Default Quilt of Valor in progress

On Veteran's Day I got out the box of Quilts of Valor fabrics and found stings so I made 5' scrappy squares while thinking about my WWII veterans, my father and father-in-law among them. Now I need to complete the 12.5 block.
I think they should be squares in a square but I do not have a design. I tried adding the second square but still so small that when I added a border it was way too big.

I would look at the Moda Bake Shop site for designs using charm squares. Sorry, I do not use many 5” squares, so have no other recommendations.

Your blocks are so nice. Love Red, White and blue quilts. Are you looking for something to be alternating in between your blocks?

Thanks for replying. The Quilt of Valor blocks are supposed to be 12 1/2 inches. I am looking for a way to maybe make this a square in a square and then add something to expand it outwards. The only reason is is a 5" square is that is what just happened when I started sewing the strips together.

You can add triangles to each side of the block (to make it square in a square). If blocks are still not large enough, add rectangles (width needed or multiples to get width desired, like a log cabin) to each side. Hope this is clear. If not, maybe someone could draw this out to illustrate.

I love to make QOV as I am the mom of a Marine (1996-2005). Two of my QOVs were given to veteran's this year on 11/11.

Really cute blocks !! What will these 4 patches finish out at just as they are?

Our guild does many QoVs - to the best of my knowledge there is not requirement for the blocks to be a particular size - just that the overall size must no smaller than 55” x 65” and no larger than 72” x 90".

I would do as ILoveToQuilt suggested. Add your triangles and once you have your square in a square, then you could add a border on it to bring it up to the size you want it to be. One other option is to do something like this....

Our QOV group doesn't have a limit on block size, just we try to keep the finished size no smaller than 60 x 80.
