no I'm using a round 18inch hoop with no stand

Did I miss the info about wheather you are using a hoop or some kind of frame.
I demonstrated a method on www.quilters.tv.com to put large yellow head pins along the edge of the quilt and wrap a rubber band around the edge of the hoop and hook to the pins and then put one of those little end pieces used on pierced earrings on the end of the pin to keep from sticking your fingers or hands. It works for the edges of the quilting.

Oh, that's clever.

I didn't read the part about tying of the thread at the end the first time I looked at the post. To tie off the thread I make a french knot like used in embroidery at the end of the last stitch. I also run the ind thru the batting before I cut the thread.
