maybe it is just me but I would not put pastels and florals in a quilt for a man. I would try to use up my darker fabrics along with sports, professions, etc. I know my husband would not want a quilt with "girlie" colors.

Thanks for all of your opinions. I am a big fan of Bonnie Hunter and I think she uses everything but the kitchen sink!
I guess if I follow her lead and have a quilt with lots of small pieces...a little bit of "girly" colors won't hurt. Just random scraps here and there.
Lots of great info from all of you...Thanks again

I love scrappy quilting also, however, as a general rule, I make my quilts to be gifted only once I know the recipient to be. I like to build the quilt to fit the person it's for.
When I don't have a list of comfort quilts waiting to be made, that's when I get to make quilts I want to make just for fun! Then I tend towards, kaleidoscopes, 4PPs, and other things that let me play. Right now I am collecting ideas for playing with stripes and border prints!!!
If my To Do list is ever done, I am ready to play!!

I'm not well versed on scrappy quilts yet but will be someday after the kid's quilts are done. I have aquired a lot of scraps from everywhere. But I think that quilts like Peckish showed would be great for a man with pinks in it as I think they will be only seeing the design popping out to them, not the colors in them. Beautiful quilts Peckish. Some year I hope to be 1/4 good as you are.

When I make scrappy quilts, the focus tends to be more on the design and not the fabrics. So yes, I will use fabrics that some consider "girly", with pinkish tones and flowery prints. Example: my pineapple quilt. This has a couple of pink-toned fabrics, and most of them have flowery prints. However, the prints are small and the overall color of the quilt reads taupes.
Interestingly, my 20 year old son asked for this quilt when it was done. As you can see, it has a lot of pastel peachy-pinks. He said it is soothing.

I used to be concerned about the colors too, but found my husband seemed to be drawn to the design more than the colors. When I let my imagination run with the design, I choose a border that will fit and wallah, loved by all.
