Just to play devil's advocate here for a moment -
I can't sing on perfect pitch - but I can tell if someone else has missed the note! or if the other person can perform well.
So, too - like on a garment- many can tell if it 'isn't quite right' - even if they aren't able to do it 'right' themselves.
I think even those that don't make quilts - can tell if it's done well or not.
As far as comments of the sort 'only a quilt sewn by hand, etc. can be a real quilt; - maybe in that person's world, that is what a 'real' quilt is. I can understand and empathize with being annoyed - but ignorance on the other person's part is really no excuse for snottiness/snarkiness in return - Sometimes all one can do is shrug one's shoulders and walk away - plus it makes for a something to talk about later!
There are those that think one should cook only with each ingredient easily identifiable - and avoid using mixes, food processors, etc. For all I know they still cook over a campfire in earthenware containers.
There are some people that are still at that point in their view of what a quilt is and how it should be made!
One can try to educate/enlighten others - but it only works if they are willing to learn!

It is hard to be polite in the face of astounding ingorance. You appear to have done an amazing job. Good for you. I would probably just have said that quilting is folk art and I am folk. BTW, my great great grandmother, who made quilts for soldiers in the civil war, did a great deal of her vast and extraordinary work on a machine. Her husband, I was told, bought her (in Boston) the first sewing machine brought to Illinois.
