I just went back and read several pages of replies to this thread. This is the best conversation ever!!!!!

craftymatt2 01-04-2011 06:22 PM

I replied earlier, but then i went to the basement to see if i should reconsider the amount, I don't know where to begin. There is just too much down here. Fabric is coming out of places that i forgot about, I must have been in a hurry to hide.

JUNEC 01-04-2011 06:24 PM

That was toooooooooooo funny. Thank you am having one of those days - a good chuckle was needed.

All I can think of is my walk in clothes closet, that can't be walked into, because of all the fabric I am hiding from DH.

Daisygirl 01-04-2011 06:28 PM

When it comes to anything having to do with my quilting, my husband and I have the same policy ad the military..... Don't ask, don't tell. It sorus out well this way (so far)

Jeananne 01-04-2011 06:30 PM

you can take fabric and sewing supplies and stuff off of your taxes? How? Please share!

Ramona Byrd 01-04-2011 06:31 PM

I remember when my DH used to complain about the cost of fabric when I wanted to make a dress or blouse or pants. Finally instead of arguing I took him to the best store in town (where he bought me BD and Christmas presents) and made him look at the sales tags on some of the clothing there. I then led the shell shocked man out to the car and drove him home.
This was good for a couple of years.

Another way to get around it is to put a dress, shoes, fabric, into the closet and exclaim in wonder when he questions it "Why, no dear, it's not new. It's been in the closet for so long I've forgotten about it almost." Truthfully, it may have been put away yesterday, but without mentioning how long "so long" was you're not telling a lie.

penski 01-04-2011 06:34 PM

my hubby never goes in to my sewing room nor does he know the value of material so i guess i would be in the samr spot you are in ------> do i tell or not ???

Emjay 01-04-2011 06:53 PM

Omigawd! I never thought of that! I'm sure what I have is worth at least $3,000 plus all the machines, serger, etc.
Hmmm - will have to talk with the agent. Up goes the premium.

DonnaB 01-04-2011 06:55 PM

I think I would just mumble a nominal figure and cross my fingers that I never really need to know how much stash $$ amount I have.

PatriciaAnn 01-04-2011 06:55 PM

Do you have a pattern of your turtle that is on the board and if so do you let anyone copy it thanks

j-mae 01-04-2011 06:57 PM

This is not unusual to me. A yr ago July I had a house fire, it started from the outside right at the area where the closet is that all my life time stash of fabric was stored. Yes, ALL MY FABRIC. :-(
When the restoration people came and I was washing all of the fabric with the chemicals they gave me, used to get out the smoke smell, they looked at me and asked me just how much fabric did I have there? I told them all I had been collecting my entire life. Many of the pcs were from my Grandmother!
When the insurance adjuster asked me how much it would cost to replace it all, and I said at least $3,000. he said "NO WAY"! Well, I asked him to set up an appointment with me so we could meet at JoAnn's. I took samples of each pc of fabric, recorded the yardage, and while at JoAnn's I found the equlivent pc of fabric and yardage. Took off 20%, as I don't buy at full price. He added up close to $6,000 worth of fabric at todays prices. Well, now that might open your eyes up a bit more as to what you actually have there...

Emjay 01-04-2011 07:04 PM

How do you manage to take a deduction for the fabric, etc?

So my husband and I are currently getting quotes on home insurance. While on the phone with the agent, I learned our previous policy, which DH got without me really paying attention to the itemizations, had my all of my quilting fabric listed as approx. $100 value. DH turned to me and said, "Well this policy is about 5 years old, and I know you've bought more since then. What would you say it's at now, $200? $250?" I just looked at him blankly while my mind raced...tell him the TRUTH? Egads!?!?! I mean, I am normally all for 100% honesty in a relationship, but this is surely an exception to that rule?

It pained me, it really did, but since this is for insurance purposes and I know it will just come back to somehow bite me in the butt if I don't tell the honest amount (i.e. flood in basement where fabric is, fire, etc...) I told him "try closer to $2,000-$3,000 and that's being conservative." He and the agent (male/non-quilter obviously) were speechless. Now I have to send him pictures and any receipts I may still have to prove it, LOL.

Just thought I'd share that funny story with you all....so how much would your sig. other say your stash is worth? What's the "real" $ amount? :)

Tanesha

I never thought about it but guess I should! We always think about the electronics or the books but I didn't think about fabric! Mmmm...

Glenda m 01-04-2011 07:30 PM

After reading this thread, I went to talk to my agent. He said that every thing was covered. Computers, sewing machines, fabric, etc. He did suggest takiing photos of everything and putting in a safe place to help if anything did happen. He said I could even video everything, easier, but I told him then I would have to clean the sewing room.. LOL Anyway, we are covered up to $70,000! That's just appliances, other things mentioned and personal items. I feel a little better now.

did you husband need to use his medical insurance after he found out how much fabric???

GrammaO 01-04-2011 07:53 PM

This is true of any hobby. When my girls were growing up they were very involved in horse showing. Someone broke into our tack room and stole two saddles, bridles, misc. tack. Thank God we had 'replacement cost' insurance and not 'actual cash value'. I showed pictures to the agent, went through the tack catalogs, he added up the price of stuff that looked like what we had and settled up. My now ex-husband knew showing was not cheap but he about had a coronary over the settlement and was actually upset that I spent the money to buy more tack. Having had that experience, I never even thought about the cost of my machine, my serger, the tools and notions, pattern books, and the stash. Duh! Thanks for a really good reminder. Even if we are adequately covered, pictures are important when we start itemizing and replacing. Good thread!

Rose_P 01-04-2011 07:54 PM

Many years ago when my husband happened to ask what I spent on something I answered ''Less than a round of golf.'' He didn't ask that question again. He grumbled more recently about the price of a (wonderful) used serger I bought at a garage sale, until I told him what it would cost new, which incidentally, was probably about what his golf club membership costs - every single month. And I paid only a fraction of that. And then I bought several sets of 4 spools each of the thread for it, along with several other things, and of course fabric... The less said about spending on a day-to-day basis the better, and as someone else pointed out, it's really no big deal as long as you're not going into debt for it.

I really appreciate this reminder about insurance. There are quite a number of things that have gone up a lot in price in recent years and might need another look for itemization. I don't have an especially big fabric stash and only (!) 3 sewing machines, but I'm a dabbler and have stashes for several other hobbies, too. Having to account for it all might be the incentive I need to cull the things I haven't used in several years. I used to do quite a bit of counted cross-stitch, but haven't crossed one of those stitches since the ring pillow for my son's wedding - 14 years ago!

quiltjoey 01-04-2011 08:06 PM

This has been a great thread! I have never really thought about insurance on my sewing stash, equipment, tools, patterns, thread, etc. I had told my DH that if anything ever happened to me to let my sewing buddies into my room to pick what they wanted before he would decide to throw everything away! I have maybe one DGD that might want all my "stuff" but she lives in Ca and I live in SC and rarely see her. No one else in the family including a daughter or DSIL's would want anything. I have 4 sewing machines, 2 sergers, a go cutter with many dies, EQuilt 7, Embroidery programs and patterns, and the list goes on. I usually keep my receipts and I do want to take an inventory now.

smiles 01-04-2011 08:06 PM

Got caught eh! My DH knows the cost of fabric & knows how much I have but I think he still would be shocked at the total amount.

biscuitqueen 01-04-2011 08:37 PM

My mom has insurance on her quilts, they are all apraised.

yourstrulyquilts 01-04-2011 08:40 PM

I would hate to have to tell my DH the truth. It is at least 10,000 dollars. And the sad part is, it's only worth that until you walk out the store with it. Talk about depreciation!

#1piecemaker 01-04-2011 08:45 PM

My insurance agent has never asked me to put a value on individual things. If he did, I'll have to shoot him! We just took out a lump some amount on the contents. thanks goodness!

Rose_P 01-04-2011 09:38 PM

Yourstrulyquilts said: Talk about depreciation!

Ah, but unlike almost anything else that depreciates the minute it leave the store, the value of fabric is more than redeemed if you make a quilt, and there is - as several have pointed out - intrinsic value in the process of making it. If it's not for a profit making business or a valuable gift for someone, it represents your well earned recreation, after all. A couple of hours of sewing may be cheaper than going to a movie these days. We're not in the mall or online buying anything while we're sewing, either. Heck, we may even be saving money! For me it also has health benefits because when I'm sewing I'm not indulging in one of my other passions: baking sweet things we shouldn't eat.

nana2 01-04-2011 09:41 PM

Well, I spent the first 40years with DH buying campers, guns, fishing equipment, boats, pick-up trucks, tools, etc. and I never saw his paychecks or his checking account. I also packed up the campers, cooked in some very inconvient outdoor kitchens, heated water on camp fires and chased after two very active kids just to come home and unload and clean up. Sooooooo now only a very foolish DH would dare to even whisper a question about my sewing and/or quilting. After all I got a late start and I plan to have a little of "me time" before the end. Hold your head up and tell the insurance just to write down what you tell him!!!! LOL

madamekelly 01-04-2011 09:44 PM

Oh my! I have to call my insurance agent tomorrow.

jollyquilting 01-04-2011 09:47 PM

I haven't thought about the fabric. We are thinking of re evaluating our insurance too. Maybe I should think about it too. Boggles me mind. LOL Machines are enough to think about it. Wow!!

Dee 01-04-2011 09:53 PM

We just uped our insurance, as the sewing room is worth a lot. Machines, notions and fabric-other crafts. I decided to go a bit more as remember the depreciation factor. When we robbed years ago, everything was depreciated. Made one heart sick. So think of your sewing room/studio.

wilmak 01-04-2011 10:36 PM

My hubby found my secret stash a couple of years ago. Believe it or not, all he said was that maybe we should rent a climate controlled storage place. I have been blessed with a very understanding husband. In fact, we have been married 47 yrs today. Do you think we can attribute that to the sewing machines, fabric , books, and gadgets? He has even bought me some of the gadgets and helped me pick out fabric. I think I will keep him around for a while.

quiltgrammyt2 01-05-2011 03:13 AM

My Hubby said for every tote of fabric I get he was gonna get a guitar,no problem,he really does not know how much fabric I can fit into a tote and that the totes are now bigger :D
Oh well he really doesn't care as long as we don't go in debt for our hobbies.
But I have not thought about insureing those 8 totes +
Something to think about!!!! :D

Hubby does not have any idea really what i have - but he does know that whenever i order from overseas it is costing me R1000 a shot. All my debits on the credit card goes to his phone, so i cannot hide, even if is buying milk, bread etc from the local spar to having facials, to whatever. I THINK HE HAS GIVEN UP ON ME as it does make me very happy. :P

ginnie6 01-05-2011 05:21 AM

lol! my niece just posted on FB the other day that she had 48 pairs of shoes in her new closet.....I'm sitting here wondering HOW do you wear that many pairs? I might have 10 pairs....might. I'm one to get a pair of shoes and wear them till they fall apart!. And while i don't have much of a stash I'm not sure I'd tell him and exact amount. Course with what he spends on cigarettes he couldn't say anything!

Izaquilter 01-05-2011 06:42 AM

You can claim fabric on taxes? Sh** I've been missing out for the last 20+ yrs! LOL I too went thru my fabrics when they were just in the stackable milk crates. Some of it was $3.96 a yd from Wal Mart, some $8 from quilt shops. So I sorted them into piles & added it up & I (we) too were surprised in how much $$$$$ is involved in just fabric alone! Not to mention my machinesssssssss, my supplies, notions, threads.........It's a forgiving hobby tho! He forgives if I hobby! I am saving my receipts starting the first of the year just to see how much I do spend on quilting. Just for MY curosity. DH doesn't mind like a lot of others on here, as long as I don't let the bills go & go into debt he doesn't mind. It keeps me out of his hair, what's left to it!

Lucy90 01-05-2011 07:15 AM

Never thought of how much fabric, sewing machines and if a person has a long arm should be included on insurance. I have a high amount on contents insurance but don't know if a person has to prove price. If something did happen where there was a fire it would be hard to prove. Maybe the cost of expensive quilting items should be put in a safe place with other documents.

sandpat 01-05-2011 07:19 AM

When I talked to my insurance guy, he said that if it is "personal hobby", even my expensive sewing machines were no problem under Homeowners...BUT...if I SELL anything..I need to insure it as "commercial use". You all might want to be careful about that part. For some reason, they have a hard time believing how many of us make LOTS of quilts, then give them away.

ajohn52 01-05-2011 07:50 AM

I'm with Mrspete, nice to be single in this regard. I have no one to answer to but me. Luv it!!

vickig626 01-05-2011 09:18 AM

that's good information. thanks! My DH helped me re-organize by buying additional 6 ft shelves to store my fabric in one place. I now have 9 shelves of "filled" fabric. He also commented on the cost sitting there. He's more aware of fabric costs so, after reading this, maybe we should increase our house insurance too.

vickig626 01-05-2011 09:21 AM

I'm also blessed with an understanding hubby. I recently upgraded my serger and he simply said...."you needed it". It's a BabyLock Enlighten and absolutely love it !! Although it was $1700 with my trade-in, it's more than worth it.... We've been married 26 years and counting.
