I started machine piecing and quilting in late January. I would ike to have something to do in the evening or while traveling. Knitting puts me to sleep, crocheting makes my hand cramp.

So, here's the thing. I know NOTHING about hand quilting! Dont' know what tools I need or even how to start. Can someone help me out here?

    Thanks!

Sam -- you will love hand quilting!! To get started, you need a needle, thread and small scissors. I like to use YLI hand quilting thread. It's coated and doesn't snarl and tangle as badly as regular cotton thread. Experiment with different size and types of needles. I also use a thimble. Lots of people use a hoop (I don't). Simple, huh?  There are a lot of really good utube videos out there for methods. But most of all, have fun!

Hi there, You need to baste your quilt or Wall hanging first to hold it in place and make sure you donīt have any wrinkles in the back. Start in the middle and work outwards. It takes time but it is important. Have a look through some books for designs or just quilt in the ditch, i.e., through the seam lines. This is to make sure your batting doesnīt move when you wash it.
Read up on a few books first, its easy and you will love it.

    Hope that helps. Elle

I posted a link the other day. I think I named it "Great Hand Quilting Tutorial". Enter it into Search. It is a great tutorial and got me started on my first hand quilted quilt last week. I am doing a "Quilt as You Go" and I am loving it. My index finger and middle finger on my left hand have about a thousand pokes on them LOL! I finally found a thimble that I like for the left hand. I need to be able to feel the needle poke through the fabric or my stitches are HUGE. Best wishes.
