Question: Can we used the 'Kingford' charcoal to store in the FW cases? Or do we use another type of charcoal?? This is a discussion that I am having with my generation-X child.

I won't go into details until there is an answer.

From my understanding, if it is the "Original" then it is okay. However, any of the other, especially the "Match Light" and others should not be used.

I think I would wrap in newsprint and then maybe a cotton bag. Or maybe just put it in a bowl to set in the case.

I would not use it as it may have additives to help it ignite. Instead, see if you can get some activated charcoal from a pet store. It is used in aquarium filters and is sold separately from the filters so it can be changed out.

Thanks for sharing. Like so many I miss information sometimes as it rolls around and I believe I have missed this information all together. Now it is a trip to the pet store for charcoal. I will give this a healthy try in the case. When I first purchased my machine I did not really notice the oily order, probably because I was just to excited. Now I am noticing it to be very strong with I open the case. So it is time to do something about it.

Just go to a pet store and ask for “activated charcoal.” It is used in aquarium filters and is in smaller pieces. However I will tell you that the awful smell inside some FW cases is due to a fungus living off the animal-based glue used to assemble the case. The smell will never go away completely because the fungus is still growing. Charcoal might help in keeping the funkiness at bay though.

forget the charcoal, replace the felt drip filter on the bottom of your machine. That is what is smelling up your case. I also set my open case out in the sunshine for 2 or 3 days, after that it was just the sweet featherweight smell when I opened the case.

It is the glue that was made from horse hooves at that time. It will always have that distinctive smell. There are some restorers that will take the case apart and remove the glue and reassemble. I put my case away and bought a new one for my FW. It's prettier and easier to carry.

Juliasb, I would have posted the question on the 'vintage board' but the wifi was so delayed for me that it ended on the 'main board'. Glad that it helps more quilters than I realized.
