Will the quilt police come knocking at my door?
 

Or more importantly...any reason why I should not do it this way?
I'm making a large quilt with a shoofly border.
Each shoofly will be one color (assorted) with white in the middle and corners.
Usually the shoofly block is made of nine patch with HST's in the corner.
What if I just cut one long strip and add white squares in the corner
and sew diagonal lines? That's for the top and bottom.
The middle will be as usual color square/white/color square.
Would that be ok? Or would it look better the traditional way?

Can't hurt to try it that way- and remember the only rule we have is there are no rules :) Keep us posted on how it works.

Your quilt, your rules. Have you considered just making it a 9-patch with the corners and center white and the other 4 the color? As a border it would be like a dot-dash pattern in alternating colors in the three rows. With mitered corners it would work just fine. Whatever you decide will be fine...and there are no quilt police, really there aren't. :)

So your talking about a cutting a rectangle that's 3 units long by 1 unit wide (including seam allowances) and sticking a triangle on each end? That would work.

BTW, I hadn't seen this shoo fly variation before, so thanks for the block.

Oh wait, do you mean sew the white squares in the corners of the rectangle with a diagonal line and then flip the down pointing point up to make a triangle? That would work, yes, but trim off the two layers (color and white) that are under the top white triangle (trim to a ¼" seam). Make sense? The only difference would be no vertical seams in the top and bottom pieces. Sounds pretty smart to me!

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. I think I will give this a go and see how I like it.
