This can be quite serious ! We went through a tornado once, and the insurance wanted quite the detailed list, not fun

heheh If my DW only KNEW how much fabric I have she would kill me!!!
PS: DW= Darling Wife |
OMG! I read this to my DH, then he looked at me and asked how much I had invested. Then I asked myself, what the @$%! was I thinking!? I told him the truth, and said $8-10 grand, less than his Harley I reminded him, and since I had 99% of it before we got married last June, there wasnt a whole lot he could say!

How could a price be put onto my therapy?
Part of the comfort is the knowledge that it is readily available. Seriously though, I should take an inventory and come up with an estimate. ROFLOL. |
It's not just my fabric that has the high dollar attached. It's books and tools too. I have a collection of out of print quilt books that are outrageously priced on Ebay. I didn't pay that much and never will. Most of the vintage books I found for .50 to a $1 at Goodwill over the years. I found most of the newer OOP books at yard sales or basement book sell outs. Not many people think an old quilt book is worth anything. I printed out several sold bids and Abe Books prices for each OOP book for insurance purposes. My DDs know the value of my quilting items and what to save and what to give away.
|
LOL....oh my, that is all so funny!! course my husband doesn't say much cause he spends quite abit on his hobbies so I am safe on that, but insurance... ummm that is a good thing to do as there is WAY over what you told him!!!!
|
LOL, you all are so funny.
To be fair to DH, I asked him later if he was "upset" and he said not at all just "shocked" at how much fabric cost he honestly had no idea. He knows it's my hobby and he has his (golf), we aren't in any debt over it, and I quilt almost everyday so he knows I truly use the fabric it's not wasted...I kept my mouth shut about all the UFOs I have made from said fabric and the fact I have more than I'll ever use in 3 lifetimes. Tanesha |
It seem that an on going inventory and pics will need to be concidered. Then keep it in a disaster proof safe.

I can't stop laughing at this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Anytime I begin to feel a little guilty, I think of the toys in the garage. Let's see a yard of fabric, average $6.00, a Harley, $22,000.....I better get shopping........
|
This made me think, too.
I just gave a quick count of my fat quarters 37 stacks at an average of 20 FQ's per stack at just $1 per FQ is $740. That is only 1 1/2 shelves of fabric. I have 10 more shelves of fabric from 1/2 yard to several yards each and WIP's. 3 sewing machines etc. I have a friend who said I am a baby beginner. I helped her move. I AM a baby beginner. Oh, I forgot what is stored elsewhere. |
lol
|
I dont even want to know howmuch Ihave spent, lol!
|
Thanks for the reminder. We have DH's guns insured but not my sewing machines and fabric. Must correct that. :)
|
Hilarious! THEY HAVE NO CLUE! Which is a good thing; except in cases like THIS! :-P
|
 I love it. |
I just added up my fabric receipts for the last year, and it came to just over $708. Considering that I had a very sizeable stash before that, and that we're getting to the point that I may need to remove furniture from my office to accomodate the hoard, I think I will try to halve that this year. Jeez, there's probably over 10 grand in fabric and machines and furniture down there. I may need to toddle off to the insurance agents soon!
|
Needed a laugh tonight.
You could have added - but it has just GRADUALLY built up over the past 5 years - so only a little per month and the sales come quicker than I can sew - and I only buy when it is on sale so it really is a saving. Huummmm.....doesn't work for me either! |
Yikes! I hear ya sister! And feel your turmoil...I too had to 'come clean' in my presentation to DH about my business dream- the cost of all of it---fabrics, notions, longarm quilting services and even the retreats! But, it got me what I have now- an awesome new business- a longarm quilting studio and retreat! Moonlight Stitching Studio & Sisters Retreat

I am so lucky hat DH is ok with what I spend on fabric and he wasn't surprised when I read your post. I haven't tallied up what I have but it fills a room!

It's a very funny story but one with a message, how many of you have thought about your quilting tools, machines n stash when renewing your Home Contents Insurance :-o
I very nearly had a nasty accident with my Elna, cost with extras approx. £1000/$1500 and there is no way that I could find the money to replace it so I added, at a nominal cost Accidental Insurance coverage on my Home Content. I had a long chat with my Insurance to make sure my stash/tools/machines were covered, even to the extent of having them covered whilst being moved for classes, so at least I now have an easier mind that way. Cost of quilting since I started Jan 2005 over £7000/$1100 enjoyment invaluable and no Insurance will cover that. :-P |
What DH does not know will not hurt ME!
|
I am not even going there!!!!!!!!

So my husband and I are currently getting quotes on home insurance. While on the phone with the agent, I learned our previous policy, which DH got without me really paying attention to the itemizations, had my all of my quilting fabric listed as approx. $100 value. DH turned to me and said, "Well this policy is about 5 years old, and I know you've bought more since then. What would you say it's at now, $200? $250?" I just looked at him blankly while my mind raced...tell him the TRUTH? Egads!?!?! I mean, I am normally all for 100% honesty in a relationship, but this is surely an exception to that rule? It pained me, it really did, but since this is for insurance purposes and I know it will just come back to somehow bite me in the butt if I don't tell the honest amount (i.e. flood in basement where fabric is, fire, etc...) I told him "try closer to $2,000-$3,000 and that's being conservative." He and the agent (male/non-quilter obviously) were speechless. Now I have to send him pictures and any receipts I may still have to prove it, LOL. Just thought I'd share that funny story with you all....so how much would your sig. other say your stash is worth? What's the "real" $ amount? :) Tanesha |
Please remember quilters, that, if your insurance replaces items lost, the true value is what it would cost to re-buy,today,at regular price, not what you paid for it on sale.So...your stash is worth alot more than you think..
|
Oh my. What a question to be asked. And then there's the "gadgets". I would be speechless. I got in about $100 worth of thread this week alone, just thread.
|
food for thought--fabric doesn't depreciate--it goes UP in value the longer you have it...
|
Some years ago there was an article in the newspaper about a man arrested for growing pot. The sheriff was quoted as saying that he was under suspicion because he bought $4000 worth of gardening supplies and "no one spends that much on a hobby"
I became fearful because if that is the criteria for suspicion of criminal activity they would soon be coming after me! LOL I pictured the jails filled with quilters trying to hold their machines & fabrics in their arms. LOL |
This is too funny. Ask him how much his tools or computer, etc are worth...
|
My friend just had her condo destroyed by a hot water leak from the second floor. Furniture, art work, old books, new books, carpet, family photos all were ruined. She's had to itemize all her losses to get reimbursed and it's been a NIGHTMARE!! So don't underestimate the value of your stash - and YES - include machine cost to replace, LA cost ro replace, scissors, patterns etc. If something awful happens, you'll NEED that information!

Thanks for sharing your story because I had never thought about insuring all my fabric and machine.
