question about string or scrappy quilts in general?

I used anything in mine, did try not to repeat the same fabric in the block. I did start each center strip in a 2 inch navy blue because I like the center one the same but did anything for the rest. The next one I want to do in red, white and blue and will use every shade and print in those 3 colors.

I have made them from jelly roll swaps in which all kinds of fabric came to me. I just "sort of" put groups together that worked. It turned out great scrappy quilt. If you look at old quilts some have the oddest combinations together but they seem to work. That is what scrappy means.

I love making scrappys and for the one below it was a "planned scrappy" in that all the blocks had blue as the centre strip and I worked out to white on one side and black on the other. Other than that it was anything goes.

Some wrote that they used paper as foundation. I did the first time and it was a pain!!! I know use muslin. What do you use in the foundation? I love string quilts and want my next one to be black and white.

For the very first string quilt I made, I'd decided to use all of the "yucky" fabrics in my stash. I had a lot of those because I was addicted to buying scrap bags (still am, 30 years later). That quilt remains the prettiest string quilt I've ever made. It was such a success that I decided a string quilt made from a definite color scheme using fabrics I actually like would be that much better. It wasn't. Here's a photo of the first one - apologies for not being able to resize this one. If you look at the individual fabrics, they are really horrible but somehow it all works together.

Thanks for the help. I think I was just a little hesitant to get started. I found a great scrappy QAYG pattern at Sew Many Quilts - Too Little Time: February 2009 that I want to try. All the quilts are beautiful and hopefully I can turn out something half as nice.

When doing scrappy I think of the person who is going to receive it :male, female or child. I split my scraps between these three catagories when I am making scrappy quilts. There is no other rhyme or reason, I have found this works best for me. Good luck and have fun wit it too.
