Quilt battings
Good Morning Everyone,
I am making a baby quilt. I have previously been using warm and natural cotton batting. I do find that using this batting when I have the quilt quilted with an overall pattern, they end up being a little stiff. I would like this quilt to be very soft. What would any of you suggest for a good batting? Thanks for any suggestions.

How about a layer of flannel(lette), I would wash the flannel first. The quilt would be warm and cuddly - also polar fleece (maybe you just call it fleece here in USA), I have used that, the fleece; as the backing for baby quilts and used no batting. It has made a really nice baby quilt.

a nice lofty poly make for soft/cuddly/durable baby quilts- polyester batts launder well, last a long time- also hobbs 80/20 or wool batting makes for wonderful lofty soft cuddly quilts...they all wash up nicely, quilt beautifully and create nice soft, fluffy quilts. i only use w&n for wall hangings or totes; other projects- it is my all time least favorite batt for quilts. fleece & minkie make wonderful quilt backs too.

For really great drape , I like Cream Rose or Cream white. Its the scrim in warm and natural that gives it the "stiffness"... but I find a scrim really does help the batting from "bunching" in heavy use/laundry.

I like Mountain Mist Blue Ribbon 100% cotton batting best for baby quilts. It is quite thin, can be quilted closely, and the quilt comes out of the washer/dryer very soft and flexible. It is a traditional batting; many antique quilts were made with it. It needs to be quilted no further than 2" apart. It is not needlepunched.
I think that Quilter's Dream Select would be very similar, and probably also Mountain Mist Cream Rose or White. These are also thin cotton battings, but have been needlepunched for additional stability so quilting lines do not need to be as close together.
One of the reasons Warm and Natural is stiffer is because it has been needlepunched through scrim. The other battings I mentioned have no scrim.
