I did this too! I was able to find a lid kit in Shipshewana several years ago and used a jar that came from my grandmother's cellar. The spools of thread came from my mother's sewing cabinet. I love my little lamp.:)

My father made us knitting knobbies out of wooden spools many years ago. I saw an idea the other day to glue ribbon or fabric on them for ornaments. Our preschool teacher uses them with yarn for coordination training and I have a friend who carves them with a Dremel tool. I have seen necklaces with painted spools and toys made by gluing them together. They are collectors items now and I have some green ones and some orange ones in mine. What do you do with yours?

I use my wooden spools to create wreaths. After gathering the spools into a circle I tie a new 120" measuring tape around the outside and create a big bow with it at the bottom. Then I attach antique sewing implements to the tops of some spools. I have made 2 so far but I gave them both away and then found out the digital photos didn't turn out!

Great ideas. I might have some, I will look. Bought a box of old notons at GW one day!

I've been saving mine for a long time, too - not that I have that many. I have what used to be my mom's and some I've had since my early sewing days. My sister-in-law collects antiques and told me to save them because they're collectors' items.

I have some but can't do anything till I get moved. I packed them and can't remember where. PM my your address and I'll get them off as soon as I can.

YLI hand quilting thread still comes on wooden spools. Kinda blew me away!

Any suggestions for the spools from the thread we buy in today's world? I've got a huge sack of those!

Which ones are more collectible than others? I have several from my grandmother and knew that I didn't want to throw them away but didn't know really what to do with them.

I still have a few. I hate to tell you all this but I threw away over a hundred of them when we downsized. I laughed about the price printed on some, like 5 cents. I had no idea they were collectable or worth anything. Woe is me.
