Quilting ability is the worst flaw I have; not the only one, but the worst. :D

Rettie V. Grama 02-21-2011 10:31 AM

I find that most puckers are caused by different weights fabric. Example: Sew a strip of all cotton fabric with a strip of cotton gingham, you will have puckers.

Just try to stay with the same weight fabric and if possible use the same manufacturer for the whole quilt.
This is difficult to accomplish, but worth the time and effort.

I guess my flaw would be that I hate finishing the quilt because it hurts my arms to move it around. I tire easily so it's a major chore to push that sucker thru the machine or even lift it. I also hate the cutting process.

Try changing the pressure foot to a lighter tension. I noticed that when I start to quilt the whole thing I loosen the foot pressure and I don't get as many puckers. So far it has helped and I now have barely any puckers.

I have missmatched seams, puckers, missing points. I can live with all that but what bugs me the most about myself is that I never finish anything. I have them in all stages from just needing binding to a project box with all the fabric for the quilt in it. I inevitably find a project that speaks to me before I finish the last one that spoke to me. I even have unfinished potholders. How sad is that.

patski 02-21-2011 12:01 PM

I agree, the older you get the less you notice flaws! We all do the best we can on any given day!! I also have trouble with 1/4 inch seams so I am now drawing lines with a pencil first!!

IDquilter 02-21-2011 12:22 PM

Oh these replys are all so funny, I could say that my arm is killing me since I pat myself on the back all the time but then that would be fibbing. If something really bugs me I will rip it out 3 times, if after that it still isn't right too bad, it stays and besides once quilted usually you don't notice it anyway - I haven't met a 'perfect' person yet.

Sometimes I'm just too picky. I've been at my worst with this stained glass quilt project because of all the different colors involved (70+) and have been driving myself INSANE trying to match the colors as closely as I can. But I tried improvising and printed out the image in black and white and colored in with the same general colors and it looked a bit off. I figure "Hey, this is my project. I have a vision and I'm going to stick with it and people are going to think it looks freaking fantastic when its finished".

libber 02-21-2011 12:41 PM

How are you pressing the fabric before sewing? Are all the fabrics of the same fiber/material?

dltaylor 02-21-2011 12:42 PM

I'm with you on the puckers, I can overlook everything except the puckers.

granny5 02-21-2011 01:25 PM

ONE of my biggest flaws, getting up in the morning and making plans to get so much accomplished when I get home from work - then being so tired when I do get home, I get very little done. Just not enough days in the weekend!

Amen to that!

kjdavis4 02-21-2011 01:48 PM

My biggest flaw is hand applique. I've tried all of the different methods and nothing ever looked decent. The shapes did not look like they were supposed to, they were not sewn on the block where they were supposed to be and/or the stitching didn't look good. I'm still trying though. I'm determined to accomplish the dreaded "A" word.

I cannot miter a corner. I try, I buy gadgets, I take classes and still three corners are good and the fourth is pathetic!!!

brightstar_202 02-21-2011 02:46 PM

mine is I get in too big of a hurry...I try to slow down but it seems as though I have to hurry it up so I can get started on another one...DUH you wouldthink I would learn.........

gangles 02-21-2011 03:04 PM

I Don't think I can top that one! I love it.

MadQuilter 02-21-2011 03:19 PM

My road to hell is paved with good intentions. In the end, all my plans to FINISH something get lost in all the distractions. So Not Finishing is my biggest flaw. (But if you heard my tall tales, I sure am busy quilting up a storm.)

purple_butterfly 02-21-2011 03:22 PM

I'm an impatient perfectionist and I can't sew straight! :?

bammy1 02-21-2011 03:48 PM

Not getting my seams to line up...tear out, tear out and restitch. Didn't notice it on my first quilt but see the flaws now! My machine quilting leaves much to be disired too. I want it all perfect with little practice!

Made me laugh.

Gave me a chuckle!

Pat P 02-21-2011 04:13 PM

I have no flaws....yuck yuck, BUT my sewing machine is fickle and my rotary tool has a mind of its own!!

I like the quilting to look as good on the back as it does on the front - sometimes I find that it doesn't...

wraez 02-21-2011 04:23 PM

Procrastination and having weeks or months when I don't quilt

BettyGee 02-21-2011 04:31 PM

I love fabric way too much, think I absolutely have to have "that" pattern and oh my gosh that is the best quilting book I've ever seen.

Same here.

gigiri5 02-21-2011 04:34 PM

I never complete a quilt. I say I just like to choose fabric and learn a technique when the truth is, I'm easily distracted and want to try the next thing I see. You can imagine what my quilt room looks like.....Gigi

Daisy144 02-21-2011 04:52 PM

I have to say that I do have 1/4" seams pretty consistently because I hand quilt and use the 1/4" tape which is fantastic but my biggest flaw is procrastation - starting so many things and putting them aside for something new before I finish the first!

whitediamond00 02-21-2011 05:31 PM

My worst flaw is just getting myself to sit down at the sewing machine and start. Once I've started, I don't want to stop.

lheizen 02-21-2011 05:39 PM

procrastination

annyroony2 02-21-2011 05:51 PM

Flaws?? I like for my quilts to have character, and believe me they do!

USE GARDENING GLOVES. GET THEM SMALLER, SMALL BUMPS.

Same here! I try to just ignore it, but it's there and I can spot it a mile away, so a rip-it I go!

Hey, who says the quilt you are looking at has the "right" colors. I have people look at my quilts and say, "ooooh, you have such a fun color sense" (or something) and others say, "Oh my, errrr, yes, very interesting" and make me feel sorry for them because of the agony on their face. Opinions vary from AAA to ZZZ.

Sierra 02-21-2011 07:01 PM

OK, I've read all the input and here is my final say:

I was the San Francisco Folk Art Museum where there was a show entitled "4 generations" of quilters. There was a wonderful video of the second generation who talked about her mother, her daughter and her granddaughter. She talked about picking up a piece of fabric (probably pretty much pre-cut by her to an unraggedy shape) and looking at it for a moment and then after a turn or two, began to sew.

The person doing the interview said, "But what if you make a mistake?" The grandmother's eyes flew open in astonishment (she doesn't make mistakes????) and she threw back her head and roared with laughter, and when under control she said, "Honey, if you make something with love there can't be any "mistake". Love doesn't leave room for mistakes." (my memory may be paraphrasing).

My answer to the question of my worst flaw: I still agonize about puckers, mismatching seams..... until I remember this wonderful woman and her beautiful way of relating to life.
