I bought a huge jar full of wooden spools and have it in my sewing room.

I had bought an old gum ball dispenser. I filled it full of wooden spools. I also had one that I filled with the "old timey" wooden clothes pins. It makes a great display in my sewing room.

You have a treasure. Don't ever throw them out.

There was a display at our library of carved wooden spools. This site shows some neat carved spools. http://info.fabrics.net/decorative-r...wooden-spools/

I will not use old thread. However, I have kept all the old spools, with the remaining thread in a couple of jars. Two spools with some thread, I dipped in polyurethane and used as "buttons" on a sewing tote I made for a friend-----------with a spool quilt block as the front pocket.

I have a big glass jar I keep them in for decoration in my sewing room. Thats a good idea about putting the scraps of fabric around them. :)

I collected them for years. The smaller ones make great knobs on sewing room furniture. I have a very large one with a gold colored thread on it that my Moma used to sew things on my Daddy's Navy uniforms, when he was in WWII and the Korean War.
