Sad day when you have to 'fess up' to your husband about how much fabric you REALLY have and what it costs....

So my husband and I are currently getting quotes on home insurance. While on the phone with the agent, I learned our previous policy, which DH got without me really paying attention to the itemizations, had my all of my quilting fabric listed as approx. $100 value. DH turned to me and said, "Well this policy is about 5 years old, and I know you've bought more since then. What would you say it's at now, $200? $250?" I just looked at him blankly while my mind raced...tell him the TRUTH? Egads!?!?! I mean, I am normally all for 100% honesty in a relationship, but this is surely an exception to that rule?

It pained me, it really did, but since this is for insurance purposes and I know it will just come back to somehow bite me in the butt if I don't tell the honest amount (i.e. flood in basement where fabric is, fire, etc...) I told him "try closer to $2,000-$3,000 and that's being conservative." He and the agent (male/non-quilter obviously) were speechless. Now I have to send him pictures and any receipts I may still have to prove it, LOL.

Just thought I'd share that funny story with you all....so how much would your sig. other say your stash is worth? What's the "real" $ amount? :)

lol i have no idea what he would guess, but i'm proud of my sales hunting skills. I have a ton of stuff to do -- i'm actually working on finishing all of my "to-do" projects that are stashed in my bins.

My quilting stuff isn't on his insurance, lol, but my jewelry is!

charismah 01-03-2011 11:34 AM

Do I count my long arm?

luvTooQuilt 01-03-2011 11:35 AM

that's funny.. I keep all my receipts anyway for anything quilting related.. Hubby figures it out at the end of the year for tax purposes.. I know I spend ALOT of $ on fabric and quilting supplies almost weekly but so far, he has not complained.. my guess is his hobbies are just as expensive.. So no changing habits here anytime soon!!

ann clare 01-03-2011 11:35 AM

You are brave. I would not confess. When asked I say "you would prefer not to know". Set me thinking though. What with fabric, batting, thread, needles, notions, machines etc. A lot of money was spent.

plainjane 01-03-2011 11:37 AM

How can you explain that to a non quilter! :) A tool stash would never need an explaination. :) I never keep receipts and would be hard pressed to come up with a $ value. I am lucky (encourages me to buy) as my DH is usually with me at every purchase and knows the price of fabrics. I know it would be a chore, but pics would go a long way for itemizing-I shudder at the thought :) AND the value goes up with a finished quilt!

mimom 01-03-2011 11:37 AM

oh, that was funny, I needed a good laugh. :)

mrspete 01-03-2011 11:40 AM

For this moment in life, it is nice being single, hhahahaaha oh my. "fessing up" would give me hives.

Blessings to you all,
Ruth

I hadn't even thought about insuring my quilting stuff. Probably need to look into that. My other addiction besides fabric is shoes. My hubby had no idea how many shoes I had until my closet flooded and I had to pull all of my shoes out while he helped me. He just shook his head.

suebee 01-03-2011 11:41 AM

OMGosh! tooo darn funny. Im sorry you were put in that position. LOL

You most definitely do...especially because it is used for your "quilting business".

suebee 01-03-2011 11:46 AM

Dang, gotta hate when that happens!! BUSTED!!! lol WHOA, sorry...meant to replay to KJDavis response.

frugalfabrics 01-03-2011 11:47 AM

I would never confess it outloud to anyone...lol. If my house ever burned down or something terrible like that, I would just buy more fabric and less kitchen accessories!...since I don't cook much anymore these days.

ddddd 01-03-2011 11:50 AM

great story. lol.

cjomomma 01-03-2011 11:53 AM

Oh Gosh! That reminds me that we need to up date our renters policy. I didn't have all this stash when first got the insurance. I think I had 1 tub of fabric but I am far from that now. LOL!!!!

Ladyjanedoe 01-03-2011 12:03 PM

I suspect that would be an uncomfortable situation :)

mic-pa 01-03-2011 12:07 PM

I have no idea about fabric, never save the reciepts but I am sure I have $12,000 worth of sewing machine and equipment. Guess I better check with my ins. agent and see if they are covered.

winterfun 01-03-2011 12:15 PM

LOL! My DH so knows what I spend on sewing! He doesn't say anything to me about how much I spend as long as I don't say anything about how much he spends on the harley! To make our situation funny is my mother who knows what my long arm etc cost as she was with me when I bought it is our insurance agent! She has no problem with how much my stuff is worth but has a hard time with how much money he has put into the harley and just like me having more then one sewing machine he has more then one harley. Guess we both have $$$ hobbies.

Tootsie 01-03-2011 12:21 PM

What a funny story! I think I would have sweetly said to my DH "My fabric? Oh, it's worth about the same as your gun collection" LOL!

Lady Crafter 01-03-2011 12:47 PM

True Story .... I was on an AOL quilting forum "way back when." One of the members and her family were moving back to the cold north from the warmer south (job related). Hubby told her that they just would NOT have room for "all that fabric and stuff." Sooooo .... she got some large 32 gallon plastic trash cans, marked on them "Kids boots and winter coats/clothes." Her fabric was moved back north with no question!!!

Barbm 01-03-2011 12:53 PM

anything of value should be included on your insurance with a rider. It's a small price to pay if you suffer a loss. My crystal collection is valued at $4k but only added $50 a year to my policy. I'd be really ticked off if someone broke in and stole it or smashed it.

Now my fabric- I guess I better start looking at adding another rider- it has some value. 18 tubs of fabric x $200 worth of fabric in it. Plus the machine I bought last year- $3700.00. Yes, better call my insurance agent. We keep our collector cars insured properly, I should do the same with my "collection".

Thanks for the reminder.

chris_quilts 01-03-2011 12:56 PM

Gotta say: DH may some idea of the amount of stash I have but very little idea as to its worth or the worth of the machines he knows about. :) My mom and sister were shocked when I casually told them, b/c they asked, how many sewing machines I have and that I use almost all of them. I have 8 and 6 are vintage ones. Now my DM collects records and CDs and I don't know about my sister. I suspect she doesn't collect much of anything besides pictures of her grandsons. Neither of them could see any value in the vintage machines - I feel sorry for them. I need to check with ins. company about the quilting stuff but it had never crossed my mind. No receipts of course.

Airwick156 01-03-2011 01:10 PM

My husband doesnt complain about what I spend on fabric and sewing supplies. I only have onesewing machine and its a brother 2600 we bought at walmart back in January 2006. I h ave only been sewing anything since 2002 and my first project was a dress shirt for my husband. My sister walked me through it and then I turned around and made him over 40 shirts with various fabric patterns that he chose.
My husband collects movies. SERIOUSLY collects movies. Right now he probably has 1500 DVD movies in my living room, not counting the 2000 or more VHS's hes got in storage. So this is how I figure, if he can spend $100 bucks a month on movies, I should be able to spend the same amount on fabric right? Well, I don't. I love to quilt, but I havent the patience to walk around the store to chose fabric. So that means I rarely add to my stash, but my new years resolution is this....Every time I go to the store for the first 6 months of the year, I am going to buy 2 yards of ONE FABRIC and try to build a stash. Right now I have a nice stash of black and white fabrics and a few odds and end peices. :)

sall 01-03-2011 01:23 PM

Having read this post, I have never worked out how much I spend on my quilting in a year. So I have decided that I am going to keep a tab for all the fabric and quilting supplies that I buy this year.

Patty Patches 01-03-2011 01:23 PM

My dh would probably die if he knew how much my fabric is worth.I;m not gonna tell him, what he doesnt know wont hurt him.he-he

Furza Flyin 01-03-2011 01:28 PM

How do you put a price on joy, contentment, and that one little slice of heaven???

tellabella 01-03-2011 01:37 PM

Never thought about insuring the quilting fabric, etc...I have 9 sewing machines plus fabrics...etc...wow...I would hate to lose it...

Janetd 01-03-2011 01:42 PM

That's pretty funny! I needed that! Just can't put a value on my little sewing room. Would you put the scissors at $25 retail value or probably the $15 you actually paid for them? Tooooooooooo funny!!!!

tjradj 01-03-2011 02:08 PM

What a great memory jogger! Thanks.
I recently added a $3000 Janome Horizon to my collection. And an Inspira frame.
And if I had to replace my fabric stash today - it would cost thousands.
Insurance is there for the emergencies. You never know when you're going to need it.
For instance, this summer, my freezer quit. It was covered by my house insurance - but only the contents. And that gave me $600 for a small 11 cu ft freezer. Not including the price for replacing the freezer. The agent sent a cheque no questioned asked because I took photos of the contents - in it's ugly, melted state.
And don't forget, just because you got it on sale the first time, doesn't mean you can replace it for that price!
So, take pictures of your stash if you can't list it. You won't regret it.

SuziC 01-03-2011 02:10 PM

I am afraid to even consider what it all costs

Rachel 01-03-2011 02:14 PM

I think I would have just asked for the insurance person's email address and sent it myself and skipped telling DH. tee hee

Lori S 01-03-2011 02:29 PM

I have a rider on my home owners policy for my quilting stuff. My agent could not believe the value. He had to see it for himself ... when I pulled off a chunk of fabric and told him just the one piece was $10.00 then counted just one shelf .. he quickly stated ... "your right , you would not be covered if this was all lost". The rider costs mimimal but nice to now I would be able to "replace" my "investment".

clair 01-03-2011 02:36 PM

Boy ,! girl you've got guts . I don't care if my quilting stuff is insured or not , I will never tell anyone of my insane passion for all things related to sewing. :D

knlsmith 01-03-2011 02:42 PM

crap.. I never thought about the insurance! MY hubby goes with me all the time, so he knows what I have... not sure he realizes how 100 here and $50 there adds up, but he was witness to most of my purchases.

I came in through customs in October and the agent asked how I could possibly have over $600 in fabric for personal use... Well, at nearly $30/metre the stuff added up quickly... stupid exchange rates...

Cheers, K

The whole thread has me thinking that I probably need to total the value of all of my craft supplies (quilting, scrapbooking, stamping and cross stitch) and quietly add a rider to our policy. I don't even want to think about what I have invested in this right now - and I certainly don't want to fess up to DH.

Sounds like a good project for the next week or so as I need to clear off the futon in order to give it to a student (and get it out of my house).

Cheers, K

maryb119 01-03-2011 02:54 PM

I am suppose to inventory my fabrics and tell my insurance agent how much they are worth. Where do I start? With fabrics? What about thread and patterns and rulers and all the other stuff that I need? Then there are my machines and the Ott lite and the cabinet one machine is mounted in and the computer because it holds my embroidery designs. I'm not sure I want to know the total myself.

mimom 01-03-2011 02:56 PM

I dont feel so bad about how much I spend on fabric. My vacuum broke that I got for christmas when looking for the receipt I found my husbands receipts for his tools that he has bought this year totally (yes I totalled it) $3350.00, cant wait for him to bring up fabric again.

EskapetheNorm 01-03-2011 02:57 PM

What a timely reminder. I should photograph the new computer as well for insurance purposes.
