I put leftovers from other quilts in scrap containers and then use them for scrappy quilts. I toss anything smaller than 1". I have so many large yardage pieces that I should not worry about using up scraps but, I do.
I cut fabrics for a quilt, saving all remaining fabrics until the quilt top is finished and the binding cut. Then I take any pieces of 1/4 yard or less and cut them into 10" squares, 5" squares, 4" squares and strips of various sizes. Then they are ready for a scrap quilt and i don't have lots of oddball pieces laying around that I don't know what to do with.

I cut my fabric as it comes in into strips - 1 1/2", 2". & 2 1/2" strips, save the rest, when I use most of that it goes into the bits and pieces and string box. I've been sewing smaller pieces together to make many colored strings - I love this look in my string blocks.

I am contemplating putting small scraps into gallon size baggies and adding them to my Goodwill things to go. They can throw them away if they don't want them, or maybe someone would like to have them for various reasons. There is just something in my brain that won't let me throw them away.

It has to be really small. then it goes in the trash!
I cut up anything less than an 1/8 yard into 6", 3 ", and 2 " inch squares, 3.5 inch tumblers, and 2 inch strips...starting with the largest sizes first. Fat quarters with "chunks" missing still go in the stash as I do a lot of block swaps, etc. where only a couple blocks are needed. It's amazing how many things I've made from the precuts!

2.5" squares for 1" hexies and postage stamp quilt in the future!
I move it to the scrap bag when it's much smaller than a fat quarter (maybe a fat eighth).
I usually put anything less than 5" into the scrap bin. I figure that if I need a piece of material for a craft thing other than quilting, like for applique pieces or pot holders or something, then I haven't cut everything into scraps and wouldn't have to pull something from larger yardage.
