bass ukelele that my stepmom gave me after my dad died. I also had quilt blocks from just fooling around with new patterns (not planning to make a quilt yet). So I made a quilted case with a pocket for the tuning thingy and a couple of picks. I bet your DIL loves the scrub hats...for $25 dollars each... I could get use to whipping those things out.

A soft sided guitar case for a used small guitar complete with pockets for extra strings and over the shoulder carrying strap.

I had to repair a cow pillow (had a head that was 3D), was pretty difficult as I remember.

Six years ago, I fell and broke my left wrist rather badly, but the surgeon put in a plate and 8 screws in it and I was able to get back to my quilting pretty quickly. SO, I took the hard copies of the Xrays that he gave me and printed them on fabric and quilted him a wall hanging. I told him because of what HE did, I could get back to what I do. He said he had never received anything like it!

Snow White and the dwarf are so lovely! And what a good job on the costumes. I had to make a Superman outfit for my 18 yr old son - fine, but he was built like a stick of celery!! A lot of padding!!!

A friend recently asked me to make a functional bag for her mother in a care home. She wanted it to fasten onto the zimmer frame, as the only ones available were made of net and things kept falling out. It worked so well, all the other ladies wanted them!

I wonder why a cow would need a pillow???

Talking with the ladies in Chat today I was reminded of one of mine. When mama was sick (cancer) she had a port~o~potty for bedside use, but the metal bars were cold and the seat was very hard. the back was to far back. The foot rails hurt her feet. i went to local Alco store and bought 3 inch yellow foam and 8 yards of polar fleece. Dad made a wooden inset to make it sturdier then we covered every possible surface with thick foam and soft polar fleece. on the arms i used a knot and knotted fleece around it. by the time we were done she had the softest, warmest port~o~potty around. When the lid was down many visitors sat on it to talk with her.

Stethescope covers.....I loved them, but a little girl was VERY upset when she saw me wearing one with ants printed on it. Also yard stick holders and a cover for the grill on my father's boat.

:)A spirit flag for my daughter's school.

I would LOVE the pattern for the surgical hats. I recently started work in a dental office at the front desk (completely different field for me & I'm 55) and would dearly love to make a bunch of these as little 'thank you's' for all the folks that have made my transition to the new job so much easier. Please, please share with us? Deb

I took a 2-day workshop with Ann St. Clair on fitting and making your own bras. Excellent! She specializes in bras to fit women who have had breast surgery/reconstruction; although I have not had such surgery, 15 of the 45 women who registered had, and they were thrilled with the results. Everyone else just hated the fit of their bras, shopping for them, paying for them (!!! - I now make bras that FIT for $10 each with top notch materials), you name it, and everyone - EVERYONE - went home with a finished bra that fit!!!

My DH reminded me that years ago i made my dad, who suffered a stroke, men's pants with velcro on the waistband (to keep them up, velcro would stick to his woolrich wool shirts) and a velcro fly. Gave him more dignity while being disabled. My mother and I sewed velcro spots on the wool shirts too, so he could dress himself. He didn't look too neat at first, but he was sooo proud of himself. That was way back in the 1970's. My mother was a piece worker in a slip factory when I was younger. I got her sewing gene, although she never quilted. She crocheted like a demon.

What a wonderful thread read all 43 pages. My claim to fame was a baby doll pajama set made out of a clear garbage bag and lots of red lace. Was a big hit at a bridal shower!!!

I made an elephant hat for a college friend " development elephant" It was made of silver lining fabric and soft sculpted like Cabbage Patch dolls. It was made over a ball cap and cute as can be. She won an A for the effort. It took all night, but it was fun.

I used to make "boots" for a machine part. They looked like vinyl (oil resistant) dryer hoses almost...22 circles (6" in diameter) with a 3" hole in the center...all joined to form a long tube that expanded and contracted with the machine shaft. Those were the most unusual.

owlvamp 11-12-2011 08:55 PM

Can't think of anything unusual i have made.

Katiequiltsalot 11-12-2011 11:17 PM

I think the most unusual thing I have made is a Pee-Pee Tee-Pee. If you have ever had to change a little boys diaper, then you know what the cool air does. So after getting sprayed a few times, I came up with a cone shaped Tee Pee to place strategically as I changed the diaper.

It is a pleasure to be in the company of so many talented and dedicated women. I've enjoyed reading this very long thread!

I guess the most unusual thing that I have ever made was a new fabric seat for a baby walker that was probably originally sold in the 1950's. It had a wire frame and the little wooden beads on the front of it as play things. My little grandson was visiting and we needed a way to corral him a bit. DH dug this walker contraption out of the barn's hay mow. So I cleaned it well and made a new seat for it. It didn't last long, my grandson was a very very fat baby and he ripped it the first day we put him in it, lol! I never knew a baby could have such a perturbed look on their face until that day.

I used to take scraps from a project and make them into pieced little squares, rectangles, and odd shapes of all sizes. Since I joined this board I have learned they are called mug rugs!!! My kids like them now they have a name! LOL!

Most Unusual Item made

I took a wedding dress that had been worn by 3 family members and made Bible covers, hankerchiefs and a garter for a new bride of one of the family members.

Gramkc 11-13-2011 03:57 PM

This really made me smile. There are actually two unusual items I have made. The most fun one was camo fleece covering for my husbands crutches so he could go deer hunting after knee surgery. He managed to bring home the bacon(venison) too. The second item that was unusual was for my elderly aunt suffering from advanced Parkinsons .She was scraping her back whn using the commode, due to her lack of flexibility . I was able to make her a vinyl covering for the back of the commode that was padded with foam which helped reduce pressure on her back.

When I was in high school, back in the 60's, I made the cheer leaders outfits one year. Our high school was new and hadn't much budget, so I volunteered myself, much to my mom's dismay since the girls picked a very complicated pleat pattern. The outfits came out great and I still delight at seeing them on occasion when someone opens one of my old high school yearbooks.

Bill'sBonBon 11-13-2011 04:18 PM

A couple of years ago I made my neighbors husband a new cameo seat for his deer stand.. now he wants a zip up little tote for his personal things like water, snacks Etc. with a little loop to hang it on his deer stand...LOL!!

grammy 11-13-2011 05:35 PM

I have also made my son some scrub hats to wear in surgery. Much cheaper than buying! I have made him some from Christmas fabric, racing fabric, football team fabric, etc. I think others envy him!

I once made a wedding dress from a picture of the front only. There was not pattern available so I used a blouse pattern for the sleeves, a yoke from my daughter's dress pattern, the front and back came from a bathrobe pattern and I free handed the short train. I decided to use a close series of covered buttons and button loops on the back of the yoke. Unbeknownst to me, the attendant dresses had the same detail on the front of their short jackets. Then on the back of the gown, I placed a covered button. At the reception, she put on the fabric bracelet I made to match the attendant's dresses which the bride attached to the button to hold her gown while dancing. -- Obviously, I made a muslin first. NEVER AGAIN!! but I was happy with the results.

Wow! You creative people just amaze me. I don't have an bit of creativity in my cells. I have to follow a pattern. But one of the reasons I wanted to persue quilting was the hope that I might be able to find a cell or two of it in me before I finish this life.

My most unusual thing I have made is a hat for my husband - also I always make his hankerchiefs (which outlast any you can buy). When he did roofing I made him a pillow for his poor knees and he has kept it all these years.

KarenR 11-13-2011 07:48 PM

A seat for a snowmobile, the other one was cracked.

wonderful thread to read! my stuff pretty ordinary.

I made stethescope covers for my daughter who is an RN in the Emergency room. I embroidered and personalized each one. However, shortly after the hospital wouldn't allow them.
