I decided I would do a drunkards path today. I finished one block...I will not say how many times I used my seam ripper or wondered....what the heck was I thinking....curves...Oh well...here I go again. How about you..are you willing to try something outside your comfort zone?

It can be nerve racking learning a new pattern, but once you've done a few blocks you'll relax. Like your colors.

sweetana3 11-03-2012 03:38 AM

I have started a top that has embroidery, applique, yoyos and piecing. I always get to the applique and stall so now I will continue and maybe make it.

I am also working on a Shoji Screen quilt which has diagonal piecing. So far so good.

QuiltnNan 11-03-2012 03:45 AM

when i started my dear janes, i was definitely outside my comfort zone. hope to get back to them soon.
your blocks look great!

woody 11-03-2012 03:49 AM

Oh Yes!!!! I love working outside my comfort zone LOL I never do things by halves, a queen sized bargello was one of my first quilts, I had never done needleturn applique and I am half way through the 36 blocks of the Affairs of the Heart quilt, and now I thought I would give a miniature quilt a go, each 4 1/2" finished block has 76 pieces (yes I must be crazy LOL)
Never let fear hold you back!!!!!!

winia 11-03-2012 04:01 AM

I did a paper pieced double wedding ring bed runner. Way out of my comfort zone. Hand quilted it also. I actually enjoyed doing it because it was outside of my comfort zone. I did it one step at a time. At some point I finally began to see what the finished product would look like.

I did Drunkard's Path place mats. Came out nice. It's a lovely look. You'll love it when it's done.

franc36 11-03-2012 04:38 AM

I'm taking Leah Day's FMQ Craftsy class. That is definitely outside my comfort zone; but I am excited about what I am learning. Your Drunkard's Path looks lovely. I like your first block and the colors you selected. Best wishes as you work on it.

quilts4charity 11-03-2012 05:28 AM

I do like to work outside the normal zone once in a while...makes me use my brain a little more...LOL. Your quilt is going to be awesome...beautiful colors!!!!

Tartan 11-03-2012 05:37 AM

Your layout and finished block looks great. I was sewing a simple snowball block with borders today, how much easier can you get? Well I managed to have to rip it apart twice!

cowgirlquilter 11-03-2012 05:38 AM

Wow I admire you. I have not really tried anything new but really allow it is new when you are in the newbie mode!

DogHouseMom 11-03-2012 05:50 AM

I almost always work outside my comfort zone. My collection of quilting books is more a collection of techniques than it is a book of patterns. I've tried most of them, but not all of them yet.

I've not done circles yet.

lfletcher 11-03-2012 06:14 AM

I love your fabrics and by the time you get finished with the top, you'll be a pro at curved piecing. It gets much easier with practice. I bought a long arm about a year ago, so most things I quilt are now out of my comfort zone. However, I like the challenge and am enjoying trying all kinds of different things from pantos to custom.

wolph33 11-03-2012 06:17 AM

looks great.yes,I go outside my comfort zone every now and then-yours is beautiful so far.

Kathy T. 11-03-2012 06:23 AM

That is going to be beautiful - it's gorgeous already - nice work outside your comfort zone (I'm still in mine...).

BellaBoo 11-03-2012 06:28 AM

When I'm feeling piecing ambitious I cut and sew one block at a time. If it is a disaster I don't mind tossing one block in the trash.

carolaug 11-03-2012 09:13 AM

Leah is AWESOME...she is the one who taught me how to FMQ and also she was the reason why I bought my 7700 sewing machine....no regrets!!! You will learn a lot from her!

slicksister 11-03-2012 09:24 AM

Nope. Not wanting to get out of my comfort zone at all. I've found my style and colors I love and I am deeply happy in that rut! LOL

Kitsie 11-03-2012 09:25 AM

Love the fabrics!! You're doing great! Think how proud you will feel when its completed.

RedGarnet222 11-03-2012 10:56 AM

Starching twice is a wonderful thing when dealing with those type of curves and bias edges. That being said, I love what you are doing here. Keep up the good work carollaug. You are doing great!

While learning to machine quilt, I am in a constant state of learning. I not only want to quilt, but to also stabilize and enhance my top's designs. It is something that takes patience, practice and skill. Something I am not good at (having patience) LOL... I suppose it is all a process that must eventually be learned if we want a lovely finished quilt that is. So far I have read four books on machine quilting and quilted about 40 quilts and smaller projects. I am still not where I want to be yet.

No...I will not stop working on this...if I out it away it will not come out for a long time..I did that to one of my other projects, my only unfinished project....with one block left...its been in the box for a year...I know why I like quick projects cause I can get them done....I have working on thus since 4am....cut the pieces and now sewing them. No too fun...but I do like the looks of it.

I've done a drunkards path before and it was WAY out of my comfort zone. I just kept going. It wasn't perfect and I didn't fuss with it. The next one I did, I raw edged the smaller pieces onto the larger one so the one layer frayed. I clipped the edges around it and washed it right away. That way was much easier and I love the soft look it gave to it. I just love the fabrics you are using and your quilt will be so worth it after you finish it. It's beautiful so far.

lynnie 11-03-2012 04:48 PM

Its coming out beautiful..and dont worry, as they say...it will quilt out.
i go outside my comfort zone all the time. My dh can attest to that, thats why im gettin french doors on my sewing room.
maybe i should soundproof while at it.

Bneighbor 11-03-2012 04:58 PM

I once belonged to an online quilt club, something like this forum. They had an idea where they had you challenge yourself, do something put of your comfort zone. Very small wall quilts or just a few blocks. My challenge was two fold. I am a "matchy-matchy girl" (in their terminology....everything has to match and coordinate). So I chose 42 four inch squares of the most ugliest fabrics ever created. Then did the drunkards path square...cutting the "pie" and the "crust" from each square of fabric . Putting each half into different bags, shaking them, then pulling a crust and a pie and sewing them together. Two very hard things to do....creating curves from fabric that didn't go together and making it work. I am so proud of how it turned out. It hangs on my dining room wall.
I love the colors you chose. Look forward to seeing the finished product

oooooh! that's sewww pretty.

Scraplady 11-03-2012 06:05 PM

I enjoy a good challenge. They day I'm too old too learn something new, just put me out to pasture already. Curved piecing is definitely on my quilting bucket list, and hey, that bucket is full to the brim and sloshing over! It's been fun to watch your project coming together.

busy fingers 11-03-2012 07:20 PM

Good on you for trying a new technique. The blocks are looking great.

Pickles 11-03-2012 07:45 PM

Yes my very first quilt ever I did a queen size Kaleidescope and that was really out of my comfort zone!!
Your Blocks are looking great, keep up the good work it will be well worth all the ripping in the end!!!

carolaug 11-04-2012 01:10 AM

What a neat idea! I would love to see a picture of the quilt you made!

I have been watching the free crafty BOM this morning...finishing the quilt. I did not make the quilt, but I did do a few and made a quilt - I made the string block - quite a few...that is my favorite block. I also tried a few of the other blocks. Now seeing if I can get any tips for finishing the quilt.

carolaug 11-04-2012 06:27 PM

Yah...I just finished all of the curved pieces!!!! Good night ladies!

wendyleequilts 11-05-2012 05:25 AM

Good for YOU! As a teacher, I am all for people learning new things and fighting thru the challenge. I love your colors. They look lovely.

coopah 11-05-2012 05:32 AM

I like to try new things, but the Double Wedding Ring (pieced, not applique), has me back to simple, easy patterns for awhile!

BeckyB 11-05-2012 05:39 AM

I am fairly new to quilting...everything is out of my comfort zone! Love your color choices

oooooooo very pretty

ccthomas 11-05-2012 06:03 AM

Yes, I find many of my UFO's are because I reach one of those out of my comfort zones. I STOP, sometimes I am able to sleep on it and figure it out, or I do additional research either with tutorials, you tubes, this site, more books, and often it stays patiently, waiting for me to grasp that step so I can move forward. (Also, my seam ripper.) (It would be nice to have a Mom, Grandmother at that time) Love your colors and values.

maviskw 11-05-2012 06:10 AM

Now you've got me excited to try a Drunkard's Path.
