Since someone's got a topic on the least favorite aspect of quilting, I figured there should be a post on the *favorite* part of quilting.

Mine would have to be designing/planning and then seeing how it comes together.

grammyp 11-23-2010 06:08 AM

I love laying out the finished blocks and finally "seeing" the top come together. Especially if it looks like I envisioned it.

karen65ae 11-23-2010 06:24 AM

Binding by hand.

mrs theo 11-23-2010 06:27 AM

Fabric selection :)

Dagny 11-23-2010 06:29 AM

I love, love, love hand quilting.

quiltsillysandi 11-23-2010 06:29 AM

I enjoy the challenege of piecing, and watching the quilt come to life......

Finding it's home . . . on the wall, on the bed, gifting to recipient, delivering to a charity . . .

deema 11-23-2010 06:33 AM

FINISHING it! LOL Really though, I love each stage as I'm in it, and start to get bored nearing the end of that stage...so when I get to the next stage, I get excited again. The only thing I really don't like is ironing the big pieces before cutting, and pressing the finished quilt top. I wish I could make a quilt without touching the iron...I never did enjoy ironing and only do it in normal life when I *absolutely have to*.

I guess what I love the most is when my plan on paper comes out in fabric how I expected or hoped it would.

Deb watkins 11-23-2010 06:37 AM

I love it when I get the first block put together, and then doing the finished binding. At closings, I love to see everyone's face when the new homeowner opens the housewarming gift.

designing cutting and sewing. just love to quilt. I still have to get my head around FMQ tho

me too. But maybe I should say when I get it back from Dani after she has done such an awesome job of quilting it. She puts the icing on the cake and it is such a thrill opening the package and seeing what she has chosen to do. Always brilliant! Thanks Dani!

I have to agree.....designing and fabric pulls.
As I usually draw out my own designs for a quilt and have a substantial stash of prints (some less than 1/3 yard, but hundreds to choose from), I really enjoy that process.

I have so many "quilts" *made* in my design book or for which the fabrics are all pulled and rolled in a bundle, that sometimes I KNOW I'll never get it all done. And of course, some are several years old, having been bundled years ago when I liked a certin group or colorway.....I usually forget to go back to those bundles and see if I might want them for something current. :?

Maybe I shoulld swap efforts with someone who has trouble choosing patterns and fabrics.............
Nah. :D

First, I'll say my LEAST favorite part is MAKING DECISIONS.

Second, My FAVORITE parts are all the rest, buying fabric, ironing, figuring easiest way to make a multiple number of blocks, (hard time deciding which fabrics to use), cutting, piecing, sewing, ironing, laying out (although too much time deciding final layout), sewing, borders, and ... I'm just starting to like 'sandwiching' the quilt for machine quilting and the binding part.

Wish I could figure out how to make decisions!

LOL! I'm kind of the same way! I have several designs in mind where I started picking out fabric (well, looking on the Internet anyways) before its completely fleshed out. Probably since I've started quilting I had a project in mind to re-create the sea map from Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker into a wall hanging. The design evolves every time I start designing it again---first it had borders and a compass star and now it doesn't, the size and scale changes every time, first the islands were going to be appliqued and now they are going to be screen printed, and it always was planned with watercolor type fabric in a yellowish-peachy type color to give that faded parchment look. I plan some of it, put it away, forget about it for a while, and later end up coming back to it with new ideas. Then there are replicas of the stained glass windows from the same game...still have to get decent shots of them, but have some of the fabric picked out! I have more designs than I have completed quilts!

I really LOVE the piecing part of the process, I always have several projects going at the same time. I am hoping that I will get into the ACTUAL quilting part in 2011. So many tops unfinished

gollytwo 11-23-2010 07:55 AM

Oddly enough, mine is cutting
Which , no doubt, explains why I have about 20 plastic boxes of "started" quilts

Borntohandquilt 11-23-2010 08:06 AM

No doubt: hand quilting! :-)

maryel 11-23-2010 09:10 AM

Piecing and sewing on the machine. As the blocks get bigger and bigger I get more excited to see what they will be when completely sewn. It always amazes me to see blocks come together.

Suzan Larrimore 11-23-2010 09:20 AM

Giving it to the loved one it was made for.

dellareya 11-23-2010 09:22 AM

First I love seeing how the quilt looks after being LA quilted by Daisey. Amazing work. Then I love sewing the binding down by hand. Sewing it by hand gives me a real connection to the quilt.

Iluv2quilt 11-23-2010 09:30 AM

Once my design is chosen my favorite part is sewing. :-D I love to sew!!

mysippycup2 11-23-2010 09:36 AM

Funny to admit this but I think my favorite part, other than putting the blocks together, is ironing. I get some sort of strange satisfaction from starching and pressing the fabric ... weird I know.

mommafank 11-23-2010 09:36 AM

Love hand piecing, too. I have been told I am sort of wierd but who cares?

msariano 11-23-2010 09:37 AM

I love the hand quilting part. The stitches really transform it into a warm and cozy hug.

SherriB 11-23-2010 09:41 AM

You may think I am crazy but I love hand-sewing the binding onto my quilt. It is the last step in making it and so rewarding.

Sadiemae 11-23-2010 10:52 AM

Everything except Binding!

Quiltforme 11-23-2010 02:15 PM

I am enjoying the FMQ on my latest quilt. It is much more fun than I anticipated!!

Momof3Es 11-23-2010 02:20 PM

I think first would be buying fabric!! The other part would be putting it together to see if it looks like I thought it would and hopefully it's straight!!

CindyBee 11-23-2010 02:32 PM

I love the quilting part, but I agonize over the perfect quilting pattern for that particular quilt. Many times I don't decide how to quilt it until the quilt is sandwiched. Sometimes I just have to leave it laid out in my sewing room for days or weeks until it speaks to me. Sometimes I will machine quilt and sometimes I will hand quilt. I am almost done quilting a queen size by hand. I sure wish this quilt had said "machine quilt me, please", LOL.

I don't think you are strange. I love to starch and press fabric too. The zen of ironing, LOL.

katei 11-23-2010 02:34 PM

Glass of wine and hand-stitching the binding

amma 11-23-2010 02:57 PM

Designing is and probably always will be my favorite part :D:D:D

Tropical 11-23-2010 03:10 PM

My favorite part is the Dreaming It Up stage. I love to take nature pictures and I see how they can be translated into quilts.
I love fabrics and before I started to teach myself to quilt, I told my husband I must be a collector because I see fabrics I just have to have in my stash. Well, my stash grew over a few years before I started cutting any of them. I was afraid I would ruin them. Then I bought a book on applique and I just got started. I love to embroider so applique suits me. Now I have a few quilt tops done and am ready to learn how to finish them.
I had to medically retire from teaching eight years ago and have missed the creativity of it. Quilting has brought the joy of being creative back into my life. I look forward to the joy of sharing my quilts with my loved ones.

Annaquilts 11-23-2010 03:13 PM

Designing and routine piecing are my favorite parts. My least favorite are the quilting but that might change if I ever get a long arm.

annyroony2 11-23-2010 03:14 PM

Deciding what pattern I want to use, then the fabric selection and the cutting process. I enjoyed hand quilting for many years and now I am enjoying FMQ very much.

grammyj 11-24-2010 06:56 AM

Mine is when it's DONE !!

117becca 11-24-2010 07:32 AM

i love the quilt coming alive as i hand quilt.

But the best part is giving it to the person it is meant for ~ especially when i am able to surprise the person!

KathyKat 11-26-2010 07:35 AM

I like dreaming up the design or even selecting a design. Then selecting the fabrics, sewing and hand sewing the binding are really fun. Well, lets face it, I love the whole process.

ccb2200 11-26-2010 07:41 AM

I love it when it is finished and I can use it or give it away to someone.
