    Default Question on tying

I'm going to tie my D9P. I've glue basted the sandwich and machine basted around the edges. My question is should I start in the center and work my way out or start on the edge? I'm going to use 6 strands of embroidery floss. How do you do a large quilt? Do you lay it flat on the floor and crawl around? I know I'll get some good advice here. Also should I tie on the borders? I don't do FMQ.

I just tied one yesterday. I started with the center row and worked out from there. I drape it over my cutting surface--if you have basted it, it shouldn't shift--keeping the part I'm working on on top. I don't worry about the whole thing being flat as I work (such as spreading it on the floor), just the section I'm working on. I do tie the borders if they are wide-if you would prefer to stitch them, you could use your walking foot for simple straight lines. Good luck!

I also baste mine with the spray glue and then start at the center and work my way out. I use a TV tray. All I need is something to support the quilt and I can get my hand under it. I have also used my quilting frame - it is a hoop - but it was more trouble and then just used the TV tray.

Very funny replies here. Thanks, Ladies, for the laughs. I put my quilts on the cutting table so i can center it, (have used a tiny end table, a kitchen table, the floor, but always start in the center. Basting around the edges is helpful, but It always shifts (must be a quilt's rule to prevent us from getting it right). At least this way if you notice any wrinkles, folds, or wonkiness you can work them toward the edges with your hands and trim the leftovers to keep it all square before you bind. i've had to take out edge basting here and there to get the wrinkles out, though the baste makes it less and saves time. Happy tying!
