I was wondering if anyone has wooden spools that they want to get rid of. I collect them and have been looking for some. I just love them. Thanks so much ... Thought I would ask. Happy Holidays to all.

quilting cat 12-04-2010 11:35 AM

I keep getting them . . . Gave all I had to someone about a year ago, and have at least a dozen again! (I would NEVER throw in the trash -- they're collectors items!)
PM me you addy; I'll trade for 10" squares or a FQ!

gale 12-04-2010 11:37 AM

I've been looking at shops for them. I have some old blue ball jars with zinc lids that I love to have out and thought they'd look cute with wooden spools inside. I put some old pkgs of trim in one and spools would be cuter. lol

plainjane 12-04-2010 04:22 PM

I'm saving mine, (I have a big box full) for what I don't know yet. Just can't bear to part with them. What do you use them for?

ptquilts 12-04-2010 04:29 PM

DH turns them down on the lathe so they hold more thread. I don't let him do it to the real collectible ones though.

quiltingnonie 12-04-2010 04:37 PM

I have A LOT of them. PM me with your specifics and what you have to barter with!

martha jo 12-04-2010 04:54 PM

I have those blue jars also and some years ago, I filled one with wooden spools that still had thread and another with buttons. Then my husband drilled the lids and wired them and I have two lamps. Love them.

craftybear 12-04-2010 08:44 PM

love to see pictures of your lamps

I wish I had wooden spools. I wanted to purchase some a while back to use for decorating in the studio....no way....too expensive. I collect fabric instead!

sak658 12-04-2010 08:52 PM

I started collecting mine years ago, when they were cheap. I quit frequenting flea markets . junk stores, garage sales etc. so I haven't seen any for quite a while now.

I did this too! I was able to find a lid kit in Shipshewana several years ago and used a jar that came from my grandmother's cellar. The spools of thread came from my mother's sewing cabinet. I love my little lamp.:)

My father made us knitting knobbies out of wooden spools many years ago. I saw an idea the other day to glue ribbon or fabric on them for ornaments. Our preschool teacher uses them with yarn for coordination training and I have a friend who carves them with a Dremel tool. I have seen necklaces with painted spools and toys made by gluing them together. They are collectors items now and I have some green ones and some orange ones in mine. What do you do with yours?

I use my wooden spools to create wreaths. After gathering the spools into a circle I tie a new 120" measuring tape around the outside and create a big bow with it at the bottom. Then I attach antique sewing implements to the tops of some spools. I have made 2 so far but I gave them both away and then found out the digital photos didn't turn out!

CarrieAnne 12-05-2010 06:19 AM

Great ideas. I might have some, I will look. Bought a box of old notons at GW one day!

matraina 12-05-2010 06:25 AM

I've been saving mine for a long time, too - not that I have that many. I have what used to be my mom's and some I've had since my early sewing days. My sister-in-law collects antiques and told me to save them because they're collectors' items.

stichinluvr 12-05-2010 06:29 AM

I have some but can't do anything till I get moved. I packed them and can't remember where. PM my your address and I'll get them off as soon as I can.

117becca 12-05-2010 06:31 AM

YLI hand quilting thread still comes on wooden spools. Kinda blew me away!

illinois 12-05-2010 06:59 AM

Any suggestions for the spools from the thread we buy in today's world? I've got a huge sack of those!

luvnquilt 12-05-2010 08:19 AM

Which ones are more collectible than others? I have several from my grandmother and knew that I didn't want to throw them away but didn't know really what to do with them.

Parrothead 12-05-2010 08:26 AM

I still have a few. I hate to tell you all this but I threw away over a hundred of them when we downsized. I laughed about the price printed on some, like 5 cents. I had no idea they were collectable or worth anything. Woe is me.

jan22 12-05-2010 09:17 AM

I have a large container full. When little kids visit, I sit them down in the middle of my large braided rug and show them how to string the spools on a long piece of clothes line. I tie the first one so the next won't slide off and it keeps them busy for a while. Better than TV.

sewingsuz 12-05-2010 09:26 AM

I like these Ideas. thanks

sewingsuz 12-05-2010 09:33 AM

i use my empty today spools to wind ribbon on or bias tape or lace.

hspirit_99 12-05-2010 09:44 AM

check on ebay i saw some on there the other day. werent too expensive.

Treasureit 12-05-2010 09:56 AM

My husbands Grandfather use to make things with them...lamps, coffee table legs...who knows where those are now. I have sold them in my Etsy shop from time to time, but I am out of them. But you could look there. Etsy.com

dede 12-05-2010 10:08 AM

I was given a sack full of thread that was from a quilt store that closed years ago...some of the spools still have the price on the end ...$ .15 for some, some were expensive, $ .35. I'm saving them but was wondering how one would know the value of a spool? Several have talked about how expensive the wood spools are, what makes them expensive (besides age) and where can I find out about them? Thank you.

Homespun 12-05-2010 12:11 PM

I have a large collection also and would be interested in their worth!

sak658 12-05-2010 12:19 PM

I don't know their worth, apparently ones on E-bay must know, cause some of their's are expensive, small ones not so much. Shipping is what costs so much on there. I just want to thank everyone who has pm me with offers.
Shirley

joann hussey 12-05-2010 12:31 PM

Saving mine also, some say $.15 cents

Deezie 12-05-2010 12:42 PM

If you want to e mail me with your address I have a few I could send to you.

mac 12-05-2010 01:06 PM

I have wooden spools, too. I know the old, tall ones are valuable, but are the little ones that had regular sewing thread from a long (like our grandmothers used) are they valuable? Those are the kind I have decorating my jar lamps.

MaggieLou 12-05-2010 01:20 PM

These are worth money??? I have lots of them, mostly they still have thread on them. Guess I need to check out the prices. Anybody have any idea what they're worth?

Carol J. 12-05-2010 01:35 PM

The preschool teacher at our school takes all spools, plastic and wood for the children to string on yarn or shoestrings, teaches patience and coordination.

didn't realize there was a market for these - have a few but also collect the old metal bobbins - when I go to auctions sometimes they are just thrown into a box of sewing notions, never know the gems you will get.

Parrothead 12-05-2010 02:11 PM

Glad I kept my metal bobbins. At least! I knew they were better than plastic as I have broken a few of the plastic ones. I also found out if you buy those plastic ones that are filled, they won't fit on my bobbin winder plus they are hard to find the end of the thread. I will not buy them anymore.

tadpoles_62 12-05-2010 02:17 PM

i seen some at a garae sale not to long ago , i will call and ask about them , if you want me to , i remember it was a quart size bag of wooden spools and others . the price was $ 10.00. e-mail [email protected] .... if you are interested ,

smitty 12-05-2010 03:34 PM

I don't think any of the regular wood spools are "valuable". just that people like to collect them to fill canning jars, etc. some garage sales evidently think they are valuable !
I save them to sell at our quilt show Boutique after I have found some neat glass or wood container to place them in.
just pieces of the past !
