Wonder Clips

Are they worth the expense. I have never used one and priced them at the LQS and decided pins are much cheaper. If they are fabulous and well recommended I will bite the bullet. Thanks for the help.

You can get those small clips at some hardware stores. I was using those for a decade or so on binding, the tip coming from someone on my Stashbusters list.

kathy 03-31-2014 02:19 PM

I bought a pack of the small ones at Hancock's with a 40% off coupon, I like them but I only pin or clip 15-20 inches at a time, they come in handy for lots of other stuff too. The girl at Hancock's told me they carry them at Sally Beauty supply, without the measurements on them and a lot cheaper.

Sue Kitten 03-31-2014 02:19 PM

I purchased a set and they work great. I used to use hair clips that snap down in the middle ( I hope you know what I'm talking about). The wonder clips seem to hold much better. I have the very small ones. I thought I was ordering the medium ones so was a little surprised when the package arrived. I don't know if Joann's sells them or not. If so you could use a coupon ( our Joann's is very small so they don't carry as much as there larger stores

AliKat 03-31-2014 02:20 PM

I took a binding class when they first came out. The instructor gave each of us 2. her comment was to buy a package of 10 and share them with friends, 2 for each friend.

I know of those who use the 50 package but using 2-3 was always good enough for me.

I do have arthritis in my hands/fingers so pins aren't really an option. Before the Wonder Clips I did glue basting for my bindings and even put a written tute on the QB.

jbaby 03-31-2014 02:34 PM

I bought a box of 50, and line them up on stretches of my quilt, but I agree with AliKat, you really don't need that many. I really love them and use them on every quilt. To me, they're worth it.

raedar63 03-31-2014 02:37 PM

I use bobby pins lol

0tis 03-31-2014 02:42 PM

I have a box of 50 - they are great for bindings and if you make bags - keeps you from sticking yourself with pins.

Treasureit 03-31-2014 02:43 PM

I have some, but don't use them too much.

auntpiggylpn 03-31-2014 02:51 PM

I really like them! I bought a package of 10 but thought that wouldn't be enough so found a great deal on a package of 50 and bought them. I have never used 50 of them at one time!!! I use them when I am binding my quilts and I also use them for making my EPP Hexies.

Yes, they are worth the expense. If you're worried about cost, go in halvsies with a friend on a box of 50. Save your fingers!

Dina 03-31-2014 02:54 PM

I love mine. I bought the at Hancocks with one of their 40% off coupons. They are also available at Amazon and probably a lot of other places. I used to use those hair clip thins, but these work so much better for me.

They are more useful to me then pins. I seldom use pins anymore. They are great for matching seams and leave in place while sewing. No pricks and no pins to drop.

Shirlrh 03-31-2014 03:23 PM

I always use them when doing bindings.

nativetexan 03-31-2014 03:23 PM

I have used those silver clips that look like hair clips for years. love them. however, I did buy some of the red clips that were on sale. sending one pkg to a friend in England later on. I've used them and they seem fine too.
binding clips are difficult for my fingers to work with. I tend to have them go flying out of my hand!

davis2se 03-31-2014 03:40 PM

If I'm hand sewing on binding (which I don't do too much since finding the Elmer's glue binding system) I use large paperclips. They work great, and are very inexpensive.

yadroc 03-31-2014 03:49 PM

I thought they were expensive, but got some when I was in the US from Joann's. I love them, well worthy the money.

I purchased more online when Joann's had them half off about a month ago.

pinkcastle 03-31-2014 04:04 PM

I also use them for binding. I bought the package of 50 but I found that I only use about five at a time. I do like them better than pins.

PlanoDebbie 03-31-2014 04:37 PM

I bought a package of them when they were on sale a few months ago on Amazon. The only time I use them is when I'm doing my binding. They hold the binding in place really nice. The other thing I like is not getting stuck with straight pins when I grab my quilt to move it around. I do like to put at least 15-20 on my binding at a time because I don't want to keep moving the clips. I keep the container right next to me and just toss them in as I pull them off the quilt. I've never used it during any other process in quilting. I bought another package recently when Hancock had all of their notions 50% off. If you can get them on sale or use a coupon, buy them at a good price.

luvTooQuilt 03-31-2014 04:50 PM

I love mine.. Hubby got me 2 bags of 50 for Xmas.... and two bags of the bigger green ones too...

I use ALL my red ones when im binding my quilts.... even at 120 i dont have enough.. lol..

cathyre 03-31-2014 05:03 PM

I have them ,love them wouldn't like to do binding without them . Cathy

janRN 03-31-2014 05:08 PM

If you do any paper piecing I think these are a must. You can clip sections together without the distortion that pins cause trying to pin thru 2 layers of paper and the layers of fabric. And since they're flat on the bottom they slide along while sewing without catching on the machine bed. They slide off easily as you sew towards them so you don't have to stop in order to remove them as the needle approaches. I got a pack of 50 on Amazon and they are worth every penny to me.

quiltingcandy 03-31-2014 05:22 PM

I bought them a few years ago from Amazon - the sewing industry were charging a premium for them at the time. But I use them for binding and also when I match seams with the glue stick. They slide off easily. And I agree - you don't need a whole lot of them, but I got the box of 50 because 1.) they were much cheaper and 2.) sometimes they run and hide from me. (They always show back up - but I believe that is because they know there are more to replace them.)

gotta-sew 03-31-2014 05:47 PM

I just bought some from Amazon.com. They came so highly recommended I decided "why not". I paid approx. $14.00 for 50. They do have marks to help keep your binding even.

Material Witness 03-31-2014 05:49 PM

Yes, they really are easier to use than pins or other clips because they are flat on one side. I bought the tiny ones for about ten bucks, but as others have said, I've probably never used more than 8 at a time.

TeresaA 03-31-2014 06:18 PM

I use the hair clippie type and only use about 2-3 at a time. I find that any kind of binder clip will distort my binding, so they just hold the binding a ways down from where I'm stitching, and I position my binding with my finger. (I always do my back of binding by hand.)

The wonder clips look like they would work great on a sewing machine, but they are "right handed" when used that way. I am left-handed and would probably find myself reaching around with my left hand to remove them while sewing. I like pins better for this. I can trap them with my right index finger and drag them into the crack between the sewing arm and the expansion arm, to be removed when I need them for the next thing.

As an aside, I would love to be right handed for just one day. It must be so much easier. In general, I love the unique-ness of being left-handed.

Wawaks has a good price on the wonder clips too. (no affil).

Cass62 03-31-2014 07:23 PM

I really like my wonder clips, but recently came across a bag of mini clothespins at the craft store and wondered if they might work just as well. Has anyone here tried it?

Cybrarian 03-31-2014 07:53 PM

I have the green & the red, use them all the time for a variety of things.

cathyvv 03-31-2014 07:53 PM

I use bobby pins to hold binding in place around the quilt so I can sew it on. The reason I started using them is that the motion to clip anything on the binding caused my hands to ache and the pins seemed to seek me out just to poke me and make me bleed.

They're really cheap - 99 bobby pins for less than $2.

cathyvv 03-31-2014 07:54 PM

Me, too. Works great and they are really cheap.

Jim 03-31-2014 08:37 PM

I use the red wonder clips for bindings and a few other odd jobs....I got two boxes of fifty at JoAnns with 40% off coupons and 25% off the total sale. I love them and I use all 100 of them at a time so I can sew and take them off quickly and not stop until I'm done or need to add more clips depending on size of quilts.

AngeliaNR 03-31-2014 08:45 PM

I like using them when I'm sewing rows of blocks together--one on each seam I'm matching. I use them on binding at the corners to keep the miters together as I hand stitch.

notmorecraft 03-31-2014 10:50 PM

The wonder clips are expensive in the uk. at the moment I use the small binder clips from staples, but I'm hoping to get some wonder clips hopefully with money off coupons in either Joannes or Hobby Lobby when across the pond in Sep.

DOTTYMO 03-31-2014 10:58 PM

I purchased a pkt of 10 from Amazon UK. I'm down to my last 2 by giving away to friends with poor hands.

Knitette 04-01-2014 12:22 AM

These are one of my most-used items! I use them not only for sewing bindings, bags etc, but also checking the 'fit' of binding on my quilts so there no joins at corners.

I also use them for clipping fabrics groups together for class and sorting appliqué shapes. Every time I lend some at class, the borrowers says she's going to buy some!

Just recently I used them to keep all the squares for my twister separate - as I cut them for sewing and again after I'd used the ruler to cut out. Much better than pins - no marks and no blood, lol.

Reba'squilts 04-01-2014 03:07 AM

I love them! Use them for the hand sewing part of the binding. No finger pokes!

Dbhefner 04-01-2014 03:13 AM

I really like them for quilt binding, and I LOVE them for sewing items with vinyl or PUL that you don't want to poke holes into.

Aurora 04-01-2014 03:23 AM

I bought a box of 100 hair clips at Sally's for $5.95 and use them for all kinds of projects.

WMUTeach 04-01-2014 03:23 AM

I got a package of ten as a door prize at a quilt quilt meeting and I use them now every time I add my binding. Pricey, yes indeed but I don't need 50 of them. The ten I have is sufficient. I do like them particularly when traveling with an unfinished project. I always seemed to snag my self with the pins, ouch! and just not so with the clips. If you can find them cheaper, then go for it, but I really like them and use them on every quilt.

momsobon 04-01-2014 03:25 AM

They were just on sale for 19.99 on Amazon.com for a 50 package and I love mine.
