When do you move fabric from stash to scrap bin
How small a piece of fabric do you keep in your stash before moving it to the scrap bin? I spend over a week working on my stash bin cutting it into squares to cut down on the amount of scraps. I got about half of it done. Some of the squares were only about 1 1/2". Some bigger but I have some pieces in my stash that are 1/4 yds that have had some used out up out of it. Just wondered how big a piece you put in your scraps.

Anything smaller than 1/4 yard (fat or long) I move to scraps.

I am glad you ask this question...I have often wondered this myself.

I struggle with this all the time. Then last week heard a new term "chunks". This is fabric that you use for make new fabric sort of like a crazy quilt. Just sew the piece on to the next one. So do I start another box for these?
For me if it is less the 1/8 yard or half a FQ then I cut into pieces, i.e. Bonnie Hunters methodology. Unfortunately I need to do more of that. |
For me, scrap is what goes in the wastebasket or the recycle bag (to take to a shredder).
Otherwise, it's "various sizes of small pieces" or "remnants" - depending on whether I started out with small pieces or it's a leftovers from a project. I put smallish pieces (probably equivalent of 1/8 yard and smaller) of the "same" color into plastic totes. |
Usually smaller than a half of a half of a fat eight goes into the scrap box.

I have 1 yard and more on mini bolts. I have an under 1 yard bin and a drawer of fat quarters. Everything smaller than 1/4 goes into my scrap bin.
|
I usually scrap anything 1/4 a yard and smaller. But I am very bad about sticking anything left over from cutting out a quilt into a bag and forgetting about it until I find it stuck away somewhere.

I join the group that puts "less than 1/4 yard" pieces in the scrap bin. Anything larger I fold on comic boards.
