For a scrappy quilt I just pull out a piece from my scraps, however I don't put 2 alike together.

It amazes me that this thread is started right when I need it!!! Making a scrappy cat quilt for my daughter and I have been uneasy about the "scrappy" part. I have always combined colors within the same tones and that are complimenting each other and I am uncertain about the total lack of this in my current project. I am realizing that I need to step out of my comfort zone and "just do it". Thanks!

When I am in a quilt slump...I pull out my scraps and make totally mindless scrappys. The funny thing is that everyone loves them and says they are the best. I found that they looked ugly until all sewn and FMQ'd than they look AWESOME. Right now I am into 2 inch postage stamps (I am using white 2 inch squares this time next to the color fabric...but not even thinking of what is going where...except no color fabric touch) - doing them at the same time as other quilts. I do find I spend extra time on them since they are for fun and I do 30 pieces in a row so my goal is always to finish that row. I made 6 rows yesterday while making another quilt top. I love doing two quilts at a time and find it really does not slow down the process.

carolaug--yes I find myself doing the same thing. I'll make random 9P from 1 inch or 1 1/2 inch pieces. Set them aside and then when I have a quick donation quilt to put together I'll take a dozen or so (especially of the little ones) find a common color to tie them all together. They make the cutest little mini's.

I like to have one fabric that is constant throughout - i guess you would call that the background. I really don't like a 100% scrappy quilt. Too busy for me.

This is gorgeous. Did you cut all the strips urself?
