How many people buy extra yards when they don't need it to finish their project?
Joan

Murphy 10-19-2011 08:19 AM

I do!

Katia 10-19-2011 08:20 AM

I do too. I am so afraid I won't have enough.

JanetP 10-19-2011 08:21 AM

I do.

MamaQuilter 10-19-2011 08:22 AM

I definitely do, you just never know if you will cut something wrong and need more fabric. :)

ditto
or for when the pattern has it planned out nip and tuck for quantities
or for when I decide to make a change to the original pattern, fabric A instead of B etc.
or when I want it to be a little larger!
or ... or ... or ... or ....

Of course, there's a limit as to HOW MUCH extra!

dakotamaid 10-19-2011 08:29 AM

Depends on what pattern/color it is and how much it costs.:)

quilt addict 10-19-2011 08:30 AM

It depends on how much I like the fabric. But I usually will add a smudge for the mistakes I make cutting it seems all the time.

blueangel 10-19-2011 08:33 AM

I'm afraid so

QuiltnLady1 10-19-2011 08:36 AM

I always add 1/4yd over what a pattern says I need -- more if I like the fabric. If I am simply buying randome fabric I tend to buy enough to make uncut borders.

That said, I have been trying to be good so I only picked up the extra 1/4yd for a piece of Halloween fabric I needed -- now I need more and it is gone. Sigh. :(

QuiltE 10-19-2011 08:38 AM

Another reason ..... to allow for the change in yardage, when it shrinks in the pre-wash!

And as I often say ... it's for my inventory aka stash! :)

QuiltnNan 10-19-2011 08:39 AM

me too

bluteddi 10-19-2011 08:43 AM

not me.. I buy only what i think I need.. unless DH is with me.. then he tells them to cut double of what ever I ask for... he knows me so well... and is my enabler!!! LOL

dunster 10-19-2011 08:44 AM

I buy for stash, not for a specific project, so it's all extra yardage. :)

PamB8s 10-19-2011 08:45 AM

ALWAYS, that is how we get "stash".

Deborah12687 10-19-2011 08:52 AM

I do for sure...been there to many times of not having enough fabric and finding out the fabric is no longer availble. I always buy an extra 6 inches. If I don't use it I have that much more to add to my scrap tote. When I get enough scrap I sew them into scrappy quilts.

Zhillslady 10-19-2011 09:12 AM

I don't normally but I have had patterns where I wondered if the designer had ties the fabric companines. I have made 2 just in the last couple of months that the fabric requirements were considerably more than what I needed to make the top.

crafty pat 10-19-2011 09:15 AM

I do. I have come up short in the past and do not want to be caught short again.

Bobby's Girl 10-19-2011 09:32 AM

I DO! Otherwise, I wouldn't have 6 plastic tubs and some cardboard boxes chock full of fabric to enjoy looking through, unfolding and refolding, reorganizing into a new storage system I've thought up, transferring from one location to another, etc. It's a GOOD thing, though. And among quilters, I don't think I'd stand out as a weird-o. lol

Glassquilt 10-19-2011 09:58 AM

I do.

mine does the same thing

scraphq 10-19-2011 10:23 AM

I do. I need the extra for my stash.

Lori S 10-19-2011 10:29 AM

I do ...as my paranoia about running out runs deep after getting to the final part of a project and not having enough to finish. All it took was once ... and it is permanently ingrained in my memory. I get that anxious feeling about running out every time I start a planned quilt

My fondness for scrap quilts has grown as there is no danger of me ever running out.

Honeynga 10-19-2011 10:30 AM

Growing up my foster mother made almost all of my clothes and she wanted to squeeze out every inch she could and sometimes, actually often times, she would either be short fabric and have to make it up other places; like in seams or hems......when I grew up and starting buying and sewing I always buy a little extra just to be sure ! If the pattern called for 1-1/2 yards she would buy 1-1/4 yd.....and actually she never saved money that way because whatever she made was skimpy......no seams to let out or hems to lengthen....she was raised during the depression and that explains a lot....

ON THE OTHER HAND, she was the sweetest most loving caring person in the whole world...to take in a 3 year old when she and her husband were in their late 40's and raise me with so much love and caring....so what if she was a 1/4 yd short here or there !

new2q 10-19-2011 10:35 AM

I always round up and sometimes add a little more. I make a lot of mistakes.....Measuring, cutting...you name it

jaciqltznok 10-19-2011 11:59 AM

I only get about 1/2 yd. extra..especially with prices of today fabric..YIKES

EdieClay 10-19-2011 12:16 PM

I always get at least 1 yard of everything (if pattern calls for 3/4 yd, I get 1 yd). If it is near the end of the bolt, I'll get the rest. I have gone to that extra fabric many times to finish a quilt. Plus I just love having the fabric on hand!

mic-pa 10-19-2011 12:19 PM

Always, never want to run out. Besides, it builds my stash

Jennifer22206 10-19-2011 12:23 PM

always. I've been caught short a few times, and I hate that feeling. :) It's a much better feeling knowing that I have more than I really need

Project? We're supposed to do a project with fabric that we buy? I buy for the stash .... for the collection .... for the fabriholic in me .....

ube quilting 10-19-2011 02:16 PM

I do

DeeDee1280 10-19-2011 02:21 PM

I buy 2 yards of each fabric for the top and I have only made 3 lap quilts. I have TONS extra but it makes my stash look better LOL I found a pattern I liked but it was for a larger size and I just wanted to be sure I had plenty

sewbeadit 10-19-2011 02:34 PM

my hand is up too, anything is an excuse for me to buy fabric!

luckylindy333 10-19-2011 02:35 PM

I never plan ahead, so I never know how much I am going to need. Planning is not fun for me, so I skip to the fun part. Besides, if I do try to figure out how much fabric I need, I am usually wrong, so I just buy extra!

Aurora 10-20-2011 02:17 AM

Who doesn't? I always have, but know people who did not and now they do. Experience is such a great teacher.

Little Sue 4.9 10-20-2011 02:40 AM

I do especially if I like/love the fabric.

alikat110 10-20-2011 03:07 AM

depends on my bank account

stitchengramie 10-20-2011 03:11 AM

I do! Just in case I make a mistake when I cut my fabric pieces out, and for shrinkage. Or just because I love the fabric.

Moonglow 10-20-2011 03:11 AM

I do, just in case.....!!!
