I made myself a handlebar bag for my Harley. The model I own has the speedometer placed a little different than most, so the ones they sell in the motorcycle shop ( for about 40.00) dont fit. I got exactly what I wanted and made it out of materials already in my sewing room!

I had to wear a gallbladder drain for about eight weeks, so I made a cover for the bag out of some very stylish material. I got more compliments from the nurses and doctors and learned that one of my doctors was a quilter. So it was nice when she came in, we had more than just illness to talk about.

Way back in 1972 I made a survival pack for DH to take with him deer hunting. In 1985 we were in Hong Kong and fanny packs were all the rage. Why didn't I think to patent that fanny pack!? The other strange thing I made was a door hanging sewing caddy. I took old jeans and made it big enough to hold my big cutting mats, rulers, and everything else you need for sewing and quilting. Now I am designing a battery pack for a friends leg nerve stimulator.

A teepee, not for children's playtime...a real one!!!

When I was playing Tennis, I made a cover for my racket

with the word TENNIS on it. I used quilted material for the shape and applique the words.

Years ago, I made a briefcase for my DD.

A few years ago my son purchased new tires for his tractor. With it sitting outside he didn't want them to get weather checked so asked me to make covers for the rear tires. That is probably the strangest thing--although the red wool bra I made when I was too young to need one may be more strange.

My sewing has been very varied and conventional. BUT the most unsual request I ever had was "Mom can you sew my balloon?'

I helped my sister make a doll that looked like her...lol...well it turned out a little funny. My daughter was going to be away fro a while(she was in the service) so she thought it would be neat to have her daughter have a mommy doll. We took a pic of her face with the photo fabric sheets so it had her real face on it.
I love all the different things people have done. :)

I am thinking the same thing - unless you consider halloween costumes - when my kids were much younger??

I made a sheath for my husbands deer hunting knife. I bought leather needles and he helped cut the leather and it is really nice!! Deer hunting starts on Saturday in Wisconsin!

When I was a little kid we lived in northern Wisconsin. The hunters all had to wear a red vest. My dad used to say it was so they could tell who all the drunks were - has it changed in 50 years?

I once made a bug screen for our car. I used my old sewing machine for
the job. Came out better then having it made at a car place.

My daughter got Bose headphones to block noise in her office, so I made ear protector covers she can wash to discourage ear infections. They looked like little shower caps to fit on each earpiece.

gellybean402 11-14-2011 05:11 PM

I made a gun rest for a co-worker once. He was so excited and it was just a piece of fabric with plastic beads inside it! LOL!

My daughter was going to Bolivia with Project Pacer and asked me to make scrub hats for the nurses in red, white and blue.

Just talked to my daughter and she said "Mom, you made them because I got a rash on my ears from wearing the headphones."
In thinking back, I made a soft sculpture fire extinguisher in college, my mom made a cover of leatherette for my brother's trombone case. She also made over a hundred fifty dolls, of football players, cheerleaders, band members, with made-to-order hair and eye color, and number on football players jersey-as a band booster fund raiser. When my kids had their wisdom teeth out I made a contraption that held the ice packs in place, so they didn't need to hold them. This has to be the greatest topic I have ever seen here. This is one really creative group!

In the 1970's someone gave me a kitchen table and 4 chairs. the chairs were covered in brown velvet. I hated it. I made new vinyl covers for bothe backs and chairs by sewing three inch strips of oragne, brown and beige autombile material together and then tacked it together with the cute upholstery tacks. It was washable and lasted until I brought something more modern.

A top for my surrey buggy

I made a 6ft x 6ft chuppah or canopy for my son and his American bride to be married under. I had never quilted before so it was quite a challenge! I went on to complete a 2year P and Q course as a result. I am British and the quilt lives in Virginia. Have recently completed butterfly cot quilts for their brand new twin daughters.

The most unusual item I've ever sewed was a candy corn costume for my granddaughter when she was about 11 or 12. I had to use heavy duty heat and bond for the fabric, draft it, cut and sew. The top was a white mitered hat, the body was the orange candy, and the bottom was the yellow part. She has used it several times in the intervening years. It has really held up.

I've also made two piece lion, tiger, bear, and cat costumes. two pc because I always thought they would use them more than once, but the only one I enlarged for one of them was the white kitty cat ..

Candiquilts 11-15-2011 08:00 PM

Shelbie, what a beautiful cocker!!!!!!! I also have two cockers a black and a blonde. The blonde ones name is Shelby.
I have been a breeder for 30 years, but right now I am just a doggie lover!
I have made puppy panties too.

I have made a wide variety of odd objects, including tents, one on a viking model, a fabric barrier to go around an outdoor tournament field, shoes, a flag-themed cowboy hat, a sail for my boat, a quiver for my dad's arrows, a huge number of costumes, a set of flags on Biblical motifs for my church, wrist supports and a quilted cover for my leg brace. I was also commissioned to make a quilt of the Virgin Mary blessing our valley. My younger son was invited to an "antebellum ball". The whole thing fell flat because the guys were unwilling or unable to get into costume, but my son was ready for it anyway.

I think they are called "Helpful Hands" & would make great gifts for NICU wards or craft booths or shower gloves.

KarenMR 11-16-2011 05:47 AM

Costumes & Props for "The Man Who Came Dinner" on an $83 budget. Flea markets are a wonderful thing. I still have the antique candlestick phone.

#1piecemaker 11-16-2011 09:38 AM

I guess it would be an old timey bonnet for my mother to wear in her garden.

Ilovemydogs 11-16-2011 10:14 AM

I made a halloween costume for my niece that was from the movie flushed away. The slug!

JudyJ 11-16-2011 11:59 AM

In the third grade my daughter's nick name was duck. She asked me to make her a duck costume for Halloween. It was about a three foot long duck that she could slip into. In the end I had to take it to an apholsterer to have him sew the leather wings on. It was cute and laughable. I was very proud of that creation.

Cathysews 11-16-2011 01:56 PM

I hope this doesn't offend anyone. Quite a few years back, one of my daughters younger coworker thought that he was a 'God's gift to women. Most of the co-workers were men with a couple of women so we had to make Gag giftd for themall. She had me make cotton boxers out of really bright Christmas fabric 9this was before these became popular) and i found in my stash of craft stuff a sew in music box that played -you guessed it- "It's a small world'. Any ideas who got this "special'pair of shorts. The women, wives and girlfriends who knew him loved this. Sorry about the sexual harrasent but it was a private home party

Cathysews 11-16-2011 02:00 PM

Sorry about all the typos. Found out the hard way that you can't pour rice into rice bags to heat on the same tableas your open laptop. keeppulling grains of rice out from under my non-working keys and my proof reading is not too good.

Sewed a cover for an antique steam locomotive headlight and embloidered the train numbers on it.

I made my son a camoflouge cover for his cam corder even the little flip out screen, so when he was filming in the woods, the sun would not reflect off it.

Monica 10-12-2013 09:20 AM

costumes for miniature horses, I made Clifford the red dog, litte red riding hood , a sheep and a bull.
I've also altered a gun holder so it could be used with a gun having a scope. I've made chair pads for benches. drapes for surgical equipment. I am trying to figure out now how to make a quilt out of my husbands old caps (he has about a hundred!)

Aria 10-12-2013 11:08 AM

Thusnelda, I made made a needlepoint "box" for my rosin. Also did a needlepoint cover in the shape of a violin, to cover my violin in the case. AND, I've made several violin case covers.
Then, there's the horse blanket......

donac 10-12-2013 12:19 PM

I made a green power ranger costume for my younger son and several other costumes. But I think the strangest thing I have ever sewn was a tent for the show Annie Get YOur Gun. It was the entire set inside the tent so it was huge. WE had to lay it out in an empty cafeteria and we moved the sewing machine to where the seams were.
