Would you border this quilt?

Hi,

I am trying to decide whether to put a border on this quilt. I think a border may calm it down a little.

I know it's hard to tell, but this quilt is all done in various greens. The border I would put on would be about a 5 - 6 inch border of a dark green marbled fabric. This quilt right now is 84x84. Thanks for your opinion!

Oh by the way, the pattern is Strip Twist from Bonnie Hunter's website.

Lovely Strip Twist! I think a large green border would be pretty, kind of like a frame for the top.

Gorgeous quilt. I think this quilt would definitely benefit from a border. I would be half tempted to double border. A strip the same size as what is in your quilt in a light then your dark green. But it is hard to say without first auditioning it. I love the colors in your quilt.

I agree with Tartan. A wide green border would be very nice. Wonderful Strip Twist. Great colors.

oldquilter 02-02-2014 12:31 PM

I too agree, a border would set it if. Beautiful quilt!

loisf 02-02-2014 12:33 PM

Great looking quilt. I can see why you're having trouble decided whether or not to border it. I think it looks very modern the way it is. I can picture it with simply a dark binding. Bordering it would give it a more traditional look. I would choose colors that read as solids, whatever your choice. Very nice work.

orangeroom 02-02-2014 12:36 PM

First off, it is a beautiful quilt! Second, I think it could use a border. Something dark to contain all that wonderful movement. It sure is a beauty! Nice piecing!

GrammaNan 02-02-2014 12:42 PM

I think a border would be lovely.

QuiltE 02-02-2014 12:54 PM

The best way to find out is to audition your fabric against it IRL.

I agree with LoisF ... if bordering, your fabric should be one that reads solid.

sands 02-02-2014 12:57 PM

Border will really set it off.....its very nice:thumbup:

mcdor 02-02-2014 01:09 PM

I agree, would look great with a border.

cwessel47 02-02-2014 01:11 PM

I'm for a border to contain all of that lovely work!

omacookie 02-02-2014 01:29 PM

Love all the greens. Yes, I would put a wide border of dark green on it. Happy quilting. Hugs

nygal 02-02-2014 01:58 PM

It is beautiful. I also say yes to a border.

G'ma Kay 02-02-2014 02:02 PM

I border everything. I think it helps to stabilize the edges for binding. I love your color choices. I would border it in the emerald green, and then bind it with lighter color.

carolaug 02-02-2014 02:03 PM

looks great and yup I would border it.

AnneTa 02-02-2014 02:05 PM

I think it depends on the use and the surroundings it will be in...
In a very modern house, it could do with only a dark green binding.
Otherwise, I think I would prefer a 'complex' border: dark green, not very wide, immediately around the center, then a small pale green, and then the widest strip that would be dark green again. (All rather solid-looking fabrics, but not too massive...)

Gladmaker 02-02-2014 02:13 PM

Yes, it needs a border. Binding at this stage would take off the points of your blocks all the way around.

lynnie 02-02-2014 02:18 PM

beautiful colors and design, i'd like a dark green border

QuiltnNan 02-02-2014 02:31 PM

i prefer a border, but it looks great without as well

jcrow 02-02-2014 03:22 PM

I've been wanting to make this quilt. I'm glad you showed it to us. It's so pretty. If it were mine, I would do a 5" wide solid border. Green sounds perfect. I love your quilt. I bet it was fun making it.

Boston1954 02-02-2014 04:15 PM

I think a border would set if off nicely. It would give the eyes a place to rest. This is beautifully done, by the way. Are you thinking of a single border, or maybe double?

MacThayer 02-02-2014 04:25 PM

I'm with the majority here and feel a border that appears solid would nicely show off all of the "movement" in your quilt. It's a gorgeous quilt! I think I would also bind it with the same fabric as the border is made of because my mind's eye just can't see it with a binding that stands out. It needs to match or blend with the border. IMHO.

Teddybear Lady 02-02-2014 04:29 PM

I like the colors and the pattern of your quilt. I tend to "border" things. haha I even outlined my coloring page characters with a black crayon when I was a kid.

piepatch 02-02-2014 04:50 PM

Love your strip twist quilt with or without a border! It looks perfect as is, but would probably look just as good with a border of a nice, blending color........maybe a green as some have suggested.

Jeanne S 02-02-2014 04:52 PM

Well I guess I the odd man out on this one--I would NOT put a border on it . It is a beautiful quilt with a modern feel to it and to keep with that I would just add binding, no border. I am partial to more modern quilt designs and the majority of them don't have borders. To me a border would distract from the clean geometric design lines. You did a great job on it and love the colors!!

bigsister63 02-02-2014 05:10 PM

How big do you want the quilt to be? I think it looks nice without a border if this is the size you want. If you want it to be bigger then I would add a 1" "stop" border of one of the colors in the quilt and then the wider dark green border. Show us a pic when you are done!!!! Lovely quilt!!!!

cavmom 02-02-2014 05:12 PM

love the colors! I am voting with the majority. I think a border would be nice

Gayle8675309 02-02-2014 05:43 PM

Thanks for all the opinions and the compliments.

Ok, I think I'm going to put a small (maybe 2.5) border of a medium green, then a wide border of my dark marbled green, probably 5-6 inches wide. Now to shop my stash for the medium green! :)

That would make the quilt about 100x100 if my math is correct, that's a good sized queen quilt.

terri bb 02-02-2014 05:50 PM

i agree with you on your border selection! i would make it a large border as well. i love the way this turned out!

tessagin 02-02-2014 05:52 PM

Yeah this is good. Great looking quilt!

That is beautiful! I think a green border would be perfect!

tyoung 02-02-2014 08:47 PM

Beautiful! I love the strip twist. I think a border or two would be a nice addition.

twinkie 02-03-2014 04:22 AM

I would lay different fabrics beside it and see which I liked.

marymay 02-03-2014 04:29 AM

Yes I would put a border on your beautiful quilt. The green will frame it like a picture.

lclang 02-03-2014 04:38 AM

I prefer borders. It's like framing a picture, gives it a finished look!

Zinda 02-03-2014 04:52 AM

Beautiful quilt. I think a border would be a wonderful frame for your beautiful work.

Sandra-P 02-03-2014 05:17 AM

Beautiful quilt! Yes, it need borders, maybe two. I would do a Stonehenge then maybe a solid? Very nice.

This is mine done in black and white with piano key border.

linmid 02-03-2014 05:58 AM

Unless you need it to be larger I would not. It looks like a work of art love your colors and the placement. Great job!!
