I am almost done with my striped quilt, first try. It needs to be twin size. Is there any advice on how wide to make the sashing between blocks so that it doesn't look just like I am trying to make it bigger by using sashing? I want it to be a reasonable amount but don't want to go overboard. Also, should sashing be dark if most of the strips are dark or of your choosing or what? Print, solid? Ideas needed. The blocks are just pinned to my flannel wall; I have yet to sort them on where they should go.

Just my thought but I'd probably just use around 2 inch sashings and I'd go dark like maybe black. I'm no expert tho!

I would not sash it...
A one inch black sashing would make the colors pop. Then I'd add the same around the outside for a frame, then another border of your choice if you want one. It may not need a wider border - just the narrow black sashing and black binding.
That is pretty without sashing. I would just put a couple borders on.
I like string quilts with sashing and I like the ones I've seen with light colored sashing. I'm guessing 2" would be a good size.
I rather like the effect given by the white design wall behind the blocks.......thin and light colored.

Exactly what she said |
I think a dark color over lighter color because dark is what i see when i look at the quilt.
You do see the diamond shapes when you don't have the sashing - but if the sashing was about 1" wide for example, you might also still see the diamonds... When adding the border, i also would keep the fabric darker in tone. I always have "try" out different colors to see which one my eyes like better. |
I like it as is, no sashing.
I would not sash it. It is quite beautiful as it is!
I like it as it is.
I would not put sashing on it. I like it the way it is. You can add several borkers quite effectively.
I like it as is no sashing and I to think black would be beautiful as a border with maybe the piano keys with all the colors of your quilt same width as what you used in your blocks along outside edge of border to help give you more length and width. It is going to be beautiful no matter what you do really like diamond effect.
I would put a narrow light strip between blocks, maybe 1", then the same light fabric for a wider border.

It sounds like everyone is on the "fence" with advice. I'd put a VERY small LIGHT color sashing between the blocks and then another small border all the way around to frame it. Then add additional larger borders until you have it the size you want it to be.
I love scrappy quilts and yours is no exception. It's BEAUTIFUL!!! |
I'd use whatever size washing *looks* right between the blocks and then add multiple borders to enlarge it if need be.

I like it without a sashing , but if you must go with a thin sashing, no wider than the majority of the strip widths in the blocks.

I love that pattern without the sashing. I definitely would not sash. The colors are so beautiful and work together to please the eye, I would not break that up with sashing.
beautiful work, will look great with or without sashing. If u sash, make it black!

I have made several of these quilts and am working on one now. I sashed it with 1 1/2 inch black strips and I really dont like it. I will never sash one again. |
You have an very beautiful quilt there!
I would go with a light sashing in around the blocks to make the colors pop and to make it easier to assemble. There will be less bulk at the edges of the block with a 1 - 2" sashing. I would sash with a light color around all the edges of the blocks, and then add a darker sash border to get the quilt to the desired dimensions. |
If you need it larger, I would probably stitch several borders, start with about a 3" border, then a 1 1/2" border then wider border. that would kind of keep with the strip look and make it larger.
I would put a 1 inch black sashing, then a 1 in border then a wider border of something else. the Black would make the colors pop.
Oh, please dont sash it. It is great this way. I would use a thin black border, piano keys of your prints, then a wider black border. Would be gorgeous.
I agree with lbarron
LOVE supergma's idea!
I would go with a 2" sashing and go with a lighter color.
NOW how do I make a decision, LOL. I'm in the same position now as before I asked the question with one added advantage of, if she wants it sashed, having some really wonderful ideas. Thank you, everyone. I'm going to print this out and study it, however, if I DO have to sash it for her, and I begin the next one, I will definitely have "not sashing it' in mind when I make it to see how great the difference will be.
check various widths to see which looks best.
I vote no sashing, too. Why break the pretty flow of the pattern with sashing? You may have to make more blocks to get the width/length you need, though--and use a wide border.
I think a narrow stip of black or navy would be very striking, making the contrast between each block 'pop'.
If this is for a bed...I too would have odd number of blocks..say 4 or 5 across..then 5 or 7 down. As far as sashing..I like the pattern to meet the edge of the bed on the sides, etc. Therefore, I will figure my sashing so the measurements accomplish this. Then when you add the border...it hangs over the bed but the quilt design is on the top of the bed. I hope I've explained this right.
If you think the border is too wide..I like to add say a 2" or 3" border than use the fabrics in main quilt and make a another small 1'2" strip around that and then add another border to reach the length you want to hang down the sides. |
if your counting votes, mine is No sashing, just a thin and wide boarder

Well, I would sew 4 blocks together in order to keep the diamond design, then put sashing between them in order to see each individual design. I know it's probably just me - but when there is no sashing in a strippy/scrappy quilt everything runs together.
