You know you are a quilter when.......

You will iron ten yards of fabric but not the family laundry

You plan your vacation around quilt shows or quilt shops

You feel your "stash" to calm yourself in stressful times

You "see" quilts in things all around you

Please add your own.

You know you are a quilter when.......

You see someone wearing a gorgeous print, and wonder if you can borrow their clothing (or have it when they're done) because it is just the right pattern/color/shade to go in your quilt.

 I have actually done this

mpeters1200 05-19-2007 12:11 PM

Moonpi: I've done the SAME thing.

You know you are a quilter when:

someone announces a little addition to the family coming in nine months and you immediately start going through your pattern stash to find just the right one for the new baby.

You know you are a quilter when:

It takes you the whole nine months to pick the pattern, fabric and actually complete the darn thing! (And all the parents have to worry about is the name!)

patricej 05-19-2007 12:26 PM

when your 27 year old son is still waiting for his high school graduation quilt. :!:

...When you will gladly clean and organize your sewing room for hours if necessary, but can only "allow" 15 or 20 minutes for mopping the floors in the rest of the house.

...When you lay down at night with a million things from the day causing you to toss, turn, & worry and your saving grace is the calm thinking of a fantasy fabric shopping adventure brings to your restless mind.

... You go through your house and wonder what else would look good quilted- couch pillows, seat cushions, etc...

rvquilter 05-19-2007 02:12 PM

You spend hours online looking for just the right pattern. :D

SandraJennings 05-19-2007 02:40 PM

You know you are a quilter when....the seasons new styles don't work but you love the wonderful colors and patterns.

ceannastahr 05-19-2007 02:48 PM

You know your a quilter when ... you tell your child its time to get their own place because you need their room too for your stash

patricej 05-19-2007 04:39 PM

omigosh!!! please don't tell my son i said that, too.

i always tell him as long as i have a home so does he. but if i had to give his room back to him i don't know what i'd do! ROFLBO

ceannastahr 05-19-2007 06:09 PM

Been there Carla. I wonder if dust bunnies could be used for batting? Hummmmmm!!!!!! Now that's an idea.

Carla P 05-21-2007 04:09 AM

  I'm not sure but when I can allow a couple of extra minutes to gather a few I'll let you know...

ceannastahr 05-21-2007 04:12 AM

I can't keep them still long enough to catch them. But bet the lint in the dryer trap would work better so thick and soft

Carla P 05-21-2007 04:18 AM

Honestly, I did wonder about that... but only once... & no, I didn't try it... it fell apart before I made it to my sewing room...  j/k Sometimes you'd love to though!! :D I do place used dryer sheets in with my fabric stash for a couple of days on occasion, just to give them a hint of the fresh smell.

That reminds me of a quilt show a few years ago. A lady there had a sewing machine that had about maybe 8 or more needles. Using no thread at all she took different colored dryer lint and sewed the lint right onto plain white muslin. The machine needles actually pressed the lint into the fab creating a soft suttle hue. It was very pretty but expensive. Anyone else seen this? What's it called?

Carla P 05-21-2007 04:22 AM

Wool felting machine...

Debbie Murry 05-21-2007 04:25 AM

Thanks Carla. I wondered tho how well it washed afterwards. I'd hate to do all that work and then have all my lint go down the drain.

Carla P 05-21-2007 04:37 AM

They say the wool, yarns & such hold up pretty well to the process, but I agree with you... that would be awful for everything to end up right back where it started from... which would be my luck!

Leslee 05-21-2007 06:57 AM

Debbie, I think what she had was a needle felting machine. The needles use no thread, they just pounce up and down and whatever they go through (felt, yarn, roving, etc) bonds to bottom material. You can do this by hand without a machine. Clover (for one) sells the pouncing needles and pad. It's a fun stress reliever and like you wrote, very pretty :-)

This might be what you are talking about. Hope it helps. 8) Betty

Debbie Murry 05-21-2007 07:52 AM

Thanks Betty I believe that's it. I guess it can be washed.

Debbie Murry 05-21-2007 08:12 AM

You know you're a quilter when you're sitting on the toilet at a restruant looking down at the floor tile and thinking "that would make a pretty block" and then do a rubbing with paper towels and a pencil. Been there.

Carla P 05-21-2007 08:59 AM

Good one Debbie!!!!

Boo 05-21-2007 09:24 AM

Debbie, that's a winner. You definately are a quilter! ROFLMBO

Debbie Murry 05-21-2007 09:29 AM

Thank you Boo. I'm glad to make you laugh today but it's a true story.

coffeewoman 05-21-2007 10:59 AM

Actually, I have seen a variation of this in the last Nancy's Notions catalogue... sounds like a version of felting to me...

quiltmaker101 05-21-2007 12:08 PM

My son knows he can never move back in. His room is now my sewing room - even got rid of the spare bed.

And you know you're a quilter when you are kissing your husband and you see quilts behind your closed eyes.

So much for romance! That's pathetic isn't it?

mpeters1200 05-21-2007 12:43 PM

Debbie...I'm sure you are not alone. While I have never had her confess to me that she took a rubbing of the tile, I knew someone who carries around a little note pad in her purse for just such occasions when she is otherwise "indisposed" and sees what would be a neat pattern!!

Now Wendy... We would never do such things... Uh, would we Ladies?? I'm SURE it was AFTER you kissed him bye, but as you were shutting the door... Right??

My Pastor says confession is good for the soul, but bad for the reputation... At times such as this my reputation ups in value to me...

ceannastahr 05-21-2007 02:53 PM

I got rid of everything when he left 5 years ago but he brough it back new stuff.

mpeters1200 05-21-2007 04:31 PM

You know you are a quilter when you live in a 3 bedroom house by yourself; One bedroom for you, one for your sewing room, and one chucked full of boxes and boxes of quilting magazines of all the projects you want to do someday.

Actually knew a lady like that.

3incollege 05-22-2007 03:09 AM

Debbie-It is called a felting needle. Viking makes them. they also have a machine that does just that, but I don't know if the dust bunnies would work.
You know you are a quilter when... your non-quilting freinds better learn to quilt or else.............

gaquilter 05-22-2007 04:56 AM

You sneak your little featherweight in the car on family vacation.

mpeters1200 05-22-2007 05:57 AM

....when you insist on stopping at every small and large fabric stores just to make sure they don't have something you need.

I remember taking a trip to California with my husband. Boy did he gripe at me. But I did find out that not all JoAnn's, Hancock's and WalMarts (at the time) had the exact same fabric available.

SandraJennings 05-22-2007 08:51 AM

you know when.....your wish list is simple......fabric! And....what better inspiration than kisses from your love to inspire yet another quilt? Isn't that where they come from......or maybe that was the smell of coffee...bread baking....snowfall....brb....got another idea!
:D

mpeters1200 05-22-2007 10:51 AM

lol

vicki reno 05-22-2007 11:59 AM

I can think of a few that I'd love to pounce with those needles! I just saw a pattern in a new mag about making a wall hanging like that. Not with people but with those needles. LOL

LMAO! I've actually done that!

Flying_V_Goddess 05-22-2007 08:24 PM

Let's see...

You know you're a quilter if...

*You have been able to gain inspiration for a quilt from one or more of the following:
--Video games
--Japanese anime shows
--Horror movies
--Heavy metal bands

*Your friend, who had a C-Section, tells you that the doctor sewed her up using a blind hem stitch because she knows you'll find that information very interesting.

*The lady who usually cuts fabric at Wal-Mart jokes about how many times this week she's has had to cut fabric for you and laughs a little when you say "I promise this will be the last time for this week!"

*You have at least three Yahoo! Image Searches on your favorites that involve quilting. Even more so if each of them are from the same search (like for "quilt" for example), but each link shows results for a certain image size (one link for wallpaper sized images, another for medium sized images, etc).

Debbie Murry 05-23-2007 03:33 AM

Goddess we must have been in the same restruant. And by the way I have about 30 engine searches and 15 of those have a shortcut on my desktop. Can't wait those 5 seconds to get there.
