I really like the look as it is........and maybe a small inner border and a wider outer one......that would help to get the right width for you......
it's your quilt, so it your choice.......but as it is, it looks great.... |
you can just put some sashing strips between them and see how you like it. If I were doing it I would just butt them together it looks neat that way.

I would probably not sash it, but add borders instead or if you do sash it, maybe sash not each block but every 4 (4 block square) so you keep the diamond pattern of 4 blocks together
Heres my string quilt.. I used a foundation muslin leaving the center diagonals blank to get the lattice effect.I'm very happy with how it turned out. Yours will be gorgeous no matter what you do ;-) |
no sashing. Like it this way maybe a black border or a med brown.
|
I wouldn't put sashing on it either, pops out without it.
Very pretty. |
I'd use on of the greens for the sashing and frame and then bind it in black.
|
I am just finishing a red, white & blue quilt. I am doing a 2 inch white sashing. I put 4 blocks togather & framed the blocks. I will also put a border on, have not decided on color yet. I think sashing does wounders.
|
I think any deep color, or light color, print (curved lines?) or solid might work

The blocks are just pinned to my flannel wall; I have yet to sort them on where they should go.
I think I'd join the blocks so the diamonds are one and make up the difference with borders. |

I would most definitely NOT sash it. I would put a 1 inch dark border and then a wider border around the outside (maybe 3-4 inches). I completely love the secondary patterns you get when you put the blocks together.

Perhaps balance the design by moving the blocks to make a layout of 4 X 6 squares with no sashing and having 2 large diamond squares (4 block unit) at the top and bottom. Then a narrow medium color border border - red??? - then a darker border. Sometimes the only way I can figure out sashing and borders, is to audition several colors of fabric, take pictures, and one will stand out. Your quilt will be beautiful however you choose to complete it! |
I agree, butt them together, add a 1.5" "stopper" in a dark color then add your border. Have you thought any of doing a piano key border? It could be interesting.
|
your quilt is very beautiful...where did you get your pattern/instructions?...i would love to make the same pattern after i finish my current quilt...
|
It looks great "as is". If you need it bigger, add more of the same blocks. If you don't have more of the same fabrics... use different fabrics with similiar tones and mix em up.
If you want to audition different sashings... just put the fabric of choice behind the blocks and space the blocks one or two inches apart. Stand across the room and look at it... you'll know if one catches your eye. Try different colors, before you make any cuts. I have a program called Quilt Pro. I like it much better than Electric Quilt. I use it to audition different blocks with and without sashing, and change colors with a click. Good Luck, sewdarnbusy |

"Stand across the room and look at it... you'll know if one catches your eye."
You can do this but squink your eyes a little bit...An odd/predominate color (if there is one) will pop out and you might want to eliminate it or use it more through out (if you make more blocks) to balance the top. |

2, no more that 3-inches wide. No matter the color of your blocks, the color of the sashing will determine the color of your quilt. Red sashing, red quilt. And the first border, the one that touches the blocks/sashing should be the same color. This continuity helps carry the eye throughout the quilt.
Blocks look great! Sandy |
I am basically a beginner of only a few years, but just looking at what looks GOOD - I think it will be GREAT WITHOUT SASHING...just borders. Pretty!
|
...No sashing unless you are going for a basic color, like to match a room or favorite color, then I'd probably like a pale shade of that color...I love lavender, that robin-egg blue.
|
Remember one thing it is your quilt and it is nice to get ideas, then you decide what you want to do. I have had help like this on many of my quilts, sometimes that helps you decide the way to go with it.
Everyone thinks I have an eye for it, but if it wasn't for the help of my fellow quilters I wouldn't have went with the way it turned out, but I am sure glad that I have asked for their help, for everyone sees things different. |
I like using 1" between squares. Adds a PoP but without seeming to simply add to the size.
|
I agree with asmmauer, especially with the piano keys border along the outside edge. A narrows inside black border migiht look nice I love the diamond effect.

I think I'd do a 1"...but as you can see, it's all personal opinion. YOu might try cutting a couple of different widths and place them to see what you like...and do the same with the colors. Then, you'll know it when you hit it!

Please post a photo when you decide what to do. We all will want to see it.

I agree with everyone saying no sashing, it's beautiful like it is, and to make bigger just use borders. You can make one 2-3 inch border, and then a wider one which will make it a nice size, plus you can also make it longer with adjusting the width of the bottom & top.
|
I vote for black sashing 1" wide, maybe 1.5". But I have seen some strip quilts done with light sashing and they were pretty too.
|
Thank you for the bigger picture, Sue. It worked just fine. After looking at that one, for sure I am going to put on the sashing. I didn't like the confused look that quilt had. I think the sashing makes it look more planned, kinda like the way I like things, even down to my gardening. I'm not one to just scatter a package of mixed seeds and wait for things to grow. The young girl I am giving it to wants black sashing anyway and another lady here gave me an excellent idea on how to do it, so we shall see.
I so appreciate all of the suggestions and help you wonderful people have given me. I'll leave the next planned striped quilt without sashing :) |
I would use a 2 1/2 yellow or red sashing to make it pop. put yellow fabric on your design wall, add 2 or 3 blocks and see how it looks. Take the same idea with other fabrics and see witch one you like best.

I like it the way it is, no sashing. Add a black border to make the colors pop!
